I expected a shock non-qualifier. I did NOT expect it to be Estonia :-/

Tanja joins the pantheon of robbed goddesses that didn't make the finals that also includes Rebeka Dremelj, Silvia Night and Nina Zizic.

Actually, so do Aarzemnieki and Suzy. I LOVED them. oh well.

I'm glad San Marino and Montenegro made it. They haven't before. I'm so happy for them <3 The netherlands making it <3 them ftw.

The idea of 4 ugly beared men in jumpsuits slaying the AxHELL <3

I am actually terrified for Israel now. I will cry if they don't make the finals ;__;

I really think Portugal should have made it. The girl in red dress who was from (I think) Albania was really boring, I don't understand why that went through. Ukraine didn't do anything for me either. Island was probably voted through for the lols? San Marino was a pleasant surprise, good to see that one go though. Holland continues the trend from last year with "serious" entries, good to have that one go through also.

The Netherlands SO get this contest now. I watch this contest for the fun, but if all non-fun entries were like theirs, I'd be a happy camper.

still mourning estonia ;__; it serves them right for not sending Sandra Nurmsalu though!

Sanna Nielsen did a great job, real quality! The downscaled light show was a nice contrast toeverybody else's insane infernos. AND for the first time in history we have had an GREEN ROOM INTERVIEW worth watching! LOL

The Netherlands were even better than I could hope for. The staging had a great atmosphere with road stripes reflecting of the lyrics nicely. Very well filmed too, a few cuts after long sequences was a cool effect.

It was really nervous seconds when all finalists except 3 had been announced and neither Sweden nor Netherlands had been mentioned - and then things turned out to be perfectly fine

And then Iceland qualifies out of the blue.

Other big surprises:

- Hungary's performance was super professional, very impressive. A play ready for the theatres.

- Estonia should have qualified too. I had forgotten their rather impressive dance number which is worth an extra thumb.

- Armenia mp3 also did a good job on stage.

I like to base my thumb distribution on the songs rather than the shows, after all it's a song contest. Live shows > music videos, and anyhting can happen when it's live.

My After Show Ranking:

1. Netherlands, Common Linnets, Calm After the Storm
2. Sweden! Sanna! Nielsen! Unbelievably much better live than on radio!
3. Latvia - of the day!
4. Hungary, THE actor of the night
5. Estonia, amazing performance!
6. Armenia
7. Ukraine
8. Iceland
9. Montenegro
10. San Marino
11. Albania
12. Portugal
13. Moldova
14. Russia
15. Belgium
16. Azzzerbaijan

8/10 favourites qualified, nice!

I'll have to grudgingly admit that Sanna wasn't bad, that much is true.

I will still actively root against her because out of ALL the possible winners, she's by far my least favourite. If she wins, i'll be livid.

Holy hell, I do LOVE armenia so much on the relisten. WHAT IF IT'S ONLY ONE KISS!!!!!!!!! THAT TURNS ALL SEEDS INTO TREES??????? YEAHHHH -> foreshadowing?

I think the Netherlands will finish in the top 10. I seriously think they will. They deserve it. SO GOOD.

Ukraine is also amazing on the relisten and I wouldn't be too sad if it won.

The UK still wins though, probably.

I'm really excited for tomorrow. 1) It's my birthday 2) It's a less serious, more fun semi and therefore one that appeals better to my own personal tastes.

Still mourning Estonia, Portugal, Albania and Latvia. *sob*

Happy birthday, Lexxan!

If Sanna Nielsen calls you today to sing a happy birthday song, you must let us know!

<3 <3 <3

I too think that tonight will be the much better semifinal, the majority of my favourites perform tonight. Yay!

Norway’s Silent Storm is almost as good as the Dutch Calm After the Storm. It’s the same title and same idea: a big song in a small package because less is more. I love the piano playing. It’s difficult to choose, but the Dutch storm hits heavily from the start, the voices sound great together and the song has a lot of atmosphere. The Netherlands are the great wide open, while Norway is indoors, under pressure. Anyway, wow Norway!

Finland Hard Rock Hallelujah! Whoo-oh-hoo-ho! It rocks! Impressive songwriting by the Softengine guys, and the singer has a good voice and sings with style.

Austria – Very well done in every aspect except that a man naming himself Wurst is extraordinarily silly.

Malta – It’s a good song but it has bad luck: we have Calm After the Storm this year. Good lyrics and video. However as a bonus, Coming Home is full of echo effects from Fly on the wings of love. It doesn’t work in this song.

Georgia – Country confusion, folk fantasy, poppy pop, hippie hallucination! This is just great, difficult to play and sing but The Shin & Mariko have the skills! Great voice and guitar based sound. Inspired lyrics and very catchy!

Israel - Same Heart is a typical ESC entry (up-tempo, repetition of epic chorus & change of key towards the end) disguised as Bad Romance, which works surprisingly well.

Switzerland – Nice and happy.

Greece – Not good but dance friendly Everybody have to dance to this the whole summer, no matter if we like the song or not.

Slovenia – Very effective pop, nice and catchy and too much: Round and round, drilling holes in any hearing protection in three minutes

Ireland – Irish folk music inspired pop = Compositions following standard 1A =

Lithuania – Attention! This isn’t a good entry. Message delivered.

Romania – Paula’s impressive lung capacity can’t hide that this is mostly air.

Macedonia – Where do we go now?  Country roads, I’m coming home.

Belarus Ej tu nost! I’ve got a cake to bake!

Poland – Now shake the your mama gave ya!

Counting down, 11 hours left.

I wouldn't want to lay my life on the line for it, but i think Austria is safe. Not a lock, but definitely far from unlikely.

I ALSO think Switzerland is safe. Sebalter has had consistently great rehearsals and had a fantastic jury semifinal yesterday. I really love the lad too. He has this sort of casual optimism that he simply cannot cointain (a trait that he shares with Jöran from Aarzemnieki)

The only act that I think is dead no matter what is Ireland. They've sucked the past few days and bombed their jury semifinal.

So underwhelmed.

Really lost it's fire, the singer waned towards the end and the spectacular staging just wasn't there.
