After updating HD-MOD to the latest verison. ERA2 dosen't even start with HD-MOD. Without HD it works just fine.
Make sure you set the game in Compatibility Mode for XP 3 and then run it from the HD launcher

i installed everything as needed, and was able to play once or twice, now when i try to start after that I get the error
"failed to load or compile lua script. cannot open datascripts_core_.sys.lua"

I've just installed clean HoMM complete (GOG) and the latest ERA. I can't hear town music, is it bug or feature?

Oh, you misunderstood. Main sound is just fine, I can't hear exactly music in towns, beautiful Paul Romero's compositions are missing, when I open any town window in-game. Like they are disabled or something.
I've checked with clean install - OK. Interestingly, I've tried another clean install with older ERA version 2.46, it's working as well, so I guess I am facing ERA bug from 2.46-2.7.3? Has anyone noticed it?

Wow, after 10th reinstall on different PC, I've actually checked music volume in game... and looks like after ERA 2.46 it's turned to 0 by default. Very strange change for ERA may I say, I think it should be set to default value after mod installation, since I've never ever changed music settings Anyway, thanks for the solution that simple 
P.S: I've noticed ZVS in Credits. Funny thing, he was my programming teacher back in university, I didn't even know he is WoG author, LOL.

Tried only version 2.6.6 and, yes the music is defaulted to 0.
Even though it fully plays real full screen and all, the resolution + graphics are simply awful.
Plus, the AI is cheating like nuts. Even at Normal settings of difficulty, it gives itself enormous troops bonuses + shows up with enormous amounts of troops per unit in that main army of such A.I. opponent. That was a 1 on 1 tiny map game setup. I lost 2 tries out of 2.
Removed all that was Era II files from my Heroes 3 Complete folder and, restored my good ole' HD mod by reinstalling its latest beta version.
Beautiful music and ambient sounds of the game's map and, remains atrociously aggressive but, without all troops cheating effects. Won a game of it already.

Now, all 7 titles can be played on Windows 10 Home/Pro Editions. Thanks to the good ole' Gog.com people, all the series can be played on any decent multi-core PC.

I just noticed that it has many more false positives than HotA and the HD mod. I'm guessing that introducing ERM scripting throws up red flags when doing heuristic analysis.
