'Homeless spikes' installed outside of London Flats
Article
I guess these upscale flats have had homeless people sleeping in the same spot repeatedly, so they installed these metal studs into the concrete in the spot to keep them from sleeping there. It has generated controversy.
I don't like it. What do you guys think?

Me neither, but if they're on their property, like, they're allowed to do that. It is kind of douchey, however.

I can sort of understand not wanting people taking drugs, drinking and pissing on your property.

Well, if it comes with a shelter they can actually sleep in, it makes sense. You indirectly lead them to the shelter, spending less wellfare on their health problems and spending less on public safety etc etc. It's not a very presentable idea though, it's like the guillotine, the intention can be good (less pain) but it appears as something cold and brutal. It also gives the people the impression that they live in a dog-eat-dog city.

Btw, it's not just building entrances like the pictures in the link, I read the same news with pictures of spikes under bridges and other regular homeless spots. So, it's not just about some flat owners.

If you have the money to spend on that sort of installation you should give it to homeless shelters instead.

The thing is, even when you build a shelter, the homeless may still prefer under bridges and similar because they are additcs and they cant score in a shelter.

Untrue in my experience, for London at least. Sleeping in the cold is the absolute worst thing, they'll do anything to avoid it. It's deadly.
If you have a room in a shelter, you can smoke, shoot or whatever as much as you want in there, as long as you keep it private (there are different rules depending on the organisation/shelter/personell, but generally it's extremely hard to make people follow them so you tend to become a bit lenient towards drug use... many need it to survive after all) Inhabitants usually leave the shelter to either beg for money (or prositute themselves), purchase drugs or you know, hang out somewhere.
Those you catch outside sleeping are either the ones that homelessness organisations haven't picked up yet, or those who have been thrown out because of various reasons.

The dehumanization is the #1 issue with the practice. Short-term it's cheap and efficacious, but I still think its ultimately harmful. Common sleeping areas being installed with metal spikes makes them feel like an animal. Granted, without metal spikes, homeless people aren't exactly celebrities, but it's another dose of fuel for the fire. If you treat a person like a dog, said person will behave like one.

I agree the issue is mostly how the idea represents itself. Feels like if you have no home = you are not human. Such a scary path to start treading on...

Well, if everybody prefers the shelters anyway (in winter, at least) and the spikes are only meant for people who are NOT accepted in shelters for some reason, what would be the point of building shelters instead of spikes?

More space means you can accept more people.
Money also allows organisations to offer other services to help clients recover and prevent others to fall into the homelessness.
Surely a better investment of your money, especially morally.

Oh, so you were talking about lack of space. "Thrown out" followed by "various reasons" usually associates with other kind of stuff, like not being allowed in because of aggressive and anti-social types of behavior.

The intensity of them would be designed to avoid laying down but not stepping. It's not like they are medieval death traps set to get you killed.

It puts these homeless into sort of a state of limbo. If they're being anti-social (as in aggressive; not as in shy ) and/or distributing drugs, what is the homeless facility suppose to do? Let them hang out? They can go outside, but then what? You don't have anything to arrest them for. You could try a 3rd option of sending them somewhere geared for therapy and recovery, but what if they're not cooperative? Do you keep them there forcefully? If so, then it's basically just a deception of language, and it is prison without actually calling it prison. It's not legally possible unless you can arrest them for some reason.
