Journey to the Void (Pathfinder horror IC)

There was nothing but darkness, and then there was feeling. A feeling that all weight and time had gone crossed the minds of those who dweled within the dark, slowly fading as their consciousness, gone for just a second, returned to them. And with thought came hearing, and with gearing came the sound of a body landing in a puddle, accompanied by a bloody, broken wheeze.

And then your eyes became accustomed to the dark. A dim light from the cave entrance showed that you were no longer standing in the ruins where you had finally hunted down and defeated the trap master, or at the very least, you do not remember stalactites and stalagmites growing from the cieling and the floor. You also remember it being dry and frigid, but now the air was almost heavy with humidity, and you are standing in what seems to be a small puddle. The air stirs around you, flowing ever so gently towards the cave entrance, and the evening light peaking in glitters on the stone floor, giving you just enough light to see the dying void monster that had plagued and evaded you for close to a month. The weezes from its broken body turned into a pained, but triumphant and cruel, laugh.

"One... Last... Game." It gasped, lifting its head to give Nathanial a mischievous grin before its eyes suddenly lost their black hue and it fell limp. The trap master's body jerked once in a death throe, before it began to unwind, becoming a black and fading mist that disappeared in the breeze, as solid as a nightmare.

And with that, the party was alone. Water dripped from a stalactite somewhere deeper in the cave, but beyond that and the sound of each other breathing, everything appears to be still, and they appear to be alone. The last of the sickness from your teleportation finally wears off, giving you full movement and the ability to talk and feel, though a splitting headache accompanies this last revelation.

What do you do?

Ciaran walked up to the puddle to wash her face. She spat, said: "This is worse than a long night at the inn." Then rubbed her head. "Any idea where we ware guys? Also, since when was this guy so good he could make us vanish and reappear somewhere? I need to go outside."

Ciaran stomped off towards the cave exit to see what the outside looked like, water dripping from her face and vest.

Nathanial pushed himself off the ground, checking to be sure his equipment was in order and no serious injuries presented themselves. His head pounded, but a brief, one-handed examination yielded no blood, and no cracks or bruises. "Ciaran, wait. It would be wise get our bearings first. Comrades, are any of you injured? Exquisitor?"

@Kareeah: You know, barely, that the thing that came out of the Trapmaster on his death was a one way portal of some kind, though where it led and why it felt like you were wrung out like a towel are quite out of your grasp.

@Dagoth: The water, like everything else, is oddly warm when you put your face in it, though it quickly cools off once you climb up the small incline in front of the cave. Outside, you see that there is about a foot of ledge that you could walk onto if you desired, though after that there is a pretty sudden drop. Looking over, you would see that the next ledge is, perhaps, 20 feet down and is quite a bit larger, it even has a few trees filled with birds fluttering around on them.

Within the first few moments of her senses coming to her, Feather tried to identify if there were any immediate threats in the area, outside of what seemed to be the trap master on his way out. She then heard Nathanial ask about the others conditions.

"I am well."

A smile crossed her face as she thought back to when such an incident would likely have left her laying in the puddle she now stood within.

Tucking her starknife that she had called back to her just prior to being mysteriously transported to this cave, Feather joins Ciaran at the cave's entrance.

"I could take an end of a rope down there, to that ledge, and tie it to a tree, if we would like to go down." Feather looks back to Nathanial. "Unless we would like to explore this cave here? Where ever here is."

With that thought, she looked to the sky, trying to remember what time of day it was, and compare that to the sun's current placement.

Feather would be the first to notice... upon looking for a sun, there was none to be found. The light came from the sky in full evening, but where it came from... well, that was a different matter. One thing was sure, they weren't exactly in Faerun anymore. As for the interior of the cave, there were a few bulges that weren't exactly rock shaped that dusted the ground, leaning up against some stalactites.

Vorbrin stands up and dusts himself off. Emotionless as always, he replies to Nathanial's question.

"I am fine."

Vorbrin looks around the cave trying to spot anything out of place or anything that might pose immediate danger.

Ciaran leaned against the cave entrance. "Whatever you say, boss." she said with a nod to Nathaniel. "I'm eager for a game plan. There's a steep drop outside. It seems like the only way out. Unless we want to investigate that fat monster's cave first, I suggest you go and tie a rope, Feather."

She sauntered back in, sat on the floor. "I'm glad everyone's all right, however. And maybe we should investigate this place a bit, first. Like, this trap master dude, he always had something somewhere." Ciaran glances around the cave.

As Vorbrin gets up, Ciaran nods to him. "So, boss man, what do you say? Where to?"
Her brow crinkles as again she's amazed by the fact what a stone cold snow Vorbrin is. Gets teleported and acts like it ain't a thing.
"Also, Nathaniel, not that it matters but I feel terribly hungover. I hope we get to an inn soon."

