If we take into account that you are only getting one of them... goblins. They are just... OMG, 3% defense and 19 HP, with only 2-3 damage...

No, there are not. Which is why I suspect the topic-creator may have selected the wrong subforum.

A better question would be, of the recruitable units, which do you think is the most useless? This then goes beyond simple stats, and since they all more or less have a use, which are more or less useful, it's not exactly easy to answer.

And to answer my own question, I'd hesitate between goblin, skeleton, and maniac, though they can all be useful in some situations.

Without upgrades Id say marksman and sister. Marksman does pitiful damage, and they are supposed to be a dps unit. Their other stats aren't too great either. Sisters do a ton of damage but they are too squishy to really be practical. Of course, with their upgrades they become two of the better cores in the game.

Yeah I was talking with upgrades. In my mind, to know how useful a unit is, you need to take into consideration, not only its stats, but also how it works with the rest of the army. You can't seriously expect to have a full army, just not upgraded. It's a little silly.

Sisters would need protection, but their damage is certainly high. Especially since they do bonus dmg to 2/5 factions. And marksmen, as weak as you might consider them, are your only ranged attackers. And they can't be as weak as the unupgraded goblins, which are NOT the only archers (though the only core ones, obviously).

You're thinking late game. If it weren't for the fact that Haven cores need their upgrades badly you probably wouldn't get upgraded cores until week 2 or 3, possibly even later depending on how much crystal you can get. The "final battle" versus your opponents army may usually decide the game, but your early creeping decides the final battle.

You don't need range. When I was like 7 I loved ranged units the most, but I honestly think now that sacrificing hit points for the ability to hit any target is not that great. Sure you can choose any target any time. Yes, you often get one extra attack at the beginning. But I honestly think that melee fighters usually end up being better. The only reason I like crossbowmen is because I can often average 2 or more stacks hit per shot, and their pierce is great late game versus stoneskin (one of the best abilities in the game IMO) or other high defense armies. Also if you account for the fact that you get so many of them, goblins actually do more damage.

Goblins only do their full damage from close range though... making them weaker than the Marksman still. And as their ability only creates a trap on the field, they are easily outclassed by the full-ranged Piercing Marksman/ Crossbowman. Growth really doesn't count for much, when you still deal terrible damage with a full week of troops. Really, the only thing the goblins have going for them is their speed/ initiative...

Yes, I'm thinking lategame, and yeah, a battle that has the 2 sides balanced. You know, a fun battle. Also, is calling me 7 supposed to be an insult of some kind? You're funny.

I tend to like/dislike troops depending on how well they do their job, whatever that may be, if they have one. Like Gnome said, goblins have very little damage unless the ennemy is in their face. Maniacs are not much good at anything, really. Skeletons are the same as goblins. If you want to talk strictly early game, neither of these troops are particularly good, except maybe maniacs if you sacrifice a few to save some dogs. That's useful. Somewhat.

Maniacs still have rather high damage compared to most core critters, and they can be useful as an inferno Core tank, given their relatively high numbers and HP compared to their companion creatures. Also, their insane laughter can be used to cut the effectiveness of creatures such as the Sentinel, Marksman and Goblin (-1 damage is half of their attack power. ) very effectively for a turn. Though I do agree that the ability is generally ineffective (Especially due to it's duration. I mean really, one turn?), they are far from worthless if used properly.

... so only shoot at the close ones. They can still shoot half the battlefield, and it's not like its rare for the enemy to get that close or anything.

I wasn't calling you 7. When I was bad at the game I was obsessed shooters and over time I've shifted away from that. People tend to over value shooter, it really isn't that great.

Maniacs are great. If you account for the fact that you get so many, they get both the second most hit points and damage per week. They don't have as many buffer hit points before the first one dies, so it is easier for them to bleed off in small battles. Their stats are otherwise wonderful, they are above average at everything except magic defense. Demented fall behind in stats considerably. I agree that skeletons aren't the greatest.

Ah but sisters also get pacification. Fairly practical if you ask me.

Pacification is great, maybe even overpowered when fighting small battles where you and the enemy only have like 3 stacks each, but the more stacks you and they have the less it means. It's not really that they are that squishy so much that I don't want to risk them because their upgrades are so valuable.
