a dark little exercise

(disclaimer: this is purely an exercise of the mind, and not any "bloody mary" crap, or any kind of witchcraft, for any ultra-religious types)

this exercise will require patience on your part(as long as it takes, hours, if need be). it will also require a mirror big enough to see your whole face(body sized is better. if you can see the chair or the floor you sit on, the best), a DARK room(no light except a dim light source, be it a cracked door with light outside, or a small candle placed far enough away from the mirror), no breezes, either. if you have a fan, turn it off. pets, put out of the room. an absence of almost all noise or sound, solitude, and a clear, focused mind.

for obvious reasons, this works better at night.

if you cannot have ALL of those requirements, don't bother reading any further.

if you wish to do this, write the instructions down first, then turn off your computer. make sure all electrical appliances are turned off, and unplugged, in the room you wish to do this in. the reason why is the hum of electricity. you want a very, very quiet room. if you can hear your breath, and it is the loudest thing in the room, then you are good.

now then. if you feel more comfortable in a chair, use a chair. a bed, use a bed(but sit up, lying down will not work). or the floor. as long as you are comfortable, and do not need to fidget(you want to be absolutely STILL for this exercise). place the mirror close to where you sit, so that it is directly across from you, and not at an angle. if you need to, place a chair in front of a non-movable mirror. place your light source(a candle that will stay lit a long time, with no breezes to make it flutter. you want a steady, unmoving light) so that it lights your face from slightly below your nose, but any angle will work really, as long as you can see the reflection of the dim light in both of your pupils(you need to be close enough to the mirror that you can see your pupils, about a foot and a half, or closer. you won't want to be TOO close, at least, not yet).

make sure the temperature in the room is not going to distract you. if you need to undress to feel comfortable, do so. if you need to throw on more clothes, do so. just make sure that you won't have anything coming up to distract you from the task at hand(it would be a good idea to do this when you aren't hungry at all, and make sure you go to the bathroom before hand). you don't want ANY interruptions. whatever you have to do to make that so, do it.

now, if everything is perfect, let's get down to it.

1. sit in the chair. it is important that you are very still.

2. look in the mirror. if the light is right, you will only see a dim reflection of yourself, and you will be able to make out your pupils, reflecting the light source. IT IS IMPORTANT TO SEE YOUR PUPILS REFLECTING LIGHT.

3. stare at your eyes, keeping your focus on the light in your black pupils. try to focus on just one eye, but if you can't, both will work, it will just take longer.

4. keep staring. your peripheral vision should blur every once in a while, when your eyes or your focus jerks. you will of course blink, but it is important to just blink, and not keep your eyes shut for more than a second or so.

5. keep staring. you will notice something about your face. i will not say what, because i want to hear about what YOU saw, and not me. when you start not recognizing your own face, you are getting there.

6. keep staring. if it takes hours, so be it. it shouldn't, though. with the right environment, and the settings i have described, it doesn't take long at all, maybe 30 minutes or so. but, even if you are at 30 minutes, and are not recognizing your reflection, you need to keep at it. keep the focus on the pupils. focus on the black. try to see into the black of your pupils(sounds strange, or stupid, but trust me).

7. your face will start to leave phantom images, when you move your view from pupil to pupil, if you are using both. once you start seeing the phantom image of your face, you can look from pupil to pupil, if you haven't already. but try to focus on just one.

8. NOW, look at that person in the mirror. is that you? or someone else? keep staring. what are their intentions? what do they want? imagine, that you aren't looking at a mirror anymore, but what you see in the mirror is watching YOU, and YOU are the reflection. now, what do you see? study what you see. observe what you see, like you would observe a colony of ants building an anthill. try to keep emotions out of your thinking. they will come, but gently push them away. do not force anything. let your mind drift in what you are seeing in the mirror.

9. keep staring. once you have "discovered" something about yourself substantial, take time to think about it, while staring at your pupils. you can look for as long as you like, as long as you look long enough that you are seeing something you didn't see before, or are discovering something that you didn't know was there.

10. now, relax. shut your eyes. don't move, or get up to do anything. think about what you saw. you can let your emotions come back now. but don't let them overwhelm you. now, open your eyes again, and look in the mirror, again at your pupils, and at your face. do you see what you have seen every time up until this exercise? or do you see something different, that you have discovered, now made more obvious because of this little exercise?

and that's it. if you have done the exercise(and done it as instructed), report what you have seen here. if you feel it is too embarassing or strange to share with the group here, you can hcm me, i will keep it between us.

i did this years ago, and i have my own results, but i want to hear your results.

questions:

1. how long did you sit before you saw anything?

2. were the pre-conditions optimal?

3. what did you see?

4. what did you feel: before, during, and after?

5. does whatever effect you had on yourself last long? and, how long?

as far as summoning goes, drakon, i think this falls under "summoning" self-awareness, so no worries. give it a try. like i said, it's not occult, or anything even remotely related to "bloody mary" foolishness.

Ah, the beginning of meditation... what a wonderful thread - and extremely well-written OP.
Having performed similar practices every day for many years now, I will report back after others have had a chance to try the experiment, so as not to taint their experiences.

Correct me if I am wrong, but aren't eyes to be closed in order you to be able to meditate?

i realize that i first did this 13 years ago, when i was living with my dad. now, when i look in the mirror, i see both myself, and what i saw after my exercise. the initial exercise was accidental, what happened wasn't even planned. i was just bored, walking room to room, and i went into the bathroom, closed the door to a crack, and looked in the mirror. i remember looking weird, so i kept looking. the more i looked, the more i noticed something different. so, i stood there, with my hands on the sink for balance, to keep from moving, and just stared.

the light from the crack was enough to illuminate my face slightly, but my pupils picked up the light good. they were the only thing in my eyes that reflected the light, the light seemed caught in there, somehow(don't laugh, i know it sounds wacky, but that's how i thought of it at the time). so, i kept watching, trying not to blink. my face started leaving negative images from staring so long. i think i looked for an hour or so, i didn't pay attention to the time.

i did the same thing maybe once after that, with the descriptions in the first post. it worked better then, and i have been thinking about it lately, so i figured, why not see if anyone else has done it? if not, let them give it a try, and see what they find?

sad that the exercise i want others to try isn't really being taken seriously(not that it's that serious, but this isn't a junk thread, or spam, either). oh well.

Took me 8 minutes to regret doing this. At first nothing happened, but after like 6 minutes I started seeing strange shapes in the mirror. 2 minutes later I saw a deformed face staring at me I didn't dare stare longer...

noobx, you're supposed to keep looking. the "deformed face" you are talking about is the negative image your brain is superimposing on your face in the mirror, because your eyes will move, even though you don't know it. you have to get past that. fear or disgust will pass. keep at it. (the last time i did it, when i was sitting in a chair, i think i looked for 2 or more hours. i just drifted off, wandering into myself. kind of like floating through my thoughts, and aware of it at the same time. it was peaceful, and when i came back from it, was very clear-headed. i felt like i had been put back in order(maybe i was "shuffled" before). it had a very introspective effect on me. don't back down from it, noobx. you never know what you might learn.)

and elvin, if the tavern is a more proper place for this thread, then i say ok. and thanks.
