I explained what you have to do a few posts ago: Online Multiplayer -> PBEM -> Find games; find the game, type in the password, and pick your class and so on (no necro, though)...

Look, PBEM is something you can 10 games run at the same time. PlAY BY E-MAIL. Of course it takes time. But you don't usually wait for a turn. You check in your own time.

Nah, count me out. There's no way I can enjoy something like that. If I'm in the mood for AoW3 I'm not gonna wait for potentially days to get my turn. And I surely ain't gonna check the game nor my e-mail to have to play just one turn because one player checks in tomorrow. That's not even casual gaming, it's something more on the lines of a chore. You might have a different opinion but I see little point in such a game. Sorry.

Haven't played this series before, but with 70 % discount on Steam, I reckon this is a safer place to put my money than HoMaM7 will ever be, so now I'll give it a try. Are the expansions essential or can they wait til I get to know if I like the game?

I think you can get the full game for free but play it as a guest. That's what I did and it convinced me. It was a while back so I don't know if the download link from the official page is still available. Then I acquired the complete edition for 25€ and I have no regrets. If you'll buy the game without the DLC I believe you'd be missing out on really great content, but if you wanna play safe then just get the base game and give it a spin.

Do the expansions add major gameplay elements that are not in the base game, or are they mostly just extra factions to play?

Just got the complete package on Steam as is currently 50% off and started campaign to get familiar with the mechanics, enjoying it so far, looks like some kind of civ/homm hybrid.

There is no complete edition on my Steam - I don't know if that is a regional difference. Main game was 70 % off, expansions are available at 40 % off.

Just buy the two expansions Golden Realms and Eternal Lords. You can't really go wrong with them.
Best game ever.

ha, sorry guys, normally i would have been able to play all night, just had family over. fridays are generally my game day.
most of the time im probably good for a time intensive turn or a couple quick turns in the morn, again in the afternoon, then more in the evenings; weekdays usually being much better for me. although there may be days when i dont get to game at all. im est atm by the way.
i like to play pbem games methodically; and speed run sonic and metroid when i wanna go fast.
im down for a smaller map too.
@alcibiades: the expansions are essential.
i think rogue just became my new favorite class...
