I voted for RoE.
Conflux is boring concept-wise and silly in some places (Energy elementals ? Magma elementals ? Storm elementals ? What is an element, anyway ?). It also has the worst balance of all towns. They just put little thought into the town after getting their feelings hurt by rejection of Forge. Only music of Conflux is nice.
Expansions fit less than perfectly. Hero portraits look like they stepped out of some anime and are out of place. Units look rather plastic. I'm not thrilled about new colors of dragons, they're too similar. Not everything has to be a dragon or an elf subrace. Why add new, unoriginal creatures if there are still creatures which have never appeared in HOMM ? How about a werewolf ?
Technically, Shadow of Death had even more stuff. But somehow I can't remember any of the new features, I guess they didn't impress me. I was more impressed by Heroes IV, as flawed as it was.

Don't forget SoD editor bonuses, mapmaking was really tedious with RoE.
No way to ban heroes, spells, skills, artefacts, maps were impossible to balance. If game survived, is because of SoD.

Exactly. For example because of exclusive content in RoE which are removed from later releases (AB, SoD, Complete and so on). Only RoE contains high quality (Bink) compaign videos, Myth and Legend game map. No trench damage. No Conflux. No combo artifacts causing crashes. And because RoE is the first and only original release of HoMM 3 (February 16, 1999).

Let's see:
Quote: Only RoE contains high quality (Bink) compaign videos
And poor campaigns full of bugs and unfinished passability. The fun stops after watching video.
Quote: Myth and Legend game map.
Can be downloaded and full compatible with SoD/AB
Quote: No trench damage.
What's wrong with trench damage?
Quote: No Conflux.
A new town can never be a bad thing. Some like it, others don't, what's the deal, you select it or not.
Quote: No combo artifacts causing crashes.
You can't even place them, editor is clearly unfinished. Never heard of combo crashes in sod.

What? It is cleanly a lie. RoE campaigns are broken (and impassable) in SoD and Complete releases. But not in RoE.

I played them in SoD, true. So you say they had a perfect campaign in RoE but they used a broken one for SoD? This makes not much sense to me, why would they do that?

These campaigns are quite easy, yes. But not broken. I don't know why them get corrupted in later releases... But I has completed all 7 in RoE in early 1999. Definitely.

They can be completed but there are several areas not accessible due to some passability unfinished detail. Also all spells are available, if you are lucky and get the travel spells early, the further episodes are broken. At least in SoD campaign they took care of (except Gelu where they forgot dim door in first scenario)

Voted for SoD.
When HotA release English version, I'll probably change my vote, their work looks very professional, without crazy changes on the game mechanics.

I like RoE because it's consistent and fits well together. Later expansions, less so. I appreciate things like random map generator and map editor improvements. I wasn't making maps so they don't stand out well in my memory. I perceive AB and SoD mostly as mission packs. I couldn't identify with any of the AB heroes, for my taste the campaigns were too much about single characters, and even too much about story. Jon Van Caneghem made a similar observation in an interview about (non-Ubisoft) Heroes V: the games became too much (for his taste) about story and he wanted to bring it back to strategy field.
I don't know who made AB and SoD, but I suspect it was another company. Price of Loyalty for H2 was made by a different company and it was a less than stellar expansion, especially ghosts. You can raise the price to 1500 per one, or even 10000 but it still won't make them balanced. It's futile. But I liked the extra scenario, except for the HIII-ish "every town starts with at least one gold mine". PoL also added Orb of Inhibition.
Speaking of things like trench damage, it might help to make them more relevant, but mostly in early game and that's when turrets shined already. It doesn't change the fundamental facts that turret power is not proportional to garrison size, and that armies continue to grow to huge sizes but cities stop. I like Age of Wonders system more, you can have multiple identical units in the same army but are limited by army upkeep. This makes balancing of damage spells, turrets, easier.
I don't recall any broken scenarios in RoE. If you want to see broken scenarios, play Heroes1. Technically they all work, but passability bugs are numerous and laughable. You stumble upon them casually without even trying.

A lot of RoE fans dislike trench damage, I never played like that as far as I remember. Maybe it can be written in ERM as an Era mod, possible? If it is, it must be only a few lines of code.
I've never seen combo artifacts cause a crash either. Besides you can disable them in Wog. But if you even dislike SoD because of RoE purism Wog must be some kind of abomination to you.

There is an option in wog which allows turrets damage to grow exponentially according to garrisons growth. Overall, wog can fix anything for all tastes and in same time ignore all changes not desired.

Stop using the word you don't understand They grow linearly.
Quote: Arrow towers now can train and collect experience in fights. If the player keeps control of a town for one week, the arrow towers on day 1 will receive additional experience and are amplified according to the following formula:
No Bonus
100% damage
After 1 week
200% damage
After 2 weeks
300% damage
After 3 weeks
400% damage
After 4 weeks
500% damage
and so on...
If a town successfully defends against a siege, it gets better as though one week had passed. If a town is captured, all saved up experience for towers is lost.
The central shooting tower receives experience irrespective of the lower towers. The lower arrow towers receive experience simultaneously since they were both built at the same time.

From the rules you quoted, linearly is also wrongly used, seeing that there are many factors changing the damage.

SoD (well, Complete, but yeah). Map editor is the most important tool, and is what kept HOMMIII alive more than anything. That does much more good than it does harm.

Ironic thing to say, because the RoE campaigns were absurdly easy, to the point of having little strategy at all. You can go through them with minimal effort. So the AB/SoD campaigns were MORE about strategy if you ask me.

Like everything else in WoG, it's an option and any two WoG players have three opinions on what settings to use. Too much freedom can be bad. WoG is extremely inconsistent and fragmented.
DooM suffered from similar fate. After the source code has been released, almost no source ports can play the original gameplay videos (demonstration) which starts in the main menu. It's even rarer to be able to record a demo in one source port and play it in another.
Default settings are powerful. By default, applications in Windows run on Administrator account. The result is security nightmare. In theory it would be nice and secure to have them work on regular user account, but it's virtually impossible because so many apps require administrator privileges. They changed this in Vista to be more unix-like, and the users had to be dragged there kicking and screaming.
--------------------
RoE campaigns fall into two categories:
- gather a (big enough) force and squash your enemies
- the enemy has more castles than you, so attack as soon as possible
Rerember these two approaches and you can beat the whole game.

I see there is still big misunderstanding on what wog really is. You complain that turrets have fixed damage and this does not suit armies growth. I tell you that you can play (using wog) not modified SoD but having the turrets fixed at your taste. Your reaction is "wog is not consistent because two players can't agree on options to use".
What apples have to do with oranges?
ERM commands give you access to internal tables of information in the Heroes 3 program and several commands can change data at a specific address in Heroes 3 memory. This is wog, access to Heroes code.
