I am putting the Samsung on ice as it will not receive Android 4.0 update. What a shame.
You now, you could just root it and get ICS that way...
And yeah, these chinese people are awesome, but you gotta be carefull not to buy some garbage you can't get rid afterwards
And I have to agree with clay_man, smartphones really aren't that expensive anymore. I got my huawei ideos x3 for 99 euros and it's working perfectly good, it's just a bit slower than the top phones and i can't play über-3d-games on it, but seriously, paying like 300 euro more for this isn't worth it.

True that. This actually makes me reconsider it.

True, true. That is my problem to be honest. I dont really want to give
200 euroe and then have a broken device by 6 months.
At least 2 years would suffice to me.
I went a bit lower with my expectations and am currently considering this: ZTE Atlas
800MHz qualcom Single core
Android 2.3
512 MB ram
3.5'' display
480 x 800 resolution
Problem is, its ZTE, a chinese telecom corporation.
And the problem comes from this http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/05/18/us-zte-phone-idUSBRE84H08J20120518

I went on with the Samsung Galaxy ace 2.
Too much risk involved in the cheaper chinese devices. The reviews say its good so its the second cheapest dual core phone.
Overall, its a snowty market. Below 200 euro, you wont get anything without a big letdown.
Either snowty resolution, snowty size, snowty CPU, snowty OS, snowty framework.
Companies like Sony, Motorola, sometimes LG have lots of snowty budget phones. Pure ripoff.
Personal advice, if you dont need a good smartphone, stick to Nokia.

Well, for cheap handys huawei is very good. Huawei and ZTE are the only chinese company i would trust.
Also if somebody here thinks about buying a tablet I'd like to promote the nexus 7. I have this thing and it's absolutley awesome!

Galaxy ace 2 and S Advance are rumored to get jellybean or Android 4.1 update
Quote:
A recent post on Samsung Bulgaria’s Facebook page, spotted by GSMArena, states that the update from Gingerbread to Jelly Bean will indeed be available at some point in the future, which would move both phones up to the latest version of the Android OS. You should really take this with a grain of salt until the updates actually arrive. Statements like this from Samsung Facebook pages have been wrong in the past, so it’s really not entirely official. Whatever the case, we’ve already seen that Samsung’s working on Jelly Bean for many of its budget-driven tablets, so it’s not really a surprise that these two handsets would be getting this upgrade.
Also, I wanted to update this site. I got the phone,Galaxy ace 2.
At first I thought it would be bigger but anyway, it size of 3.7 coll is acceptable.
Its touch screen is amazing, very responsive and non lagy
It has a TFT screen but screen colors are still beautiful,at least for me.480*800 pixels.
There is no camera zoom, but the picture quality is neat. It has a 5 MP back and 1.3 MP front camera. I dont really care about the zoom though.Video quality is good, HD quality. So nothing to criticize there. No fps drop.
Everything runs smoothly,no wonder because its a dualcore smartphone.
The only time it stutters is when I opened a 430 page PDF file.
The speaker quality is also good. I can clearly hear people. Also, others reported that they can clearly hear me aswell.
Signal quality is a bit lower, 3 bars instead of 4. My old nokia has full signal stength.
The stock headphones were cheap, nothing special. They were not comfortable.
Music quality with my headphones could be better. I also have not found out yet how to use the equalizer.
Most of the special apps require internet. Things like samsung app store, music hub etc.
It has polaris office, voice recorder, FM radio,GPS\Glonass, and so on.
It has no pre-installed games.
It has 1 GB space for "USB storage" and 1 GB "System" storage.
And one thing I am very happy about, no snowing itunes clone to transfer music to the phone. I can transfer what I wish.
My PC did not have any problem detecting the phone, kudos to windows.
Otherwise, I also have a samsung notebook so that could be a factor aswell.
Since it is rumored to get android 4.1, it might be a good deal.
Currently, its with gingerbread.

Instead of creating a new thread, I wanted to share some new developments in the phone indusrty.
As you might already know, iphone 5 is out.
I dont want to skew the opinion here so I am being neutral, but I am not a big fan of apple.
Here are the specs: For the iphone 5
Link
Here is a short list of the most important things.
Processor: Dual-core 1.2 GHz Apple A6(Custom ARMv7)

Card slot: No
Internal: 16/32/64 GB storage, 1 GB RAM

Important note: No google maps.
Iphone 5 vs 4s picture comparison:
Link2
I dont want to compare it the Galaxy S3 because they are not even comparable, except for the price range.
In case somebody wants to know the specs of the S3, here is the link:
S3 link
While the iphone 5 is a good smartphone, its not a good phone compared to its price.
Quote:
Canada
iPhone 5 Price: C$699 (16GB), C$799 (32GB) and C$899 (64GB).
United Kingdom
iPhone 5 Price: £529 (16GB), £599 (32GB) and £699 (64GB).
Link
Note: Old news, but still interesting. I wonder why people order so many iphones. 2 million preorders on a 700 dollar phone.