Feather walked back to the others, and then to the shapes she had seen before. However, she approached cautiously, trying to keep her distance, but close enough to see what they might be.

Nathanial rubbed Ciaran's temples to hopefully alleviate some of the pain, directed her to pop her ears, and checked for damage to her skull while he spoke. "Perhaps we should attempt to make contact with our superiors? They knew how extensive the Trapmaster's lairs were and may not be expecting us for some time—they will not know anything has gone amiss, and we may need their assistance in returning home. Do any of you have the appropriate sort of magic?"

Ciarain's headache is basically alleviated by Nathaniel's attention, though having her temples rubbed and having a paladin in the way keeps Ciarain from noticing all of the skeletons... fortunately, despite his headache, the local exquisitor finds all five of them, and he notices that the wind dies away completely.

Now then, what was so special about these skeletons? Well, they weren't animated (in fact, if they were undead, then they would be trapped anyway since their bones had actually begun sinking into the surface of the rock), they didn't have any banners or sigils to identify who they were, and they were old. Very, very old. Their brittle (if drenched) bones were pitted, and the armor that draped over their shoulders and chest was rusted or rotten away to little more than worthless metal scraps. But that would happen to any corpse that sat in a perpetually damp cave for a few decades, so what made them special?

That would be the glowing roll of paper clutches lightly in the hand of the skeleton farthest in. It was rolled up like a scroll, and based on how the hand was clenched around it (and how the parchment was crinkled), the skeleton had been holding it in a death grip... before being decapitated, as the lack of a head seemed to suggest. The way to the body is slightly downhill from your current position, but the stalagmites should give you plenty of traction if you find a way to secure a rope to them...

"I believe we are out of reach of our superiors." Said Vorbrin while staring at downhill. "And even if we had a way to contact them, they would offer us no support in such a case. It seems to me that we have brought to this sun-less place for a reason. Whether this reason is good or bad, however, remains to be determined. Which is exactly what we will do. And we will start from that."

The inquisitor pointed at the farthest skeleton with the scroll.

"Ciaran, you are the nimblest of us all. What would you require to reach that parchment?"

Nathanial had to peer closely before he noticed what the Exquisitor was pointing at, but eventually he made out the glowing scroll.

"Intriguing." The same forces that caused the decay of the scroll's bearers should have likewise destroyed the parchment—unless of course it was magic. "Could it be bait, perhaps?" he sounded interested, not worried.

Ciaran's expression got quite sunny from Nathaniel's touch. She somehow forgot for a moment how miserable it was to get teleported. She looked at where Vorbrin looked, thought exactly for as long as it took for her to open her mouth and said:

"Well, whatever it is, I had my share of arrows sticking out of my chest and surviving those traps. I can reach it, mister Vorbrin, but I'd like someone to hold a rope, for me to hold on while I'm going down there. Mind helping me a hand again, Nathaniel, or Feather for that matter? Just someone to hold my weight."

"I may not be as light as a feather." She said, flexing her guns, "but you should be able to hold me for a few moments, anyway."

Peering down, Feather noticed the scroll mentioned. She thought about using her starknife to remove the hand carrying it, and then using said rope as a lasso to bring the scroll and hand to them, but wasn't sure that the rope could reach the distance. Anyway, having the scroll thud against the cave floor may not be the best of ideas. It might erupt into a giant blast of fire, or summon up a demonic being of some sort.

"I will help with the rope. And if you are worried about traps..." Feather looks around for possible traps.

Ciaran took the gloves. She took off her heavy iron gauntlets she used to pummel people and tucked them away at her belt. "Thank you, Nathaniel. It always amazes me how chivalrous you are." She laughed.

Vorbin and Feather can see that, as far as the cave is concerned everything is completely normal. Nothing glows, nothing sticks out in an unusual way and nothing screams trap to you. However, you feel that the breeze has started to come back, and strangely it seems to be going into the cave. While this makes the air less stale and oppressive, it would also strike you as odd, as air typically only flows one way through a cave system... And another odd thing. While the breeze is pleasant, it is also stronger than the outgoing wind had been. Where that had been barely enough to disturb the air, this breeze was able to ruffle your damp hair, and it was slowly increasing.

Ciaran would feel the breeze as well, though it would barely disturb her as she made her way down to the skeleton with the scroll. Upon taking it, she would feel a warm, light comfort coming from the ancient parchment, along with a desire to open it up and take a look, though that would be slightly difficult to pull off in here, as the downward slope and the much, much slicker rock she was standing on left her only one hand to work with. With this in mind, it would be easy for the martial artist to ignore the compulsion, and save opening the scroll for when she had her feet firmly on solid ground.
