OMG I'm totally going to custom build my own goddamn computer. I'm psyched for it. This sounds so effing exciting and fun. I'm going to have glowing orange nuclear liquid coolers and Desert Eagles strapped to the outside and stuff.
(I'm not going to do it for at least another several months though cause right now I don't really have a need.)

@Nocturnal: Neat cabling
Man now I feel like upgrading to a different case... I wanna rebuild.
Get a new motherboard and CPU while I'm at it...
Oh right, there is absolutely no practical need for me to do anything of this right now. Darn.

Looks a bit overpriced even for 400 GBP. An average piece of metal, will run most of the new things decently but in 2 years will be completely obsolete. I usually look for a combo which will perform more of less well for no less than 3 years after the purchase (like my current machine) so I'm a bit biased, mind you.

I've hadmy current vista for 7 years and its components started dying on me, had to purchase new video card and sound card, I was also on the verge of purchasing a new CPU, because it began to completely screw me over and die randomly on me, but that's no longe the case so I've got a PC to work with, but it's not much good for gaming.
I can run Heroes 5 and total war games (quality 0 settings though).

Clicky
Has a Quad-Core and USB 3.0 which the other one doesn't. Looks like a more solid buy to me.
EDIT:
Also "build your own PC cuz you get way more for your money" yadayadayada is of course my real recommendation ^^

I strongly advise against getting something with an AMD processor unless you both have a low budget and often use multithreaded applications (such as Photoshop). For normal use (and gaming), Intel beats AMD at every price point.

They're not really that different... sometimes Intel releases something extraordinary and then AMD does the same thing... and it bounces back and forth.
I prefer AMD myself because I was raised with it and I know it well.

Cyrix, etc. I remember very well.. Now, AMD is a good machine..
It would be no comparison, Intel would be forced to.. Hm AMD was the difficulty of the economy.. But the GeForce is my number one brand

Intel and AMD go back and forth. Several years ago, AMD was better, but if you're buying a computer now, Intel's Sandy Bridge (and now Ivy Bridge) are better than AMD's Bulldozer.

Is this going to have a genuine effect on my gaming experience, or is this simply a matter of preference?

I'd personally go with an AMD machine over an Intel one because I both think it's better and I prefer it. I also know it better.
