Let's be honest here...
...that the games from 10-20 years ago are the best games there could ever be. The simple, yet likable graphics, the story, the gameplay, size... Everything was good. Now, with the new 3D games, the only thing the game developers focus on are the almost realistic graphics. The story is put aside, the relation between the player and the game has become strict, and the games become a chore rather than entertainment.
Personally, I think that games like Warcraft 3, Age of Empires 2, Shining Force 1 and 2, etc... are a lot better than, let's say, Skyrim, Assassins Creed 3, and, well, every other fancy graphics-which-require-a-supercomputer-to-run-perfectly game.
Minecraft has won so many people over because of it's simplistic graphics and the simulation of almost real life. However, Heroes 6 has disgraced the HoMM series. I haven't played it, but I've watched some videos and read the reviews. It's buggy, the game focuses on graphics and eye candies; the story was taken IIRC from the Song of Ice and Fire.
Yet, even after more than ten years, HoMM3 is still played by a large number of people.
Think about it.

Well,i think to you are right.I think to after 2012 games start being stupid.I mean no more great games.
Anyway Heroes 3 are best.

Bioshock
To name a few absolutely great recent games that look great while also having amazing gameplay and story.
Hey guess what? They were focusing on graphics back then as well, those games you mention looked absolutely incredible back then.
I think you're wrong. Tastes differ as always, but game quality has overall increased over time. Sure there were classics released, but also A LOT more crap earlier.

Mass Effect 3 was 1 year ago.
Witcher 2 was 2 years ago.
Dishonored last year
Bioshock Infinite was released just a few months ago.
If it's simple graphics and good stories you're looking for, there are hundred upon hundreds of indie gaming projects that have very artistic concepts, like The Cat Lady or To The Moon, amazing stuff.

Sorry that I'm someone who thinks "Good Graphics (does not equal sign) Bad Game", it's a pretty hard pill to swallow but most companies can actually make both good graphics and a good game.

There are plenty of good games today. I will say this, however, I don't think I've seen a good quest game like Monkey Island, Gobliiins, Legends of Kyrandia in a long time.

Poor Nooby is once again being misinformed. Ah those young whippersnappers, so easy to judge. Back in the good old days everything was good? Heh. Heheh. You are forgetting much or never had the chance to try enough games. Actually it was back in the day where it was more likely for a game to be a chore than today. If we exclude MMO  There are plenty of awesome games today but sadly not as many 2D games - that I know of. 3D is not the problem, it's all about implementation and gameplay. Of course genre plays a great role too. For instance it's not easy to make an rpg that surpasses planescape torment or baldur's gate 2 and yet more of that will happen in the coming years. Project infinity, planescape 2! Even new amazing types of games have surfaced like Fahrenheit and heavy rain.
In any case each era is different. Back then they had to make do with less and generally had better atmosphere to compensate, today they have incredible capabilities(see battlefield 3, deus ex machina, AC3) more but have more bureocracy and a market that is not easy to satisfy. A lot more piracy too I'd bet. But let's not forget, if you think games are crappy today there are tons of crappy games from the old times that you are turning a blind eye to.

Same stuff happens with music, only because all the crappy titles/songs are forgotten while the great ones last to tell the tale of a great era of splendid art.

Say what you want, but you're not gonna change my opinion.
However, I must agree that there were some bad games released back then.

I remember when my dad found some old pinball game. It was so addicting and fun, yet challenging at the same time. Whenever my uncle would come to visit, we would organise a tournament and compete with eachother. Surely you can't do this with Bioshock or Amnesia.

You can't do that with Bioshock or Amnesia because those are single-player, story-driven games... You can do it with any FPS or sports game or any of the tons of indies out there... Or Wii games like Elvin said...

i pretty much cycle through the game franchises i grew up with, but that doesn't mean i don't enjoy new games.
I have played assassin's creed 1 and 2, and am currently playing the entire mass effect trilogy (i found all three game for just €20 so lucky <3333) and i am really enjoying them.

I'd say the general trend in strategy/rpg games now is dumbing down. While Mass Effect 3 is a good game, it was dumbed down from ME2, which was dumbed down from ME. Dragon Age 2 was dumbed down from DA AND the same dungeon and house were used over and over, with just different blockades/locked doors. Diablo3, a shadow of Diablo 2. HOMM6, dumbed down.
I agree that game-play is often sacrificed for graphics and cinematics. The cinematics are quite expensive to make. Throw in known voice actors and a company is blowing a big part of the game budget just on that.
I personally rather have more skills/spells/buildings/creatures, ect, than cinematics and voice acting for every line of text.
