Templates with normal water/islands

I kinda like water maps with a few islands or lots of islands in single player. Unfortunately the default random map templates seem to be pretty bad for generating water. Anyone knows where to get a better one or how to make one, in theory?

Also good fixed maps with islands are welcome. I played Blackbeard's secret or something like that and it was very nice.

Well to create one islands map.

Its rather easy to create an island map. Without story its very easy. Throw in all necessary resource at least two castle for each player. Imagine 8 islands and one in the middle which you can reach with underground or monoliths.

Throw in a bunches of random stuff and you are half way.

To tell exactly what's need to be done from step by step instructions is a long book. Try the editor and fool around.

By the word "template" one usually thinks of a "random map template", which the game uses to generate random maps. If I was to create the map by myself, I would already know everything about it and I would have to wait 5 or so years before I can "discover" it Thanks for suggestions anyway.

I see. The suprise is also an factor. That makes it little harder I suppose. Not really a good advice.

Hmm, Try put on a blindfold and memorize all buttons.

Actually your advice was good afterall I'm trying to make a template myself which would have, as you stated, decent start locations and a bunch of islands. Shouldn't be impossibly hard as it's for single player anyway.

Edit: Turned out that the main problem was making map generator understand that one needs ships if one plays on islands map If there are no connections, then all islands are surrounded by unpassable terrain, which makes sense. However if you specify a bunch of connections between islands, the map generator doesn't get that the sea serves as connection between ANY two islands if both have shipayard and area for landing. So it generatos infinite amount of teleporters, which isn't very aesthetic.

So the solution seems to be to make a few dummy areas that all the starting areas are connected to, so that all starting areas get shipyards. In order to add twenty-something tiny treasure islands that I wanted to have, I didnt make any connections for them. Instead, if you add a mine on the tiny island, there is something like 70% chance that this mine frees up enough shore terrain for landing! So tiny islands with wood/ore mines function without the need of connections, as connections tend to produce teleporters even on island map. So if you put 20 tiny zones with treasure + 1 mine, you get roughly 14 accessible ones and the rest can't be accessed. However that is ok until you make the template for yourself or people who know what's going on.

Will test the template a bit and then probably "release" it. It isn't very good but does what it was supposed to do. Meant for 256x256, with 7 AIs.

Well the computer or "random generator" always tries to surround you castle with unpassable "walls". Even if you make serveral maps it looks the same with enough emounts of attempts with islands or lands. Its mostly rely on the same concept. Even if you make for yourself or for player red. The one map you made is always better. Even the 7 als concept is good rather than making the random factor. You rely on your mind and even if you make a good playing. It will kick ass as usual as its your own. Even me may be impressed. But the random objects the one button with "4 tress in a square" button is a good one to use when you are stuck in a map creating. Its always create random stuff.

I look forward for the release.

I'm not sure we are understanding eachother here. I want to have random map TEMPLATE so if I play the game, I will not know the map. The template allows generation of same kind of basic layout, which is exactly what I wanted to achieve. I believe you were talking about making one good "fixed map", that is the same each time you play it? I'm talking about making a .txt file, not .h3m file.

Islands for Islands

Islands for Islands template here

Settings:
XXL patch for 256x256 maps, map size L or XL there
No underground
Islands water
Player vs 4-8 AIs
If you see extensive amount of teleporters (more than 3 per island) you may want to restart, this happens very rarely.

Single player difficulty: The template is actually rather easy compared to, lets say 8mm6XXL template. So you might want to end turns for a few weeks at the start of game or put AIs in one team.

I'm not 100% happy with it, since the starting areas are slightly too poor sometimes but it's close enough. The areas are based on 8mm6 template. I just took the area settings and changed the layout of zones to create large number of small islands. You shall be warned that some treasure islands are sometimes inaccessible but that is not a game breaker in my opinion.
Also water is littered with mermaids but I doubt this can be fixed in SoD.
