Little has been said about the goal, but boy it was excellent.

The run & assist from Schurrle is great, but that control + instant kick from Gotze...just beautiful

He is only 24 years old, has now scored 10 times in WC history (8th pos. in alltime scoring list!), second time 5 goals in a WC tournament. 3 times he scored the important 1-0 this WC. He ran the most km in summary of all players in the tournament (about 84 km)...
I'm not sure what else has to be done to be called "played amazingly"... maybe if he had a different passport?....

I'm really wandering who pick the best player - the journalists, Adidas, FIFA or... wait a second, Adidas is a sponsor...
There is a committee who elects those awards, no journalists or coaches.
But I may doubt your opinion about Messi and the reason why he was elected. Messi is an outstanding player. Period. But if that should be the reason for handing out that award, he would gain it everytime he participates in a WC
What did he do for Argentine to reach the finals? Scoring 4 goals in group stage. And the other 4 games? pfff.....
I even think Mascherano would have deserved it more than Messi, when it's about an argentinian player...
Maybe you didn't sense my sarcasm or my post doesn't sound sarcastic in English, I don't know. Of course I know that there's a committee which deals with the awards but one of FIFA's committees sold a whole world cup (2022) so what's left for a single award, they can easily bend under the money's pressure. Adidas is a sponsor for those awards and key sponsor of the WC. Messi is the most popular face of Adidas. So I'll leave the math for you... Over the years FIFA had a way more controversial decisions but still this is insult for players like James Rodriguez, Mueller, Roben, Oscar, Neymar and many others who played many levels better than Messi. Yeah, Messi scored 4 goals but the general influence to Argentina's play tended to zero.

Not true. Ronaldo is an amazing player but he was well below his par in his German and US matches. Messi performed up to his standards and made many amazing plays where he threaded the ball through multiple players. If he forces the other team to soak up 2 or 3 of their assets on him, then that alone is a big contribution that opens up other possibilities for the Argentine offense. In terms of goals scored, there's already the Golden Foot award for that contribution. That's not what the Golden Ball award is for. So he had a penalty kick at the end of the match that flew over the net. Big deal. What % of those shots from anybody have actually gone in the net?
Quote: ... maybe if he had a different passport?....
Oh please. Do we have to prove a negative now?
The fact is, Rodriguez netted the most goals, and Messi got Golden Ball. The German team doesn't have a specific star player and the contributions on their team were fairly spread out. They won the WC.

He is just a one-man-show. Period. With outstanding skills, no doubt.
Quote: Messi performed up to his standards...
Then it seems your opinion differs from the majority of all the international journalists. I doubt you find many articles where it says "Well earned award for Messi, no doubt about it..."
Quote: ...and made many amazing plays where he threaded the ball through multiple players. If he forces the other team to soak up 2 or 3 of their assets on him, then that alone is a big contribution that opens up other possibilities for the Argentine offense.
Then why did Argentina only scored 2 goals in 4 bracket matches?
Quote: In terms of goals scored, there's already the Golden Foot award for that contribution. That's not what the Golden Ball award is for...
Then why do you think 85% of the time an offensive player is given the award for best player then? Goals, assists, contribution, fair play, spirit. The golden ball is about more than 1 category I would say.
Quote: So he had a penalty kick at the end of the match that flew over the net. Big deal. What % of those shots from anybody have actually gone in the net?
Did I mention this free kick with any word?

This was refered to a post of Vindicator, not zo one of yours. If you would have followed his posts the last champions league season here on HC in the soccer thread, you would have noticed a kind of antipathy towards german players / clubs. And he was doubting the performance of Müller in this WC. That's why I posted this answer. I didn't say Müller should have earned the golden ball, I was just trying to underline his performance. He has scored more goals in 2 tournaments than the whole english team in the last 4 tournaments...
Quote: The fact is, Rodriguez netted the most goals...
This award is given automatically, no opinions needed..
Quote: ...and Messi got Golden Ball.
Arguable decission even by argentine people (just read Maradons's opinion about it...)

He will beat the record in 2022, or earlier. I like that he plays with "13" like "Der Bomber".
If he score another "5 at least" goals in 2018 he will be the only player who ever did that in 3 WC's!

Group Stage was awesome, Knockout stage not so much (although it was tense, very tense till the end).
Considering we equalize the record of goals in a WC (171 goals, like 1998) I can't complain.