Oh, I also bought the ace 2 recently, totally forgot you went for this one, too. And I found it for only about 119 euros.
This is just so much better than my old Huawei ideos x3 (which broke...)!
The only thing that i don't like about it is this storage thing, so one can't put apps on a external sd cart but only on the two internal places. But I guess Samsung had to limitate somewhere for to sell it so cheap without rivalling it's own better phones.
Also I wouldn't believe this Samsung Bulgaria thing too much, maybe they just didn't understand something or are only joking around.
As for the iPhones, well, i just don't care about them, they're so extremely overpriced i just don't know why one would buy it for such a high price...
EDIT
And ace 2's 3.8" big

HD videos? Yeah it's good to have HD when you're on a tiny 4 inch display...

I don't know if there are gigabits of ram (yet) in handys but the dualcore is for running everything smooth and playing (good) 3d games on your phone Videos I don't watch hd movies on the my handys (because you really don't need so high resolutions on that little screens) so i din't know if one needs dualcore processors for that...
So, it's not actually necessary, but when you can have it, why not?

119 euro? WTF? Did you buy it on contract or unlocked? I bought it for 230 euro unlocked-no contract.

Hmm, I have not bought an SD card yet. I believe that you should check this site:
http://androidforums.com/
AFAIKm, that happens because the phone has an internal SD card. When you get a sd card, the phone ignores the second one.
Quote:

That is why it is a rumor. I could bet that there wont be any update because its not on that important. They dont care about entry level or budget smartphones.
Quote:

I could say the same for the other highend phones aswell. Serously, the samsung s3 is around 500 euro and the iphone 5 is around 700 dollars.
For that price, you would get a notebook,or a 1 week in a sunny beach.
Quote:
And ace 2's 3.8" big
Its actually funny. The ace 2 is comparable to the iphone 4s and is half the price. Its not bad, 3.8 inch is optimal.
Quote: Somebody please enlighten me why would you need dualcore processors and gigabytes of ram in your smartphone? (honest question)

I can give you an informed answer. One of my relatives has a single core Nokia phone,324 MB ram and symbian operating system. I dont know his exact model, but I remembered it how it worked when I checked it.
Compared to the phone i own now, ACE 2, it was very slow, got a pixelated screen and had an overall bad internet experience(Long browser loadtimes),laggy page swipe and so on.
The fact that my phone is dual core 800 mhz makes it faster to run apps. It has 768 MB ram which means that you can multitask with it.
You cant do that with normal phones or low end smartphones that fast.
And believe me, HD on 3.8 inch screen is not that bad. I love watching HD vidoes on my phone.
It all depends on how you want to use your phones. I use my phone mainly for listening music, watching videos on long journeys, reading PDF files and of course calling people.
What I liked about the music player is that it is able to play FLAC files and does not need an itunes copycat for basically copying music.
I believe that sony has that type of garbage.
It did not want a compromise so the ACE2 seemed to be the jack of all trades. It does everything right compared to its competitors on the same price range, except it not being an Android 4.0 or 4.1

Yeah, I know that, the external sd cart can only be used for videos, music, etc.
Also I use the german android forum. From there I got to know that when you root the phone you can swap the sd carts so the phone thinks the external card is the internal and the other way. I might do that when the garanty expires, because I'd like to install these bigger games now that I have such a good device.

Yeah, you're right in this point, but never the less the iPhone is extremely overpriced compared to the android high-end devices.

Because there has popped up a marked for mobile phone games, and because they actually has 3D proccesors and the interface is good enough to get stuff done, its basically for mobile gaming. And because of the centralized distribution platform, they can actually be found by normal phone users.
Examples: Unitys example list, cencor for iOS or Android. Its rather large..
Chipmunk physic engine: Look at the iOS section, thats not even a engine, but a tool to build a engine!
As for the RAM? Stupidity, or cost saving. Its cheaper to throw in more ram to avoid caching than to use fast NAND. Dualcore ARM is not that bad in contrast, it makes a lot of sense, but only if the power saving is working properly.

Yeah let's play games on our phones on a tiny screen when I could do it on an actual TV and on a console. Waste of money...people who buy them for that kind of stuff, stuff like gaming, hd, lots of ram and so on only do it just to be like everybody else and have the newest toy. Waste of time and money.

Or you are implying there is a lot of people who can stand being bored on short momens. Its also a reason why they sell, even a little. A lot of people. Then again, even more people follow the trend of those people, and the trend of the trend followers create the real demand.
But at the least the devices work properly, unlike the pre iPhone smartphones.

Its not about "Why?", but "Why not?".
Actually, a HD screen is not bad. Most, if not all, things look sharp on the screen. Makes it usefull for messaging, reading on screen things.
It creates a more "Ohh, its shiny and sharp" feeling, so here is your market reason.
Extra ram makes the phone more responsive when you are multi tasking with it. GPS can be useful, music player can be useful and so on.
A smartphone is a "jack of all trades, master of none" thing.
It cant do the job a digital camera, but provides one if you need it.
It cant replace a PC, but does provide some of its capabilities, and so on.
But you are overly right. Buying a phone because it has this and that or can play games is dumb, its plain luxury. This goes especially if you wont use all of its features, which is the most common case of customer. But then, find me a pratical reason why I would two cameras on a phone...
These are just gimmicks.
Edit:
I advise everybody to watch this video series on youtube. Its a 5 part series talking about android and iOS
Its informative

Just got my Razr upgraded from 2.0 to 4.0.
So... shiny. I don't get why I'm excited over these tiny differences.
Overall operation feels quicker, but the new lock-screen is hardly an improvement from Razr's old one.
