Megavideo had a stoopid limit and megaupload sucked anyway.
Nothing of value was lost.

Lets see:
-The entire XDA devs resource archive was lost(perhaps 2-3% will be reuploaded?)
-Privat backup for about 3% of the internetts population was lost
-This also puts the safety of Dropbox and Mediafire at risk, which will hamper the migration to the cloud and communties hosting.

That being said, I think that pretty much anyone who uses the Internet thinks that SOPA is a bad idea, so there's pretty much no way this bill is going to pass.

I've no knowledge on how the American law works. In Turkey, it's like a monarchy. If the Prime Minister doesn't want a thing, it doesn't happen. If he wants, it happens.
So Obama said, he would reject it. But it can be accepted and put to action although the President rejects it?
And why does a US law affect all the world? They can't put bans on non-US websites, games, etc., right?

Except the English speaking world (the likes of UK) will bend over backwards for the us.

The president has the ability to veto any bill that has passed both houses of Congress (House and Senate), thereby preventing it from becoming law. However Congress can override a presidential veto with (totally stretching my memory here) a 2/3 vote. I think there's a time limit also that the president has (maybe a week or ten days or something like that) to sign a bill into law, after which it becomes law without his signature.
Final point to note is that the president only has authority over federal law. State laws are passed without presidential consideration, obviously, but most governors, who sign into law state bills, have veto power as well.

No, but what company - most of which are based in the US - in its right mind is going to abandon the US market?

Quote: And why does a US law affect all the world? They can't put bans on non-US websites, games, etc., right?
Affected:
-Paypal, etc...
-.com domains, possibly .net and .edu and .org
-Any interaction with google, yahoo, bing or any US based search engines and all companies with a branch in USA
-Any international bank with a office in USA, and all US banks that are international
So basically the problem is not that it directly kills the sites, it kills it indirectly.
Merly by removing it from googles index it is effectivly killed. And beyond that image that it can't even get add revenue, and all donation forms are blocked off except normal banking. All donations from any bank with a US office is also a problem.
So basically it allows you to directly kill a site, without enabling it to reply and get the case solved before a week has passed.
What it will turn the procedure into:
1. Complaint letter is sent to various organisations(google, paypal, banks, US controlled DNS)
2. Site loses all revenue and links, and the reply to the takedown are not forced to be heed(most likely will never be heed)
3. And that leaves you with going to court. That has 2 problems:
*Submitting yourself to US juridstriction
*You have to open the court case, as the attacker, and prove that you are not guilty, a process that takes anything from several months to several years
Btw: Lets not forget ACTA folks.....

SOPA has apparently changed it's name to CISPA.
So, when is it time to start using guns instead of site blackouts to discourage these idiots?

I have relatives, who work in USA and hope these subjects to not be forgotten,so that my relatives enjoy at least a part of my freedom as non-american.
