how to make fog? and other questions...

i've tried contacting greeemlin, i guess he is a pretty busy guy.

1. i'm wondering, does anyone know how one could make fog for H3? i tried it myself, with greeemlin's downloadable stuff from his thread, i have tried copying what he did, recreating what he did, AND creating from scratch(both H3 way and with PS fog brushes). when trying to create defs from bitmaps i have made in PhotoShop, i keep getting "bitmap image is not valid", and "I/O error 131" (in Defmaker). can anyone help me with this?

2. plus, after i get this problem fixed, i want to also(and i know how hard this sounds): create a 24 hour timeline in heroes3, so that there is a night and day, with sounds switching over (crickets and such), and light-to-dark graphics. i know it sounds great, but getting that to happen is, well, what would i need? would i have to rip another game's stuff for that to happen, then try to incorporate that, or would i need to recreate H3 on THEIR game engine?

the bottom line of all this is that i want to create as realistic a feeling as possible to heroes3. i am already working on the Necromancer stuff, i have the sounds i want, the audio i have for the castle is much creepier now(and, along with the inferno castle and dungeon castle, more realistic, i think). i am working on one thing, and then another, jumping around really, taking the music out and replacing it with real life audio. it already feels more real to me, but i am nowhere near complete. for now, i am focusing on fog. then i want to work with overhead clouds, that move across the screen...

The suicidal way:

a) ignore erm and have ideas
b) start on graphics
c) when done, learn erm or spam for help around
d) then realize can't be done

Fog was already done but ate a lot of memory as it came as png + defs + alpha plugin. It was nice though but immobile, don't think there was a way to make it move across the screen.

For night and day, you can modify your monitor settings. Darker for night, lighter for day. Keep the hand on buttons.

The fog from greemlin's mod looks amazing. I can see why you have such an obsession with it. I would love to have it as well.

THANK YOU, salamandre. i think the problem i was having was that the alpha.dll that i had (that came with the pac that i got from greeemlin) was a 3.3.3.3 version. yours didn't have that appendix(?). i've already been working on my own fog, now i can make it see-thru. i have so many ideas, it's hard to keep track of them all. i've been bouncing around from one thing to the next, usually completely unrelated from the last. as soon as i get a sizable group of things to present to the gang here, i'll let ya'll have a look-see at what i've been up to...

thanks again, salamandre. i will look forward to your critique when i upload the stuff i've been working on.

new problem, completely unrelated from the last...

i am running wog+era v1.8, and my exe stopped running after doing my first manual creature change. i had thought the problem was the .wog file i used to install a different version of the blood dragons (i remember people saying that you couldnt install a wog file in era), but after running the exe from a backup, that had the new wog file installed, i saw that that wasnt the issue, as it ran just fine. apparently, when i added the new files manually for a new ghost(just copy and paste over the old files with the same name), i found my h3sprite file to be corrupt. now, i replaced the ghost battle def, the adventure map def(along with the .msg and .msk files), and the cprsmall, twcrport, avwattak. i replaced just the pictures with the same names. would the game still work if not all of the pictures matched? i didnt modify the un44 file, would that be a problem?

or is it that the files i manually added into the cprsmall, twcrport, and avwattak are too small? the pics were the same size, but when it asked if i wanted to replace the old file with the new one, i remember the files being of different sizes( the new one being smaller). can anyone tell me what's wrong?

It sounds like you changed 20 different things, any could be the problem. However, things loaded by the exe before the game starts, which could start a crash, maybe cprsmall has too few pictures? That's about the only thing I can think of, so re check that file.

And deftool doesn't allow you to add pictures that are the wrong size, so if you got around that somehow...you're doing it wrong.

yeah, i know about the deftool image multiple thingy, i have all the multiples on a .txt file, as a reminder . i will recheck the ones that were made for the creature i added, and see if the sizes are right. but what if all of the pictures aren't replaced? would that make a difference?

I don't know how you make a def without all the frames. Some may be the same as before, but you need all of them in whatever folder deftool is using or else there will be a problem. So yes it's fine to just change one picture, but you need all 198 pictures in that folder even if only 1 is being swapped.

yeah, i rebuilt the def from scratch. so i don't know.

i seem to be having a problem with defmaker. first it was putting stuff out of order, then it was moving all the def's to the left a little( so that i had to move them back in deftool), and now it's inverting the colors of random pics in a def(in the process of making). i'm going to see if there is an updated version, or something. this one's starting to get under my skin.

searched, and i'm using defmaker version 8.5. doesn't seem to be an updated version past that. sooooo.... huh. i will keep at it.

dont use defmaker. use defpreview to get all thepictures and list out, and then deftool.

hey salamandre, can you tell me why my heroes exe file suddenly stopped working, and the ONLY way i could get it to start working again was to delete your fog defs from the lod, and from the replace file?

I've never used defmaker. Just use deftool to make the creature it's easy. Choose the type, fill in the frames, done. Why would you make your life harder than it has to be?

fred79, I have no idea what manipulations you make-from what I read your H3 folder must be a deadly mess-. My "fog" was a mod for ERA, if you use in your lod for 3.58, perish!

yeah man, i'm running era 1.8. another thing i recently found... one of the maps that i have been perfecting for 2 years was found to be missing chunks of trees. i checked the passability, and the red boxes were still there, but the trees weren't. i manually added them back in, over the whole map. so far that's all i found to be missing. what i want to know is, when i read about the problems with the see-thru fog, i came across, "it leaves holes in memory", or something like that, not sure of exact words now. but, is that what that means? that the graphics just disappear from maps?

and as far as perishing, no. i don't think i will.
