While that is true, I don't think Conchita would have a shot at winning if the song didn't have quality. Yes, the song is not the only part, but it still plays a big part. However, having a memorable act, a likable stage persona, and an in some way special stage show probably also plays a big part, if not being necessary, in winning. And certainly, Conchita can check all those points also. But I think the combination of a good song and all the other elements that makes the winner.

Yeah, it's never just one factor. It has never been JUST about the song, except at the very beginnging, in the 50s and 60s when there was no such thing as an act.
Every winner has had a more universal appeal and checked most of the following variables: good song, pleasant melody, memorable, good vocals, fitting staging, entertaining act, having an appealing gimmick, being from a country that's well-liked, etc. This is why most winners of eurovision are quite good and those that aren't have some redeeming qualities to them.
I heard the jury final tonight and Molly NAILED her rehearsal. I seriously think they win.
____________
Coincidence? I think not!!!!
United Kingdom - The Children of the Universe has a slightly confusing song structure, but I think there's power in her voice, the melody, the lyrics and the music.
Italy – Emma’s city is standing on the shoulders of Eros Ramazzotti and Nirvana, and she wears a stolen cardigan. It’s good though, I wouldn't be sorry if she’s winning My Favourite Game
La France – Satiric Moustache smiley with party hat: *< :-{D
Spain – A ballad, better than most this year.
Germany – So good and so anonymous. I don't remember anything of it except the accordion.
Denmark - Scoobiedoobiedoo di di dai, I love you where are you? Here! Constructed cliché too, yes But nice and happy
Calm After the Storm is my favourite no 1 due to it's great atmosphere but there are unusually many potential worthy winners this year.
I would be happy if anyone of these wins (in some kind of preliminary order):
The Netherlands,
United Kingdom/Norway/Sweden/Austria,
Finland/Malta
Italy,
Hungary (for the professional acting, not for the song)
Most other songs that have qualified are good but not winners.
The weak entries IMO are (from best to worst) Denmark, Belarus, Romania, Russia, and Azzzerbaijan but all these cases have one or several extenuating circumstances, i.e. good elements.
