Yeah 2nd time through I'm using those flare flasher things instead of disabling shot with my pair of snipers in the group. The vision those flashers grant you is absolutely kick ass, especially when followed up with a surprise rocket I'm lovin' it. Disabling shot can be useful late game against sectopod, but meh, that's what Heavies are for.

IT'S OUT!
Enemies Within expansion that is. Oh, why, why is Steam so slow in Korea?
Yeah, I had to install steam since it's the only way to get Enemies Within legally here. I'm still a little shocked over that.

I've been working on losing zero countries on impossible but it seems I need to get the choices just right. The first terror mission needs to be located in a high panic continent and you need to rush the first alien base mission.

I don't think koreans are that good at anything that's not realtime.
But I approve of your method.
ARGH!
So close. My mission to take over the alien base was one day late. Literally. God damn snow it. snowing Russians. Whole of Europe is on 1 panic but russia flies at 4 and refuses to snowing drop. Yeah, was my first country to be satellited. I even have extra satellites to drop but having both Australia and Russia as two first countries to be satellited and both flying at 4 panic now.
Well, I quess that calls for a new game. In the mean time I might actually do some uni work...

Returned to this game and Classic Ironman just killed me twice already. First game I was doing just amazingly, but alas, my overconfidence was to be my fall... attacked the Alien Base too early. No retreat possible..
Second game, praying to the gods didn't help lol, Terror mission from hell. With Chryssalis killing everything and making more of them and and.. it was a massacre like I've never seen one! In the end I couldn't even control my units but only to watch, as they were running in panic all over the city, just to be greeted by another Chryssalis around the corner.
Pretty fun though! I remember the Terror missions in the original used to be equally horrible as well!

Yeah, if you don't have 6 guys before the terror mission on ironman...
... it's not going to be easy.
For my Impossible Ironmans I aim for 6 men group and laser rifles for the terror mission, that makes them a cakewalk.
Plus a mech, that flamethrower is pretty priceless for having 3 shots to take out groups of units.
Played with the random perks btw. That makes things...interesting.

All the missions before Carapace seem soo scary, then it gets easier for a while. But even then when you can't find cover it is a pain.. should have the patience to go around. How early do you get your first satellite uplink? Like do you build anything before it. The endgame in the expansion is a bit easier, which is a shame. In the end you were powerful in the original too but in here it is complete walkover.
God how do you approach those Alien ships? It is so easy to get flanked and it is goodbye soldier. Just feel like rocketing them to pieces but no, need dem resourses badly xD I do love the feeling on Ironman that each mission could be your last. High stakes.
Is it correct that if you shoot down a ufo it is enough to keep the panic from rising? Don't have to go and kill them?

No, I build 4 satellites and their uplink first. satellites are started on day 9, satellite uplink on day 15(or 13th, don't remember if it was 14 or 16 build days), if I remember correctly. So everything finishes on the 29th and you can launch them up, up and awayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
then I get cybernetics, then officer school and foundry, after they put tactical rigging into foundry you just need to get it asap unlike before.
Also, workshops are probably needed to be able to launch enough satellites, especially on impossible, so better hope for good steam positions or you're SCREWED
Why would you ever not go kill the UFO? ALL THAT CASH AND ELERIUM AND EVERYTHING
As to what comes to approaching alien ships, which ones? Simple, don't get flanked, hug defensible areas and NEVER EVER move units so you see new area if you already have enemies active.
Also, after mimetic skin everything becomes a cakewalk, you can just walk a bunch of heavies into everything and rocket all of them. It's so easy I've limited myself from using mimetic skin until I have all other genetics on a soldier, it's just that good.
Oh you can end your turn out of cover if you don't have activated enemies, so always move only half of the movement points so you can retreat to cover if necessary.
Remember to sell most of the stuff you get, especially corpses and early ufo power source, flight computers, if you're not planning on using them before the next two UFO downs and can do something with the money(AHEM satellites AHEM) so you can speed up your progress in the early game where it matters. Never sell weapon fragments though, they're in short supply on harder difficulties and it isn't viable to go directly to plasma on ironman anymore so you really need them.

