One must hope people are proud of what they do, otherwise it reflects some kind of internal or external disagreement with ones values.
Peoples priorities changes as they gain more information, and some stuff we did in our past, we're not proud of. Some stuff we do today we might not be proud of in the future. But in the present moment we're hopefully proud of what we decide to do.

JoonasTo said: I'm trying to make you realize that what you wrote in your first post can be applied to anyone dedicated to something.
We would have two questions on the table there.
1- Is there a difference between dedication and obsession or do we simply call it dedication when it works for us or when it's socially accepted as something useful. I dont thihk DF sees what he's talking about as dedication, he rather thinks of it as falling in love with your own cage. Don't get me wrong, I think it is a fair objection to ask which is which, when and why, according to who? That brings us to the second question.
2- Is there a qualitative difference between dedications depending on what you are dedicated to? Does content matter? A humanitarian dedicating himself to feed the poor, a collector dedicated to bringing together the richest stamp collection ever, a butler dedicated to serve the house perfectly... Are these, in the end, just the same? When I was a kid, my father used to say "it doesnt matter what you choose to do as long as you try to be the best at it, you can choose to be a janitor, that's fine as long as you try to be a really good janitor." Now, that sounds like a truly decent advice at first, but come to think of it, choosing the example of a janitor in such a context has a read-between-the lines EVEN to it, he didnt say, you can choose to be a lawyer, he picked the example of a janitor because we have a tendency to listen to it as "you can choose to be EVEN a janitor, as long as you take it seriously." And although I dont question the moral correctness of the advice, I wonder how would we actually react to a janitor who proudly keeps on telling us how good a janitor he is? I mean, I'm not talking about being a jerk or looking down on janitors but surely, if the guy was a friend that I could speak to honestly, at some point I might have said something like "easy dude, you're not going to get a Nobel Prize for the best janitor of the year." Add to this, the concept of alienation that has been pointed out so many times (especially by Marxists) when it comes to modern labour, wasting your life away on an automated set of tasks, the cubical prison, etc etc...
Old folk tale... A man comes to the Sultan, he says he can throw a needle from a 100 meters away and pass it through the hole of another needle. The Sultan naturally does not believe him, they set it up, he actually manages to do what he says. Sultan says "give this man a hundred bags of gold for pulling off such an incredible task but before that beat him with stick a hundred times for spending so many years on learning something so inconsequent."

1. What is "hard" work? What makes a work "hard" and what entitles people to decide whether work is hard or not?
maybe something that is physically tiring (sport doesn't count )
yeah, some people like to boast about how hard their work is. though, sometimes the people who pretend to work the most actually work the least.
2. Is hard work something to be proud of?
I don't think so, unless it requires some physical prowess maybe.
I see no reason to be proud of a time consuming work, especially in a time when unemployment is constantly rising. we should hope to work less, not more.
also, why would you be proud of a work that is so hard physically that it degrades your health? that would be stupid.

If you're skilled at the thing you do and can learn stuff quickly, no job will be to hard. In the past few years I've personally switchet about six or seven different jobs. A painter, solar panel installer, carpentry, operating heavy machinery, packaging all sorts of crap and other crap. If you can learn that is good. but if you fail at the simplest of tasks than you fail as a human being.

Quote: "it doesnt matter what you choose to do as long as you try to be the best at it, you can choose to be a janitor, that's fine as long as you try to be a really good janitor."
what you choose to do matters. now it seems that the worst thing you can do is doing nothing (not working seems generally considered the same as doing nothing. I doubt there are people who really do nothing at all) more exactly, it seems that not working is necessarily worse than working. for example, the military, which is a massive waste (some people think, like in "1984", that the main goal of military is the destruction of resources) is better than doing nothing?
in France, we are obsessed about unemployment, which must be something really terrible. we should be happy that we need less work. but apparently, productivity gains can't be used to make people work less AND earn more money, and so what should be positive became a problem.

Of course content matter and IMO in every case.
The simpliest example would be the SALARY you get for doing the time consuming job.If you are an engineer, you CAN BE dedicated and have a quality in your life that supports you and your family.
If you are an ordinary worker, the quality of your life and the life of your family would be LOW because of your dedication to the simple job and INABILITY to do anything else.
Though I guess one of the differences between dedication and obsession is that when you are dedicated, you can make small changes to get the quality of your work better and when you are obsessed, you can't make changes.

the problem with today's youth is one. they want a snowload of money without any work. That, and all going up to the uni. Last I checked there was a huge demand of high quality craftsmen(builders, carpenters and alike), while all the kids go to some crap like art or theology. then they end up mopping the floor. unis don't prepare high quality craftsmen. scientists, yes. but not craftsmen. as long as this trend continues, we're pretty much snowed.

