Yes I use aimed shots all the time, I fire at the eyes and critical sometime. Don't see any reason to aim somewhere else.
Can't really argue about the weapons since I've only seen small guns so far, I'm guessing people who specialize in Big Guns or Energy Weapons only get their share in the endgame.
Look, it's obviously an awesome game, just hard to enjoy when you don't have nostalgia backing you up.

Not at all, you just don't find big and energy early (but you do find them much before the end).
As for the rest - shooting overgrown rats and bugs ain't fun, you need to face enemies with comparable firepower and superior numbers to start thinking what should be shot where, etc.
Edit: by the way I'm also talking about melee and unarmed combat which could be pretty interesting too.

Well I'm starting over now that I'm a bit more familiar with the mechanics.
I may sound a bit negative but I actually do enjoy the game very much.
Gonna make a melee/big-guns character I think...

Be careful, some towns have kids that steal from you. If you have a party member, they may agro and kill the kid, then quit your party because you're suddenly a child killer.

Just an advise - melee/unarmed characters have difficulties initially due to the lack of good armour to absorb the unavoidable damage and the respective perks to boost your close combat performance. Don't expect to do much against prepared opponents initially (gung ho vs. Radscorpions with a knife for example will probably have pretty bad results). Small guns are more or less a must to get through the first stages of the game without too much trouble, then you can switch to whatever you want - you'll have enough skill points to develop at least 2-3 skills to a very good level before the end so don't worry.

True in theory, less so much in practice. I remember kicking the living **** of the scorpions with a good melee fighter. Just need to be prepared to with a couple of stimpacks.

Stimpacks aren't actually abundant and are pretty costly so better spare them for major fights. I've killed Radscorpions with punches and kicks for that matter and ended up with no healing tools and poisoned as hell. Not pretty when some blokes suddenly decide to fire SMGs at you.

I went a full unarmed character. Aimed punches to the eyes. Squish brain. You want to max agility (action points), Luck (criticals), high endurance. The perks for boosting criticals/better criticals, action boy, ect. What you don't want is "heavy handed" because that is counterproductive for criticals.

Old Fallouts were never melee-friendly. it was doable but clearly inferior to ranged weaponry. The biggest issue was obviously wasting AP to get to the target & problems with finishing fleeing opponents.
Bethesda Fallouts, however... that's a different story ;p

Purely melee/unarmed character is highly inflexible but with the right perks works pretty well. I remember beating a squad of 4 or 5 super-mutants with just a piece of Combat Armour and a Power Fist without using a Stimpack (or using just one, can't remember). Same against Deathclaws (even the Mother Deathclaw). And where distance is a problem, you can always combine your karate with something ranged (Power Fist + (Turbo) Plasma Rifle is pretty unfair).

I was thinking of using a minigun until the enemy gets close, and then super-sledging the enemy back and continue the process.
Though I figure the hardest enemies are probably ranged so I dunno...
Smoothtalking gunslinger seems like the most enjoyable way to play.

Keep using the minigun even at point blank range. Gore galore. Even worth the ammo.

The general cookie-cutter character is Small guns+ Lockpick + Speech (for both games).
Minigun is most effective at point blank range

Yeah, the Minigun can take down anything weaker than a Deathclaw (meaning everything which is not a Deathclaw and even they may go down at once if you score a good critical) in one burst if it's close enough. That's not true in Fallout 2 though, even the AP 5mm rounds have no chance against Power Armour.
As for the Small Guns - they are less effective in Fallout 1 than they are in Fallout 2 simply because there is no Gauss Rifle in the first game. I usually finish it with a Turbo Plasma Rifle or a Minigun (that's not to say that you can't use something else though).

That's not entirely true. Fallout system provides six "grades" of critical hits from 1 - least powerful to 6 - instant kill. They also differ depending on where you hit.
Torso critical grades 2-5 iirc (or 3-5, don't remember) ignore armor enitrely
Critical grade 6 - well, it kills you.
There's an iirc 80% chance (with better criticals perk) to score an armor piercing/killing critical hit with any weapon
And sniper allows luck roll for critical hits. 10 luck = 100% crit chance
So it's kinda easy to kill people in Power Armors with minugns (every armor piercing critical from short range is instant death)
There are of course better weapons to use along with Sniper and high luck than regular minigun. (vindicator minigun, to name one)

it's true, turbo plasma rifle is usually the best weapon in Fallout 1, if you don't want to bother with Alien Blaster and its abysmal range.
As for Fallout 2, in general Gauss Pistol is much stronger than Gauss Rifle, by the way.

With the right perks most weapons can become lethal no matter the target, I don't dispute that. Sniper is a pretty late game perk though, it's likely that you'll finish the game (most quests anyway) before you even get it so most of the times you'll have to rely on "random" criticals to do serious damage with small-calibre weapons such as the Minigun vs. highly armoured enemies. It's not like it's not possible - I had a sequence of deaths once when entering Mariposa in Fallout 1 because one Minigun-armed super-mutant developed the habit to score criticals through my Power Armour, essentially one-shoting me every time - but it's hardly necessary because you usually have other tools at your disposal.
In Fallout 1 there are very few heavily armoured enemies anyway so the Minigun can deal with almost everything even without too much specialisation. Fallout 2 is a different matter though.
