Any particular reason why liches were nixed for Heroes IV? Was it because having the ability to raise vampires and liches in IV would have made Death too powerful?

All I know for sure is that life is the worst. All of their units are way too slow, and not that great at fighting either.
With equilibris however, (who doesn't play that who still plays heroes four) they are considerably better. All of their slow walkers had a nice speed boost, the ballistas movement was doubled so it can now be considered outside a small map, both tier 3 monks and crusaders got a nice buff, the stables goes for two weeks, life magic is a little better, and tactics and ressuresction skills that life heavily relies on are stronger. Nothing but sorely needed good news for life in equilibris.

I think life is pretty strong in equilibris, I would probably just put them below death and order. I don't remember monks receiving any buffs, but they might have a lil bit exagerated with the crusaders
liches are heroes in H4

Ah maybe your right the monks didn't receive a buff (I could have sworn they were given +10 HP). Anyways from h4 to equilibris life went from a weak faction riddled with glaring weaknesses to a capable and competitive one.

nah, crusaders received +10 HPs and also +1 to growth. that's probably the biggest buff life received. statistically, that probably almost put them on the level of goblin knights (except for speed).

The best town would be Might : they have very strong units,and an insanely large production.The only way they can be beaten is by using clever tactics :
a.) either you attack them early in the game before they have a chance of gathering cyclops or to construct the "breeding pens" ;
b.) either you wait for the big army to move away from the town,take over it,and wait there until they return (archers who stay on towers are much more efficient) ;
c.) either you attack the whole army by using magic and extreme carefulness (you need every bit of advantage here).And you must have some good ranged units or magical one.
Death is also a very good faction,but only in the long term.Once they have Grandmaster Necromancy,more then 100 bats and vampiric touch,they are almost unstoppable.
The same goes for Nature if they use "water elements" and grandmaster summoning.Another thing I like about them is they have a creature portal and some very strong magic,which makes them a frustrating opponent.
Life,Chaos and Order are the weaker factions.

might? maybe if they have good casters in their army. order in particular is might worst nightmare. those legions of cyclops could very well turn against their own army.
actually in early game they may dominate, their hero and starting units are better than anything you can have in any other castle (especially berserkers)

Yes but Might has "Breeding pets" which increase their production by 50 %.And if they bought a hero with basic nobility in the early game,that would mean 60 % more creatures (if he does nothing).
It's true what you say about Order but hypnosis is a level 5 magic spell,so it will take a long time to reach it.And even if they use "forgetfulness" on cyclops,they still have to worry about the Thunderbird.Also any magic can be removed by the "exorcism" spell,which is not hard to obtain.
Another thing to mention is that "genies" and "mage" never improve their attack skill.Since they use magic as a weapon,it doesn't matter if they have Basic offence or grandmaster offence,because the damage will be the same.The only thing that will make a difference here is the Nobility skill.
Thunderbirds and Bebemoths are the strongest level five units available,only second by the black dragon.So if u get hit by one of these,there is a good chance you will loose the battle.
Personally id choose the Thunderbird because of it's flying ability and high speed.

The thing about Order and Chaos is that they have some of the most powerful spells in the game. Order has (Mass) Slow, (Mass) Forgetfulness, Town Portal, Teleport, Hypnotize and a lot of ranged/spellcasting units. An Order mage with Town Portal and Grandmaster Combat/Resistance is easily one of the most dangerous units in late game, capable of taking down an entire legion of enemy units all by him/herself or using strike-and-teleport/ambush tactics to slowly destroy the enemy army while protecting his/her town.
The most dangerous thing about Chaos is that as far as early/mid game goes as long as they get the right nukes (Magic Missile, Firebolt, Cat's Reflexes) their Sorcerers are pretty much unstoppable. A sorcerer with Firebolt/Lightning is easily the most dangerous early/mid game unit, and you can hire an additional one once per week. No one can defeat Chaos early game, no hero unit in the game can survive getting pummeled by Magic Missiles/Fire bolt early on and there's nothing to prevent a Sorcerer from getting and maxing the Combat skill early so that on top of hitting like several dozen tier 2-3 units they're now also incredibly hard to kill. Chaos also have Medusas, which have a chance of killing off your hero if he/she somehow manages to survive. You can gimp your Combat skill intentionally by maxing Resistance before anything else but that has consequences.

behemoths aren't that big a threat, even with breeding pits and nobility. they have pretty bad mobility for a tier 4, no special ability, no magic resistance. it's not hard to ensure they never reach you.

They may need not ever cross the map, if I was to go behemoth then then the rest of my army would consist of cyclopes, two barbarians invested in archery, strike and returning harpies, forcing you to come to me...straight into the claws of you know what

That's not true.They have an ability called "giant strengh" or something like that.It's a picture with a muscle and they do enormous damage if you have many of them.
I once attacked them with 16 devils and vampiric touch,and if I didn't had lots of vampires I would have lost the combat.
The only weakness they have is the slow speed...so if you have good archers/magical units and mass slow,you can defeat them with relative ease.

devils beat behemoths. summon ice demons, attack behemoth with them, then make devil strike with no retaliation, and make them flee immediately after. still pretty hard if the demons don't freeze them.
it also depends on the number of behemoths. at equal numbers they are less strong, but when you play, you usually fight bigger armies than yours. then you obviously need the back-up of heroes.

Do not be offended. I am always saying that active online players should be more respected in such things than theorists who in the comfort of their homes crash computer hundreds times.
Well, how should I put it. I used to be a quite decent online player like what 10 yrs ago.

Well they did became a hero class (death + chaos). Although I love the liches as creatures I think they are better as a hero class. They could've made something like Order having mage heroes and creatures for the liches but I'm guessing balancing didn't allow that.
It's one of the many things that could've been added, balanced and polished if they weren't short on time and/or resources.

Actually it does. You never forget the basics. Not in chess... and not in h4. And I'm a chessmaster too.

Look, you sound like a troll to be honest. At best.

You're making a fool of yourself.

Regardless of your playing skills.
... and yea about the chess example. Very bad indeed. Anyone who's ever been a chessmaster learns a certain patternf of thinking that's not forgotten. Even just any players with a FIDE-Elo do and much better at commenting any sort of chess game than amateurs cause theys know about 100 times better what's going on.