LOL I didnt call u a child, I said I wished you would finally find your inner child coz you're taking yourself too damn seriously for your own good (complexed sentences dont work well with guys touched by the intellect I guess)...and on the internet of all places
Im whats wrong with the society ? Thats ironic, coming from you..
The comment had nothing to do with your skills but everything to do with you, Kip, a unique member of hc who couldnt make a joke if his life depended on it coz everything is so damn bleak in your world, mister "Im so tough on the interwebz", mister "I have to work really hard to sound macho 24/7" (including in my sleep)...
Lighten up bro and join us in 2014 coz your ignorance is surpassing cavemen...
or you can always
Dance with me and get burned, left holding your tiny wiener, calling me names like a third grader and crying me some more rivers behind your computer screen, coz the truth is you are no match for me, and will never be...

my life never depended on some stupid swaggot jokes. and never will.
oh yeah, you're jewish. if I dis you, Corribus will penalise the snow out of me for speaking my opinion out loud. freedom of speech my ass.
Is this another stupid attempt at trolling? Worse than xerox though, although the little swede got some respect for sharing his opinion about adoptions. but that doesn't matter here, in a thread about what is a "hard" job.
You think you're joking? you're the joke. You can't do nothing else but to derail people's thoughts. pathetic. Yea, I rant a lot. You have a snowing problem? get your ass of your couch for a change. to me you're seem like one of those whiny types who can't get a job because "it doesn't pay much" or other similiar bullsnow.
I've never stood jobless for more than a week. I may be a grumpy pissed off motherbeeper but I get my snow straight. always. This is my bosses love me. 'cause I'm not afraid to speak my opinion out loud.
There's no such snowing thing as a hard job. if it is to you, you're doing it snowing wrong.

LOL, Its not about your life depending on jokes, its about your one dimensional personality which consists of rant, bit*h, hate, complain... Will you ever evolve ? Even teenagers outgrow their phases, how long will you be stuck in yours for crying out loud
Im a mix of orthodox-catholic (not sure why did you think I was jewish but whatever) so feel free to take shots at me whenever you feel like.. FYI, even if I were a jew, why would I ever get bothered by anything a little neonazi wannabe like you has to say ? (come on son, seen way too many Russian anarchist neonazi teens to ever see the phenomenon as anything but laughable)
In order for me to derail your thoughts, you first must have a thought, and lets be honest, you havent had an original one since Margaret Thatcher was running things.
You're just a little punk whos running his mouth over the internet coz his life sucks so bad, instead of using this place to have fun like others, you're bringing your negativity in here trying to spread hatred and ignorance where its not needed.
Look in a mirror bro, the whole reason you're surrounded by all the crap you call your life is coz you're a wretched human being who has nothing but hatred in his heart, which due to your lack of self-awareness is not directed at the right person - that person would be, yup you - Kip...
Fix your attitude and your life will improve or stay grumpy for life...
I really couldnt care less about your job situations (Im not on DF's side in this thread and I have nothing but respect for hard working people), as I said earlier its all about you Kip, an ignorant little kid who rants all day long about everything and blames everyone but himself for his life and the state of the world when in fact its people like you who are holding us back...
Opinions are just like as*holes, everybody has one, even you Kip regardless of how ridiculous they are so yeah, Im glad you have opinions and the urge to speak them out coz whenever I see your posts I get reminded that ignorance is not unique to middle east, it actually makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside...
On another note, Im derailing DF's thread so Im gonna drop it, however if you wanna keep going, just holla at me and I'll make it a VW thread.. coz the night is young

Being like you isn't going to help. being all nice and funny is going to get screwed you over. I've been nice. to the wrong people it seemed. but that is not the snowing point of this thread.
And I assumed you're a jew 'cause your profile states that you live in Israel. With all this "return to your homeland and get paid" politics that "country" puts up, no wonder most people get judgemental and pissed towards them. how the snow should I know that you're orthodox or whatever.
With my comment I meant to say that if you suck as a human being and fail at everything, every snowing job is going to be "hard" for you.
than you came along with your stupid idea of "fun" and derailed the whole snowing thing.
