Etherlords on hardest (impossible) difficulty.
Still think, that the game is quite cool (and better than DoC, sadly).
In fact the game can be quite irritating even on very hard level, when the special unit abilities of the enemy trigger 9 out of ten times, but on impossible, for me it's been really that.

IWBTG isn't really hard... it's more of a memory game with terrible controls.

I remember Devil May Cry 3 being unbelievably frustrating for me on the higher difficulties.
I mean sure, you can survive pretty well and beat the game, but can you do it stylishly?
First thing that comes to mind.
EDIT:
**** yeah btw

I think that the game has a twin brother called Ghosts and Ghouls.
Yeah, the game is just impossible to beat. Prolly just like most of the old games.

Quote: Anyone play Theme Hospital? That game got crazy hard.
Oh boy, that one was so much fun! I think I still have the CD somewhere. I wonder if it'll run on Win7...?
Quote: 3rd: MTG - Prolly coz of the complex rulings that I don't want to read. But I can manage, I think.
You want to see how crazy it gets, take a judge practice exam. And on the day I took my L1 judge exam, I was being bombarded with all sorts of rules riddles. I even got one right

When you die in the first area for the fourth time because of one stupidly OP enemy while you're about lvl 2, you sort of get discouraged.

ADOM is actually one of easier roguelikes. If you are experienced or spoiled enough, you only need to make a few strategic (long term) decisions and you steamroll everything. I currently have 39PV as a druid pre-Air Temple and few monsters can even scratch me. Some quick tips:
- Shields are overpowered. Use them. Take ones with high DV over high PV, because shield's DV is the limit for training of Shield skill. A shield with DV of 10 actually gives you up to +30 DV (+30 at skill 10)
- polearms are overpowered, and best weapon in the game is a polearm (guaranteed if you can conquer it). The DV bonus from Shields skill is very useful. Don't bother with 2-handed weapons unless you want a challenge.
- train some ranged weapon skills. Slaying ammunition is VERY powerful and should be kept for hardest monsters.
- search the room with Nonnak the Master Necromancer to find elemental gauntlets, an artifact with multiple resists
- use herbs (learn about Conway's Game of Life). Morgia root (eat) and moss of marellion (use) permanently raise your stats up to 25. Pepper petal heals when eaten, spenseweed does the same thing when used.
- many corpses provide permanent benefits. Ogre, giant, ettin etc corpses have a good chance to permanently increase STR. Spellcaster corpses can increase Mana. Fire beetle, lizard etc grant fire resistance. Spider corpses - poison res, ants - acid res, giant slug acid IMMUNITY, and so on. Karmic lizards make you permanently more lucky.
- you need 4 sources of fire resistance for Tower of Eternal flames, practically the hardest part of the game. Also blessed fireproof blankets, equipment made of crystal or metal better than iron or silver. Ring of ice will do.
- cooked lizards bought near arena and/or not cursed stomafillia herbs will solve your food problems.
- Alertness, Find Weakness, Concentration are the best skills. You can't wish for Alertness.
- Trolls, barbarians, beastfighters and similar make BAD beginner races and classes because they desensitize you. You become unable to play more fragile classes and can't recognize danger until it gets you.
Basically ADOM is in many parts deadly if you don't know what's coming, and trivial past early game if you know the game. Now Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup is designed to have challenging decisions at all stages of the game.
------------------
Lesbian Spider Queens of Mars is a very hard arcade game. It's a retro-styled shooter. Safe for work as long as you don't play it outside of your lunch break.

Spelunky is a 2D platformer with randomly generated levels, inspired by roguelikes. It has permanent death, but can be finished in under 10 minutes if you're good. Highly replayable. You have 4 HP and it can be increased by saving blondes in red dress, but some things can kill you instantly.
http://www.spelunkyworld.com/original.html
It's only partially an action game. Playing carefully and planning is very important. For example look down before you jump, save your bombs and ropes for difficult areas.

The farthest I ever got in ADOM was that Chaos Serpent thing I think. Was playing a Human Elementalist and was killed because I got a little bit too cocky (which roguelikes in general tend to punish).
