Trick for saving movement
Hello everyone!
Didn't find a thread that seemed to talk about it and I wanted to share this, so I'm starting one myself!
I don't know if this is commonly known or not, if I'm an idiot for discovering this so late or not. But see, ever since the game came out, when I was sending my armies to battle, I'd always click right next to the monster/army, and not directly on it. I had in my mind that it saved the one movement point. It may not sound a lot, but think about how many battles you fight in a single Heroes map. A lot, right? That's how many movement points you saved.
Regardless, that was just an impression. In today's video update (of my LP) I got around to actually testing that, and it works! (and yes, the link will take you directly to what I'm talking about, don't worry I've learned)
Hopefully that's actually useful!

yes i noticed this phenomenon also (me also a bit late?). I noticed it in a game vs AI - Rise to Power. As many of you probaley know, computer player always tends to stand "one move ahead" so you just can't reach him (argh this is annoying!). But!
If I clicked on his hero to attack, mine was just one step too short. So after pointing mouse right next to him (but not on him), it turned into sword and i could just reach him and defeat him voila!
I always try to use this technique, as in some cases oponnent is actualy not "out of reach", but just seems so - it's strange i know - but i think in H5 this was also the case. One thing is for sure. You can (sometimes) attack neutral armies from different "angle", by pointing mouse on diferent pixel, thus saving movement points (or spending more than needed) when creeping.

well I've never seen it discussed so maybe that's a known fact that everybody just thinks everybody else knows. I had just assumed it worked that way up to now, but now that I've tested it I was just tossing the info out there for anyone who - like me - did not necessarily know 'bout it.

You can also save a few of your main hero's MP by taking all his army off him by a secondary hero at the beginning of a day (turn). Then, if your main hero needs the army to fight, just give it back. This 'trick' literally redistributes movement points between heroes, but often you wish your main hero could move farther, and you don't care about your secondary hero's MP.

Hahaha I was waiting for that one.
Long ago, ze nets did not allow a programmer to correct his game. He threw it out there as perfect as he could and hoped for the best.
That didn't mean the game was perfect. Most had bugs and quirks. Even the best games. The one thing about those games is that even those quirks contributed to the charm of the game. Best example is maybe Starcraft BW. I know it did get some updates, but even then, the game is far from completely unbugged.
All this to say that this bug as you call it is personnally a little quirk that I can play with. Really couldn't care less if it stayed in the game. It's just a small detail that you can choose to take advantage of or completely ignore. It doesn't even discriminate and advantage one over the other. And it doesn't change your life knowing about it (or the other way around).

I don't know if this is a bug or feature. I first noticed it in heroes 4 when they would walk several tiles to attack you if you stop, it was in H5 as well.

Actually it was ever since H1 that creeps attacked players as soon as they entered neighboring space.
So whre is the bug at?

Yep exactly, I play that way since my early Heroes days.
The bug would be not to have that feature again.

Obviously, it's a bug. In HoMM I-III there's no difference, in terms of MP, whether you click directly on neutrals or just right next to them.

I never seen it in H5 so maybe I misunderstand something in this thread or not noticed. As far as I knew, you can't be next to an enemy or monster without attacking or being attacked and I thought movement points used when moving to attack something are based on actual squares moved.
ofc when I pick up something on the map (not fights) I try to pick up on a non-diagonal where beneficial because picking up something costs movement points & picking up something diagonally is same as moving diagonally (1.41 vs 1).
One question, it wouldn't be unintended side-effect of snatch in H6 would it?

my hero in the video does not have snatch, so no.
And if you watch the video (which I'm certain some of you are commenting on it without seeing it) the point is that if I'm double-clicking directly on the ennemy (hero here, maybe it works on creeps too? I kinda just assumed so. maybe need to test this further) the battle does not trigger at the same place. When I click right in front of him it triggers right in front of him. When I click on him it only triggers once my hero tries to move on him. It will not trigger right next to him like when you're clicking right next to him. That is established by my hero stopping right next to him without any battles happening.
And so if it always works that way, then you're always using one more movement point if you're clicking on the ennemy because the battle triggers one movement point later than if you're clicking right in front of him.

Hmm, weird! Does it work the same for both heroes and creeps (neutral stacks)?

What?!
1) Creeps never walk in HOMM V. They are stationary.
2) In HOMM IV you can turn that feature off.

He's not talking about creatures walking, he's talking about the bug.
Replace the "it"s with "the bug", you'll get what he's saying better.
Also I tested it on creeps, did not make a video out of it though. With the same situation (you click directly on the creature and you are missing the final movement point) the battle did trigger.
However I then made a second test. What happens if you do have all the movement points you need? When I clicked right next to the creature I had 17 MP leftover, when I clicked right on it I had 16. So the trick still works, the difference is when you run out of MP right at the end. Against heroes that'll prevent the actual battle from happening, but for creeps it'll simply trigger the battle earlier than normal.

Obviously, Miru's native tongue is not English.
I have a hard time understanding the sentence I quoted (which was written by him), if what you say is true.
(My native tongue isn't English either.)
In HOMM IV, the neutrals DID walk around .

English ain't my native tongue either. He's just saying that he discovered the bug in the fourth game with the ennemies moving around (however that worked for him...) and that it (the bug) was still there in the fifth game.
