Thought a little about Salamandre's idea, so I decided to do a little experiment:
Daylight Romanian Town, I replaced the moon with a pale Sun hidden behind the clouds. Does it look better?

Yeah, I think it is. I love your progress with the buildings contrast dude. Especially the castle.

What about a more intrusive sun (with area):

Thanks! Even if vampires hate sunlight, it looks pretty impressive, I love it. Now I have to increase buildings' lightness a little more and add sunbeams/other effects over them( too bad heroes doesn't support layers with lower opacity)

No, put background, add buildings as layers, use lens flare filter on all (PS) then you have the right think on each.

yup, this'll work. but you should fix any visual errors first, though. using lens flare should be the very last step you do, unless you save backups of everything.

Another proposal: How about a night scenery? It fits with the undead units and makes the screen colorful in the same time:

Daylight version is better. The whole evil town concept should be transformed into evil hunter town anyway. Nobody in their right mind will play a town which mixes the living and the undead, it doesnt make sense, both in terms of game mechanics and storywise. Lizard insists on the vampires for they are huge part of Romanian folklore but really, who cares... Will you replace Necropolis with Romanian town if you wanna play with vampires, if not, will both town have vampires? All of these problems can easily be solved replacing them with vampire hunters (Van Helsing type of unit with a wooden stick). Otherwise it will be lots a work put into graphics for nothing because the truth is, if playibility has issues nobody cares about mythological consistency of Romania. Think of all the other towns, mixing creatures of Greek, Nordic, Persian, Celtic myythology. Does anybody care?

That lens flare hurts my eyes, though. It's too bright. A darker and gray setting seems fitting to the town to me. Early morning or night. Moonlight is more fitting than a bright sun. It makes a more mystic atmosphere, but you should still be able to see the town clearly enough, though.

Actually I was thinking about adding a (hidden) +1 morale bonus to Romanian undeads so the morale penalty will be nullified. Or making them just "unliving" without adding the "undead" ability.
artu said: Lizard insists on the vampires for they are huge part of Romanian folklore but really, who cares...Will you replace Necropolis with Romanian town if you wanna play with vampires, if not, will both town have vampires?
Most people associate Romania with vampires/undead and consider this is a must for a Romanian town. Also I didn't plan to use vampires for 2 towns, I was going to replace Necropolis 4th tier with a Mummy, think about it as a sort of re-balancing since Necropolis had too many powerful units (skeletons, liches, vampire lords, dread knights)
artu said: All of these problems can easily be solved replacing them with vampire hunters (Van Helsing type of unit with a wooden stick). Otherwise it will be lots a work put into graphics for nothing
That could work because in Romanian folklore are a lot of rituals and spells that banish evil spirits(moroi/strigoi) and it could be some kind of nemesis for Necropolis which is overpowered. As an anti-necropolis town the units should have abilities to counterattack the necro top units, especially the masses of skeletons.
As a line-up:
1. Wolves or replace them with reworked peasants (with decent stats)like this
2. maybe Iele or other nature spirits
3. Haiduci(shooters)
4. Some kind of priests (shooters, hate undead)
5. Varcolac->Pricolici (werewolves, maybe some kind of "scavenger" ability to deal more damage to skeletons)
6. Zgriptori (zgriptori hate serpents, I could give them a permanent Slayer spell and hatred for bone/ghost dragon)
7. Zmeu->Balaur

It is also possible to move the sun outside the screen and have indirect sun-rays. A sun in middle of screen hurts eyes indeed.

I could also save space for buildings if I move it out of the screen or I could place it on the far left and use it to make the Grail a little more special?

Dunno, you could try several patterns and show them. But in the end, is up to you to choose what you like, as you see is hard to make others agree on everything.
Both day and night towns are possible in romanian mythology, so finally the one looking best should be picked. Myself I would not go for a town without a lake or a river, because water animation is centering the view and create perspectives.
Not that I know how to animate water but shouldn't be hard to learn

I'd be nice to make 2 versions of it, but there's hell of a lot of work to do. I'll try it anyway

I could rip off Fortress' lake and change its contrast/brightness, IMO sun/moon's reflection in the lake would be a nice eye candy.

Grove has an interesting architecture with an intimate moon just over the middle of water branches. When you have waterfalls taking half of the screen, adding buildings is easy. Now that you can install grove mod in one click, you can easily look at and get some ideas.
