Top 3 and Drop 3 and 3 Optional Towns of your choice!
Since we have 9 town in total in HOMM III Complete or with expansions. What are your Top 3 and Drop 3 (2 if you don't have expansion) towns of choice and reason for liking and disliking it!  Also what specify map sizes you play them on!
Here' my list:
Top 3 Towns
1. Tower - Since HOMM II, I always liked playing wizards just because of the shooters. It forces your troop to get close for an attack and I like them mutilated by my nagas and crushed by my golems. Genies are really effective for eliminating lower level creatures! Titans owns everyone, always pimpin ever since! Master Gremlins and Archmages are just excellent shooters. I use them mainly on XL and Large maps (4-8 Players)!
2. Inferno (My Weakness) - I don't really like them before but, one thing I find when my opponent are inferno. I am having a hard time to eliminate them (It's probably just me). So I started using them recently and just great combos of creatures. Pit Lords will hurt your asses really bad. ArchDevils are just excellent dragon slayer and fast too. Magogs are great for 1 or more stacks, just use them wisely. Cerberi's are just as deadly like a hydra when you have teleport or hast. Great for big combats! Imps are good decoys. Efreet Sultans just rules in the First 3 weeks! I use them mainly on Large maps (3-5 Players)!
3. Dungeon - I use them when I get bored on Large or XL maps. I usually play them when my opponents are Might towns such as Fortress and Strongholds. Black Dragons are really overwhelming, Scorpicore are OK. Minautor just like the Mighty Cows (Cows are better though) are excellent Level 7 up slayers. Beholders and Medusa's are great backup shooters and again Trogs for Decoys!
My Drop 3 Towns:
1. Necropolis - I just feel odd playing undead troops. I never did like them from the start. I just don't!
2. Castle - Boring, boring, just boring town but not the AA's of course!
3. Rampart - I used to like before but grand elves are just too weak and just a favorite target by opponents. I get pissed when my elves are mass slauthered!
My 3 Optional Towns to Play:
1. Fortress - Mighty Gorgons just rules you! Just excellent might town. I use them on Medium and Small maps for quick slaughter. Players online plays them almost always! Excellent Defense stats for both Hero's and Creatures!
2. Stronghold - I use them for Medium and Small maps too... Behemoths are just scary! Fast building town and excellent attack stats for both hero and creatures. Just gr8! 
3. Conflux - Overwhelming number of troops, cheap builds and great creatures. One of the top favorites in playing HOMM online. Phoenix compinsates for it's numbers and I think the most powerfull town in the game (IMHO). Good to use online and in any map size!
Although I only play online sometimes, Most of my opponents play either othe the three optional towns. I play Fortress though! But when I first played online my first town was Tower which isn't really a good choice  and from what I observered from members here and players online. They are more in favor of the three optional towns I listed to use on both online and hotseat although the playing the game is playing for your own comfort at least in my oppinion. Which ever you are comfortable playing you go for it.

1 fortress
i'm a armor,def freak so +i really like the hydra
i mostly use them if i want to play with might
2 dungeon
when i want to play as magic i chose this one of inferno
and chose the hero with the sorcery ability
3 inferno
same as dungeon
DROP 3
necropolis
i like them for small maps but their end units just don't cut it and i get bored with them in midgame
all the others it depends

*Note: none of the followings are in any particular order. Except for Stronghold
Top 3:
1)Stronghold- best town (IMHO). Some cool advantages - Behemots fay 2/3 (depends on what you have), Realy cool spec on Behemots too. The ultimate siege weapon - cyclop. One if the best tank units (again, IMHO) - Ogre, who, when upgraded, can beat some lvl 5 units too. Great heroes too  . Map sizes? Any!!!
2)Tower- The best magic town (library). One of the worst towns to siege one (once agi9n, IMHO) (when all levels upgraded are inside) those shooter... Huge adavantage for beginning - M. Gremlins.
3)Rampart - Grand Elves rule! Plus great spec on Unicorns. One of the fastest towns (except for Dwarfs & Dendro's).
Drop 3:
1)Necropolis- I don't like them... I only adore V. Lords & Dread Knights.
2)Fortress- don't ask why! I just don't!
3)Conflux- same as Fortress
Optional:
1)Castle- AA's... Marksmen, Crusaders. Nice town.
2)Inferno- AD's... Cerberis, sultans, Fiends. Nice town.
3)Dungeon- BD's... Scorpicores, Mino's, hags. Nice town.

