Genuine Beginner mistakes?

U remember some mistakes/misconceptions u had while u were newbies? I will list some of mine..and for the content, believe it or not, they are true:

1)I used to think that logistics is the MOST useless skill in the game(!). My logic was that: the main point of this game is to win battles. And logistics contribute nothing to that; that its jsut a show for pple who want to have the choice to move more.

2) I had not read the manual in the beginning so didnt have the clue what certain spells were for. I just applied them according to the name, ie. what it sounds like for. So I had applied shield before, while challenging archers

3)I used to think that map editor's only for cheaters. So I had never opened it. I learnt criss cross simply by playing it. So in a toh game I remember I once built lookout tower on a fixed map!

4)I once thought that lvl4 army was enuf, that the upper lvl creatures werent 'value for money', noting how much the dwellings were.

One thing I still do which I like is never looking at a map but to just play it because I love surprises.
Most of the time players will pick a map the know the most.
I do ask what I should know about the map but briefly.
I think I do ok for playing blind maps & the maps I play on my rankings are the only ones I know

hehe when i was a newbie played "the hero" on almost every map

And my battle skills was amazing: all units forward! "i wanna kill those bastards as soon as i can"....and then that i moved my top lvl units so the opponents units just could reach them didnt bother me much...

Favourite spells: blind&implo. Except for blind i only used dmg spells.

Capitol day1 week2.

I had Rashka as favourite hero since he had efreets as specials and i thought that those efreets really rocked.

Favourite 2.nd skills was luck&offense, i never took log or earth magic or something since i thought magic was for sissys that didnt know how to fight. And who could use more movement when u could get luck bonus in battle...

I was always playing dungeon since i reckoned that those scorpicores really rocked. And if game lasted 2months i could buy drags...

I never visited university since i thought spending money on a 2.nd skill was bull.

Well these are all i can come up with now, maybe more later

/Stefan

Well, I didn't think logistics was the WORST skill....
I would take it over navigation most times

I think my worst mistake was avoiding magic skills like the plague.  Then I kept trying to figure out where my opponents were getting their "mass" spells from!

When I went to multiplayer, I only bought 2 extra heroes (they were the only ones that had an army) and sent them out to scout.  Of course I let them keep their army so I had 3 pathetic armies instead of 1 army that could actually do something.  Good for me, my first opponent took a few minutes to give me a few tips

go slow

I mastered the art of taking a really long time to complete an L or XL single player map so the 2 or 3 ramparts with treasury would give a weekly income of about 100000 gold pieces. Once i had about 400k i didnt need to focus on making any more gold, just kept going up. The other advantage of taking a really long time is that diplomacy gets better. Keep waiting till that stack of crusaders gets to 4000 then pick them up. Gave u a chance to beat the Legion bug when an ai comes at u with 3000 anchients.

Going back even earlier, the first time i did the campaigns i had no idea what the heroes skills were and just chose anything i got given lol. Sometimes my heroes would get mass spells and sometimes didnt, wierd eh?

as an online newbie i liked necro the most in H3 but thought necromancy spec heroes were ordinary, liked tamika more cuz the knights were faster and she learnt great skills

Newbie mistakes that I still do on occasions:

- I link my troops to the front for a big fight against a neutral group of monsters, I`m almost there, one last swapping of troops from my carrying hero to the hero with whom I wish to attack... There, swapping is done, I just have to click on the group of monsters to initiate the fight.  Here comes the battlefield...  Wait a minute !  Where are my troops?  Oops, I sent the wrong hero....

- This is a mistake I did less than 5 times but I did it again recently against Oo_TEL_oO:  ``Darn I think I`m behind in the game.  Lucky smelly TEL has 2 necro castles and I have castle and stronghold.  I better build my magic guild fast.  Look what we got in level 4.... Great! Town Portal and Meteor Shower !   Quick let my troops on a mine to surrender my main hero to a nearby monster group and get those good spells.  All I`ll have to do then is cast town portal and return to my stronghold nearby the area where I left my troops.  Hmmmm  Why can`t I cast town portal?  Ooops I don`t even have basic wisdom!``

- BTW if you ever cast town portal to a castle where you have built the magic guild level 5...  Click on the magic guild once you are in that castle because if you cast town portal to return where you were without clicking on the magic tower first, the level 5 spells will simply not be in your book !   That cost me a 2x2 game against Salamandre and Jb239...  You can`t figure a tougher way to learn something about this game.

- The mistake I did the most often and it`s almost always costly: If you think of using any of the great might heroes in the game, buy a book before leaving town....

- Frank

worlds quickest way to dispose of army

i notice that very late at night i regress in ability and even break into new realms of stupidity lol. here is one recent one...
go into an area to attack a few things that were important, then give troops to a scout, bounce off a neutral troop and pick up spells including tp from a lvl 5 mage build in a tower town. then chain army back to a town via the scouts and pick up troops again with main hero using tp. Sounds good so far, except that i bounced the scout of the neutral, and wondered where my hero had gone when wanting to rehire. Oh there it is, tazar with 1 dragonfly for army and no other troops to be seen lol. Fortunately as my opponent had done a dumb thing earlier in game and we had reloaded, it gave him the chance to return the favour

A mistakre I make on numerous numerous occasions...

Attacking something like horde of crusaders, thunderbirds ect..
I have exp earth and often have found a slow scroll... then go to cast.. NOOOOOO Hack didn't buy a spell book. This often results in losing a major portion of army.

hmmm some other mistakes..

I know one game were maybe not a newbie mistake but certainly ended my game fast. I need x crystal and x gold for drags on day 7..

hmmm no problem I trade at the market place. So I build market trade my resources ready to run with 3 drags next day.. low and behold the market stole my building priviledges!!!! So now not only do I not have dragons. but I don't have a castle either..

Also forgetting to sizes of certain things, ie topia, conservatory.. Imp Cache. (which is the absolute worst) when 2 or 3 level 6's find 300 imps lol.

how about forgetting to buy back hero with that quest artifact.. I always find that alot of fun.

THats all for now

Well I'm a newbie. And I too have lost many scouts, because I forget to click on my main hero before attacking the monsters and get stuck with 1 centaur against lots of pit lords. They should make another update for Heroes 3 again so you have to click on a hero before you can move after you exchange creatures, spells, and artifacts between heroes.

I've already learned to buy a spell book when playing with might heroes.

well I thought of another one after having just did it

After deciding to undertake a relatively difficult battle, I decided I'd spend the day in town to refuel mana.

TO my surprise next day rolls around and my spell points have refueled to 1 !!!!

Well guess what.. I didn't have a guild in that town.

Still Do It!

I was just playing Daeyan's Ford and got Erdmaddon(sp?) up to L11 and had Expert Earth already and realized I had no Wisdom and no more slots... What was I thinking. He was useless and I had to develop my 2nd hero. Oh, and I've done the wrong hero thing too. Just met my heroes(3 of them) to exchange all the artifacts and distribute them better. I attacked and couldn't understand why I got my ass kicked. Well I gave all my artifacts to the guy with one creature!

I still make silly mistakes.  Like clicking NEXT to those units instead of attacking them.  Not that I'm a vet now, still quite newbish.  I hope you get better as you go on, cause I sure haven't yet.

Thought I was the only one!

I feel better knowing I am not the only one that forgets to buy a spell book. I have played a whole map without buying my main hero a spell book. Duh!

Another thing I still do is play it safe. I am a big chicken and won't venture far from my castle without feeling I am prepared for anything. Only problem is by the time I am confident that I can kick some butt my opponents are usually a lot stronger than I am sometimes. I am trying to make myself be more adventurous afterall I can restart if I get whipped.
