Your worst tech purchases

I guess that would be a nice thread to warn people about crap out there since we are in a forum about technology (in an aspect)

Spill your anger about your own horrible tech purchases HC!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'll be the first one going at it.

My first horrible one was Toshiba Satellite A200-1BP Laptop.

It came with a broken DVD-Rom and got an immediate replace. I should have understood how it sucked then. But no, everyone loves Toshiba so I trusted it.

In 2 years time, the DVD-Rom got broken and was replaced 7 times. After its guarantee ended, it also got broken 4 more times and I paid for its repairment. Then at the end of its 3rd year the graphics card crushed and needed to be replaced for $250. And so I threw it away.

My second horrible purchase, which led me to open this thread with frustration to warn people, as it recieved many nice reviews is Logitech Gaming Keyboard G105.

I was decieved by n-key roll over and backlight. I've bought it 2 days ago. It was working nicely.

Then, today, its grey buttons, (a,s,d,w, left, right,up and down) and its specific to this product buttons (backlight, windows disabler, m buttons and g buttons) stopped working. Worse, the direction buttons are pressed by a spectre, meaning contantly they are input. I choose a file, it then chooses the one left to/right to/ up to/ down to it randomly. So you cannot even enter your windows password or write something.

So now, I'm on my way to return it.

There was this time when my mate was buying condoms and the chick at the counter asked "which ones". He told her it doesn't matter and she gave him the XXL pack. Which he noticed upon leaving the store.

That feeling when you're supposed to return back inside and tell her "excuse me, uh, I need smaller ones".

Then again, condoms probably don't count as technology so forget I said anything.

One thing to consider is that buying a single sample of one product does not guarantee a problem with all samples of said product despite the similar cicumstances of production.
It's actually fairly obvious, because such broken products would not be able to sell well at all. Since that's not the case there are clearly satisfied users out there. Further more we're talking about sufficient numbers in this group of users to validate that most circumstances like these are matters of either bad luck or isolated cases of faults in production. Both issues would not validate a generalisation regarding the entire amount of samples of the product in question. Rather somewhat isolated local areas of which tangents of this product line goes through.
Yet somehow arguments like those are analogous to arguments of final points of evolutions. Invalid because the model is of a system in everchanging flux and that is important to note. An example is only proper and shows the naive idea of a free market currently active is nothing but an illusion. The example I have decided to go for is called planned aging in products. It all began a century ago. The companies became better and better at creating high quality merchandise. But much like the medicine industry, when you cure something in stead of treating it, you lose an income. The same happened for the people who made well made products which would last for an incredible amount of time. An often used example is the light bulb. You'll find light bulbs from companies which went out of production before our great grandparents were born. These bulbs still works properly. Compare that to your own light bulb you have to change monthly. But is this planned aging not of opposite effect? Would the companies with the best products not win? The thing is, which is why I said it was analogous to evolution, time matters and there's no so called final point in time. You can make anything work better than something else if you invest enough money behind for sufficient time. You can sell your milk and lose money on it to prize so low that no one can compete with you. When everyone else is out of business because you had by far the most money behind you, you decide the prize on milk. As such many items, even modern equipment, may be built with intended inherent faults, which makes the consumer need to change equipment earlier, meaning the companies will sell earlier as well. This is something a truely free marked should not allow, despite it not being very obvious, selling more products for more income is only a short term gain, when in reality you have not increased the amount of needed work. After all that's all what money is, a change of work, a way for society to function. Money have no value except for what we decide and I think money is not the optimal system for a society because it has created gradients of pollution and limited freedom. Now this in itself might not be bad, because it could be a trade off, no the real problem is that money is a gradient for more money, which is the definite proof of problem with this system. Why? Because work capability is still the same as before. For a marked which is truely free, where the everchanging flux, the no "final time" problem is solved you'll need many changes. Limitations must be removed, technology must be freely advanced and the entire system must recylce its components all the time. Only then I'd say bad luck. As it is now, I can only say I am sorry. I am sorry for your "friends" loss baklava. Because it was indeed a loss.
In total we can conclude that baklava's "friend", which of course is baklava him/herself, would have had his/her penis adapted to the XXL condoms had he/she not cowarded out of it.