DROP 3 (of course - those are strong towns - but no fun at all)

1a)Conflux (yep - it's only in certain HOMM versions)

1- inferno: i like demonology
2- fortress: i just like them
3- tower: because i like giants / titans
drop:
1- dungeon: somehow i can't get enough gold.
2- conflux: best town but too expensive and middle troops suck
3- necropolis: to me it's a chore to keep my skeletons alive
rest:
1- castle: i want cavaliers but they're too much wood
2- rampart: i got bored of them
3- stronghold: i want cyclopses but I can't get them without the more important behemoths.

This was a hard list to make, the only castle I really dislike is conflux. Strictly because it unbalances the game.

Ok heres my list
1. Tower, I'm just truely evil when I play as Tower. I build my Master Gremlins first, then mage guide, then nothing but creatures and money in the begining of the third week or even the middle of week one I'll attack.
2. Is Necropolis I just build my army and necromancy and then bamm A greater army.
3. Is..... Castle sure its a sometimes boring town but with the right heros and other creatures it would be hard to beat.
I ownly play as these towns besides conflux.

Gootchie!! Don't diss rampart!! War Unicorns are great (although those useless Pegasi should go jump off tower bridge), and grand elves are fantastic for a low level shooter, and dwarfs are solid, and the o/a magic resistance is fantastic esp. against tower... I'm not the best player in the world, but I can't see anything wrong with rampart!!

TOP: Tower, Rampart, Necropolis
LOW: Stronghold (yuck), Fortress (yuck), Dungeon (nice but just NOT my style)
AVE: COnflux (like it a lot but way too Strong), Inferno (if you ask David, however...), Castle.
I'm just such a sucker for magic. I love it. SH nd Fortres might be good towns but just not my kind of play. I generally don't like Dungeon, despite its strong creatures. My least fav creature are there like Harpy hags and minos. Ugly, ugly and ugly again. Just NOT my style.
Tower: 2 words: library and nagas *drools* I love nagalings!! THREE shooters, oh, my... just love these magic thingies.
Rampart: who said Unicorns are cute? Plain sexy! Ptyk-ptyk-ptyk! Slash! Blind. Elves are really overrated but they can do quite a good job. (I'd always go for enchanters, though). Reason is they die way too easily. One implosion and they all perish. :-(
Necropolis: I'm such a sucker for money too. Free troops are always welcome, esp. when they come in legions. :-)

Sorry Cat, but I've come to these conclusions after years of being in the trenches. It is my honest assessment that those who like the Rampart happen to think that it has the cutest creatures. Might you be in that group? I'm also guessing that those of you who like the Rampart also have seen, "The Last Unicorn" and thought it was a great movie.
Myself, I have no such disadvantages. I am objective as they come and all the smoke and mirrors that the Rampart has (like the most hit points of all the Castles) doesn't mean squat in a real battle. It is the Monet of the towns; looks good from far, but up close you begin to see all of its blurriness.

TOP 1
FORTRESS - well, I have said many times why I like it so much... And nothing can be compared to Fortress. Without it the atmosphere won't be the same in Heroes 4...
OTHER 2 THAT CAN BE ASSUMED TOP ALTHOUGH THEY AREN'T
Castle - I don't know why but I like it. I especially like building the Brotherhood of the Sword - such an important building!
Rampart - maybe. It gives you resources... and there is an interesting Chinese atmosphere in the town.
DROP 3
Necropolis - I actually started to feel sorry about this town - almost everyone places it in the Drop 3... but what can I do? I really don't like playing with it.
Dungeon - it doubles your spell points, gives you experience... but anyway, it's not my favourite town. I should say that I put it here only because there have to be 3 towns in the Drop 3...
Inferno - the same reasons as for Dungeon. However, I really like the Castle Gate.
OPTIONAL 3
Conflux - a strange town with interesting features.
Stronghold - not bad. But too much crystals needed...
Tower - many people tell me: "This is the best town! It's really expensive but is the best!" I don't want to play with a definite town because it's the best or something like that. I want a town which I enjoy playing with. Anyway, I think the Lookout Tower is an interesting building (although not as interesting as the Brotherhood of the Sword!!!).
Hmm... I think it's obvious that I only like Fortress...

It was a great movie!! It's one of my faves (and Legend)!! But don't be mean.. Rampart has a treasury, which means £££ and a level 7 flier, which is dead useful. Other bonuses are.. mystic pond and fountain of fortune (mystic pond has saved me on numerous occasions)
And I'm a girl, dammit!! I'm alowed sexy elves over minging imps if I want them!!
NB: I think it's more of a Lichtenstien:- Cartoony and cute on the outside, serious and dangerous on the inside...
