Quote: I have a good antivirus so no problem with exe in general. Mods already converted to era by you are safe. Mods converted to sfx by noobs are a problem and you can't guarantee they will be harmless. When Fred released his graphic patch, he tried to make sfx, I downloaded it then it blocked my computer, impossible to kill the process in task manager, all froze, had to reboot and then had a 2 hours HD scan because it damaged something.
So when new users release mods as exe files, you can't be sure they are safe, and even if antivirus says nothing, they can harm.
Quote: what has 2.5has anything to do with it?
It has everything. Before 2.2 any mod unrared in root folder was considered enabled. Now it needs exe file and post install command. When is properly done and you know the guy, is perfect. But it seems few people know to do that.
woah, man. are you saying there was a virus in my .exe, or was it just configured wrong? if you got a virus, maybe i do. and i would have to fix that. i didn't put anything in the file that wasn't supposed to be there, and i did everything according to the .exe you gave me. or are you talking about my first couple of attempts?
and, if people were properly instructed on how to make the exe file in the first place, i doubt you would have problems with it. my latest fixes to my uploads shouldn't have any problems. nobody else is reporting any, anyway.

I did not accuse you in first place, I clicked on that exe while I should not have. Obviously you had no idea how to make it, which brings:
Bersy is telling Ayeron to ignore antivirus warnings for era mods. This is very wrong: if it was only Bersy releasing exe files, then it would not be a problem. But anyone can just make an exe, say is an era mod then infect everyone around in this way.
Very few people know that you can unrar such exe. They don't have to know, installing a game should not require technical knowledge, modding only yes. For example, tew 4 got 600 downloads in maps4heroes: half of them complained about antivirus warnings. They don't know me: who am I to ask them to shut of their antivirus? They won't.

Salamandre let me get this straight. and maybe everyone will then know how. What I did for my mod:
1) Press add to archive with winrar, renamed to desired .exe
2) Pressed create sfx option
3) went into sfx advanced options, added \Tools\installmod.exe "My mods name" into the box to run after install
4) Packed
Is there another step people need to take, or is this it? I was using a profile in winrar Bersy gave me, but I've since lost it.

@ kegolo- that seems right, i'm not positive on what exactly to put in the sfx option(i have a rar saved that i copy and paste from), but that sounds about right.
the reason i think you accused me, salamandre, is because you mentioned my mod- and you also mentioned something alluding to viruses, and people not knowing how to make things. if you know anything about the human brain, you will know it associates things, and in your post you associated my mod with "virus that almost destroyed my computer", and with "people who do not know how to make .exe's". i put those not-exact quotes from you in quotations, because, that is the way a human brain will read that.
and as far as "obviously not knowing how to make .exe's", i will repeat again, i did them per YOUR instructions. your instructions seemed to miss the part about the ".sfx option". even if half of the problem was on my end(because of the error in zeobjts), the other half was on yours.

Salamandre, virus can be in:
1) erm script
2) bin file
3) dll file
So what should we do?

I only propose to release era mods as *rar, to get rid of the majority antivirus warnings, which is a turn off. Then if there is really a virus, the users are responsible for not having a good antivirus.
Right now, majority of (cheap) antiviruses show false positive for every era *exe. I have latest Kaspersky, which keep me safe most of time, but is rather expensive.

Such a "NANO" thing is hand made and not known anywhere. You see, sfx are clean.

But avast and bit defender report virus almost every time, at least those reporting had avast. Avast and bit defender are the most common antiviruses used (probably free).
Well, as you wish, personally I can handle the issue, it just makes me more work to gently talk with enraged players.

Just tell players to change the file extension to rar, scan, and see it's clean. Some scanners will say all unknown exes are viruses, so that should put the doubters at ease.

It's not that I think there's a virus in the package. Of course there isn't. I've been following this forum for more than three years now, I know when to trust a download and a user. But the antivirus warning does scare away the majority of the players who do not know anything about RAR files, ERA or the paranoia-level of their antivirus program. Not that I'm an expert on either of those subjects, but you'll get the point. Just saying: the EXE is probably harmless, but a warning scares people away.

It's heuristics thats alerts. Heuristics always have more false positive alerts than real. When real virus is caught, its signature is written in database. Anyway, if you prefer mods in archives, it's ok. Use mod manager to install mod directly from archive (7z, rar, zip, etc).

Quote: I would like to present my work over the last year. The team is called the Covenant, a sci-fi alien race from the Halo series.
ENJOY!!
Is there any chance, that this town will be released as Mod for VCMI anytime soon?
It will be great, 'cause VMCI already has mods for Cove and Preserve.
This Covenant Town is cool. I played it awhile. But replacing standard towns is troublesome - not all new towns may be integrated into one Heroes 3 folder. VCMI allows to provide new towns a place for coexist peacefully

Beware, modder! Maybe Macron1 is already benefitting from your work!

Hello Mr. Kegolo. I tried your faction and it's interesting although I think the start is too hard at higher difficulties (since early units kinda suck). At easier-mid difficulties the faction can be quick to catch on since buildings and creatures are dirt cheap.
Although I experienced some bugs. The creature that is first given sometimes disappears after turn 1 or after I load a game. Sometimes I had my game crash at random points.
In any case, thank you for the mod. Though I do agree that the units can get dull to look at after a while it is still a playable faction with a different playstyle.

I cannot get the Covenant option to not be gray.
Hello all. Wonderful looking mod! I really want to try it but I cannot get the box to ungray in the WoG options. Here is an image of what I am looking at. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Also - working with Heroes 3 Complete no-CD with ERA 2.46 installed (I think...) as well as the allinone wog 3.58f installed. Thank you!

Do not install WoG 3.58 on Complete and run only h3era.exe. Era has no "gray" options at all (this feature was removed).

None of my Covenant Troops are ranged
In the troop description for a few troops it says that they can shoot or are shooters yet none of them seem to be ranged. Is this normal?
Thank you!