Well, I'll see that soon, since, they game me a new one of the same product, saying refund or changin with another product is not possible :/ It's working now. Hope it remains like that cause it's really a good keyboard.

Which reminds me how stupid I am for having forgotten to mention that I have this product:

Yeah, Ipod Classic 6G.

It seems French government demanded that the sound output of the device to be reduced. And due to a European law, if a law about a product is valid in a EU country it must be valid throughout the Europe. So the EU ipod classic 6Gs have half of the volume the US ones have. HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO KNOW THAT? The volume is capped in the firmware of the device so it cannot be broken in anyway.

I hate listening to music loudly. The sound distorts and my ears ache. I have very sensitive ears and eyes, be sure I have no problem with them. I hear every frigging low voice. But it is impossible to listen to music with this device in the street even at the max volume. The noise of the street is much more dominant. You can't even understand if it's playing or not during songs' slow passages. And add to that my being a classical music fan, and you will get how frustrated I'm.

Now it's simply sitting there in the shelf. I just use it in the night when there is silence all over. There should be a warning on EU 6G ipod classics saying "has no volume". I have even signed petitions on the net, since everyone is complaining about it, but of course there hasn't been any outcome.

You can replace "single" with "few" if you want to. Also it requires some assumptions before one can make meaningful probability statements in this regard and without this assumptions one could even replace "single" or "few" with "any", but then the company would certainly be out of business long before then.
With these assumptions there's a limit before it simply gets absurd and well established conclusions can be drawn and an investigation would maybe be required.

Worst tech purchase goes to a microsoft controller, it was £1 cheaper than the rest so like a cheapskate i purchased it without hesitation. It was some (probably illegal) variant of the real thing. Every aspect of it was bad and it made no effort to cover it up.

Oh ye there is my samsung lcd 32" tv. For the last few months the screen had a red tint to it (looked like I was in the plane of oblivion 24/7) so it actually enhanced my gameplay. As we all know the worst thing an enemy can suffer is to be ignored, so in an act of hissy fit my tv is now green tinted. (it's primary colour. I set my screen to black and white, and it's still green) as always I'm going to wait it out and let it solve itself, 'til it pisses me off, at which point I will dissect it and feed its components to a lush forest fire.

Phones have abysmal sound quality. Any mp3 player tramples them in that matter. Guess you either don't care about that, or the exterior is too loud for you to notice (in that case try earbuds)

Well, that's how it's supposed to be but if I compare Iphone 3G's sound quality to Ipod 6G Classic's sound quality, iPhone just dominates. It's strange. iPod's basses start to blow on high volume.

Are you sure about that? I mean, sony ericsson have always used high quality sound in the W (Walkman) collection.
Earbuds are also high quality from Sony's side.
So, i'll repeat, -- Cell beats MP3 Player

As far as I know, the headphones can't re-produce the sound quality the output failed to transmit to them. They don't create what's not given to them, what the output gives to them is their ingredient.

my worst tech purchase? Hmm I can't seem to decide between headphones that broke like 5 minutes after I started using them and a cooling pad for laptop, which is too small and its blowing the wrong way...

EDIT.
Oh wait , there is still that 5.1 sound system I bought and for reasons I can't remember only two speakers work

Uh honestly, I haven't really made any bad tech purchases.

I read like over 9000 reviews of stuff before I buy it. The only thing I bought without thinking too much was my TV, but that one's worked fine fortunately.

Oh right I bought this light-pistol for my PS2 when I was like 12, played Time Crisis on it. Got boring way too quick. My 40 year old uncle played it 'til his fingers bled though... ^^

Only thing that comes to mind.

...

Argh now I feel like playing Time Crisis again.
