Need inspiration
Well hello fellow players. Especially pointed to "map-makers" and such. But every aspects of interest is welcome.
Who am I? I played Hereos 3 from the start when it arrived in the stores and windows 98 ruled the streets with brute force. Experienced or not I have lots of experience creating other maps for other games like Dawn of war, Starcraft, and the list goes on with even Hereos 4 and 5 included. But really thought why not create something more spectacular like an campaign with storyline from the best game of all in my collection. Before I just fooled around created some multiplayer maps for fun and had some spoils here and there. So I picked up my copy of Hereos 3 complete again and got myself reintroudced to the basic editor with Sod again and had to look for the win32 help application because of the limits beyond windows vista.
So I started a campaign for Heroes 3 with serious attempts on trying to exceed the limits of the editor and achieve something that follows a story with choices and consequences. Ex. If you miss one artifact = you may also miss other important clues later on.. etc. Or one type of troops dies and you must choose another path...etc.
To make up for all this also I will impliment parts two of my favourite maps at all time from Hereos 3 and also bring in the story from these maps to be as part of the real storyline.
To the real thingy now. What does people expect from a campaign? Do people like complicated maps or extremly hard maps? Myself really hated the 9999 azure dragon campaigns and extremly tough armageddon heroes. The Chronicles series had interesting story and some other good aspects. But ended up in the classic ways of "You have a castle, you build your army, you defeat the hero, you win end of story... Boring" I find it more pleasing with 1 hero and...one army to survive with through every map is more my way of creating things. But I dont create the "The easy map with a couple of enemies and one final boss and bah you beated it"
I have so far in my mind five maps. 4 Main maps for the story and one really small that has a side path for another hero. So total 5 maps to play. I maybe create a bonus map later on.

I wish you luck in your map creating, and can't w8 to play the result.
As for the difficulty - I never liked hard maps. The ones where you have to think outside the box are the best imo.

Then I will line this campaign with sort of above normal difficult. That means you could play it hard or you can play it wisely and survive without to much losses. Unlike other maps the story is merely focused on a couple of Crusaders that needs to survive until the end to unlock serveral other events to continue and so on.
And for the Longest Journey. I looks like an 9500 elementals matters. But the story looks good and the map is well designed. I do not think I can finish it in 9 weeks doh. I give it a try...

So far 4 maps completed out of 5 maps on this campaign. That means it will be released in about one or two months. I have given this alot of time. Currently I have some ligament injuries on my foot and has been away from work for about 2 weeks and still have another 2 weeks to heal completly. That means I had time to work on this. Free time is not a problem when you cannot walk out of your apartment.
So the biggest problem is balancing the maps. I tried different solutions but your own hero gets really strong later on the more maps you play. But I do not want to make extremly hard. I promised to not use the thousands of units facing your hero. But it's merely seems like an option soon.
The last map in the campaign has 8 different endings and is an XL map full of puzzles with pretty much everything 3do has to offer with some very interesting ways of playing it. Players need to be really smart to get especially one of the endings to use exact every possible solution to get to it.
This campaign feature almost all artifacts in use, No castles to gather units and mass armies to conquer your enemy hero in another castle, Secret battles with great rewards, Story text for 90% of all units and events also items in the game of course. Secondary skills is pre-set already to learn so no more gaining diplomacy or expert earth skill with mass slow or something. Choices and consequences featured to make this more painful when you rely on the tips given in game.
All heroes will have there own litte story and even the evil heroes will have a background text. No hero will use the orginal template with names provided by 3do. This is campaign with it's own unique story that step by step revealed for the player if it plays out right.
Hopefully I can manage to do some grammer revising on everything but I currently tries to do an complete version of the campaign without misstakes and it looks good from now. Using an XL on the last map takes some time to really stand out.

Out of curiosity, what two maps are this?
I'll try to play your campaign when it comes out, although I don't have as much time in the spring

Good! It will be Knee deep in the dead and Unholy Quest. Also underground part from Key to victory and Fort knox may be also found. Last XL map will have these maps partly involved as small milestones.