I am just already dreading for the Supply Ships Aliens messing with my head probably. I don't remember if it is to be shot down or do I find it landed, hmm, I guess you find it landed. And I guess those come so late I should be able to take it out, but last time I faced one I had to load/save a dozen times. My Ironman is sooo gonna end there...
Yeah I was talking about those medium sized ufos that seem to have doors in a way that you can get flanked easily. But true, just moar cautious. And retreat if enemy contact at bad spot.
I never sell Alloys/Fragments, those are too valuable. The Power Sources are just awesome source of cash ;P

Those medium sized are easy, I practically never find any enemies when I'm ready to inside the ship. Then you just advance one door at a time, I usually flank the last room and stun the boss.
You can sell alloys and elerium if you need the cash, there's plenty of both to go around, weapon fragments I'm always missing because explosives.
Oh and you can blow a hole into the side of the alien ships if you know the placement of the computers, just blasting the hull and random objects is okay.
The supply ships, my god, those are BAD BAD objects. Not because of their size or crew or layout. But because the enemies teleport everywhere CONSTANTLY. It's a FRICKING PAIN. When you have ethereals teleporting behind your back, yeeeaaaaah...not nice. The times I've found the ethereals in the chamber they're supposed to be in can be counted with the fingers in one hand. The rest of the time they teleport behind me just as I've found a sectopod or something, just good christ.
ALL HAIL RAPID FIRE ASSAULTS! They usually pull my ass out of the fire in those situations. They oneshot ethereals you see.(and are really awesome against anything else too really)
Which is one of the reasons I have random perks on, I have heavies with lightning relfexes
This really, REALLY nerfs down the assault class, while sniper pretty much stays the same, as they are guaranteed to get squadsight at level 2.
I'm also actually using the grenadier perk and multiple smoke grenades I never picked before.
The bad thing with impossible ironman is that if you lose a soldier in any of the early missions it's' almost sure loss because of lowered will and lack of firepower after that so you need to restart. Otherwise it's a nice change from classic, the extra +50% HP to enemies seems really scary at first but once you learn to deal with it it's okay.
And mutons don't get extra hp
BUT ZOMBIES, DEAR GOD THE ZOMBIES, it's better to just run and wait for a chrysalis to be born because taking down 15 fricking HP with regular assault rifles...
...laser rifles crit with them all the time and they can crit for 8dam so they can oneshot crys and will twoshot zombies a lot becuase for some reason, the zombies are not protected against open terrain crits like the crys are.

Oh that teleport bug still exists on computer? I though they fixed the teleporting bug, I have never faced it myself (I am playing on X-box). That sounds awfull

It's not a bug, it's a feature. They never fixed it, they just made them teleport less often.
That is to say, they actually want it to be in the game. I snowing hate them for that, it makes no sense.
YES YES YES YES YES!
I got to 4th month without losing any countries!
I don't have plasma, I don't have titan armour, I don't have firestorms, I don't have any mecs, I don't have any foundry tech, I don't have any biotics and I've been constantly starved for credits. That's what it takes to not lose any countries.
The mission for alien base has to be done month 3 or you have to be very, very lucky with other missions. The problem with that is that you need to sacrifice space from your base for extra containment which basically means no foundry/cybernetics. In my case I didn't have steam on any of the top two layers so I needed to use 4 spots for power, which denied the other one from that combo. Thankfully I had good aim soldiers.
I've been playing with the random training path and while that can give some awesome bonuses to other units, like the armour bonus health to any class aside from sniper or heat ammo to anyone, it more often than not throws useless bonuses at you. Getting gunslinger for major promotion, yeah, just what I wanted on my support....
So not going to play with that after this, just too random choices.
Now that I'm at month 4 I have ridiculous money and I'm speed building everything I am missing. Time to get that foundry up and running!
Oh, and the only reason I got as far as I did is that I got a RIDICULOUS amount of grave injuries instead of deaths due to enemy fire.

That is sick dude! I am quite liberal in letting some countries just fall I am on late 4th month and did the Alien Base which unfortunately resulted in me losing my only Assault dude. Dem Mutons. It is effed up to try to take cover in the base when the plasma shots destroy it.. argh!
And as if that wasn't bad enough, my first Colonel (sniper btw) is called Justin Bieber! Can't even let him die!
