The Grail
When placed and about to edit it says "select allowable placement radius".
What does this mean?

It randomises the position of the Grail in-game, to help avoid predictability and keep the Obelisk quests necessary no matter how many times you play the map. If you type in "1" it can move to any unoccupied square one space away. Type in "2" and it can move somewhere up to two squares away. Etc.

the grail can certainly ruin things if it's placed too close to a base
question: on an islands random map, is it possible for the grail to be on an extremely tiny outlying island? e.g. the ones which only have a few spaces of hex to land on from where you can't even walk sometimes? i have never once seen this; just wondering if it's even possible for the grail to appear in such places. i'm guessing the random generator is coded to place the grail on only main areas

I don't like the fact that 90% of the time the best approach is brute force. Visit a small number of obelisks, get the idea on which screen the artifact is. Then recruit a bunch of heroes and keep digging. It's almost never practical to visit ALL obelisks, and for all remaining cases 15% obelisks is as effective as 95% obelisks, but you save time. There's no incentive to visit more.
Unless I'm missing something. Is there a guarantee that revealed puzzle pieces, without X on them, will not have the artifact ?

I know a guy for whom 1 (1!!) obelisk is more than enough 90% of the time. He actually wrote a 30+ page booklet on the pitfalls and general tips and tricks of grail hunting... and it's surprisingly handy, with accurate cost/effectiveness ratios, optimum digging strategy, Puzzle Map quirks, and everything. Shame he doesn't share it with anyone, he really does get the grail super early most of the time.
It's not for sale, and he made it for private use. I just thought I'd mention it as a funny side note. And yes, I know it sounds unbelievable, that's why it's funny in an awesome way.

@Polyglot: Nice sales presentation. So the guy wrote 30 pages in order to not show them to anyone? How much do you want for that guide?

For any decent player, recruiting "a bunch" of heroes for grail purpose is out of question. In most cases you can reserve a single hero for this task and it still hits your economy or expansion very hard.
Digging for the grail with only a few obelisk visited is counter productive. And in general the grail is a loss of time, a secondary hero should generate much more income or expansion profit instead of digging for weeks.
Exception: conflux. For that I would put all 8 heroes to dig once I have idea where is it. But conflux grail is pure cheating.

IDK, I saw it only one time, but IIRC it contained a couple of probability graphs and other assorted images.

I believe Einstein showed in something like 3 or 4 pages that E = mc2. You rarely need 30 to display a few probabilities about the Grail

On a small map one can easily find the grail - just need 1 or 2 obelisks, you will see some key-terrain detail on the puzzle map and on the regular map, recruit - run - dig. It's too impractical tho and getting the grail if one gets a lucky guess just ruiiiins the game.
I fail to see the point to write a 30 page research paper on something that is too obvious, just takes a little bit of practice. The probability theory is quite pointless - eventually you will just go for a lucky guess.
On a side note, if you play one of the maps I designate ( ), you can be damn sure I will have the grail on some time during the 1st week
