Poll Question: Gaming if you have six months?
If your doctor tells you, you have only 6 months left in this world, would you spend ANY time playing computer games?

Ummm, yes I would. I love video games - a lot of my social life involves hanging with friends, gaming and having some beers. Why would I stop?

Not sure. Depends on how miserable I am, what I'm capable of doing otherwise.

The months, I assume. Or, how miserable you are during those months. Because if you're going to die in 6 months, it's unlikely that you'll be fine the whole time then suddenly drop dead.

I don't understand the "no" answer: what's the logic behind that? "Heck, doc told me I'll die in 6 months, I must stop wasting my time with this computer gaming nonsense and concentrate on the really important things to do"?
Like, WHAT?
Also, the situation isn't THAT much different from "usual" - after all, you could just drop dead every second, so people who would "change their habits" on that news are obviously operating on the assumption that they HAVE time to waste and that it's ok to do so, as long as it SEEMS, time is in copious supply.

Take out gaming from the situation, according to your logic, people who learn that they have very limited time left, should keep on living just as usual?
I remember about a book a nurse wrote and according to her, the most common regret people on death bed mostly feel is not having spent more time with loved ones and family. So, if you decide to do something special with them (like travel places you always wanted to see but never had the time because of your job or routine etc etc), you wont be gaming much, anyway. Not because you decided not to, it wont come around.
I also think it depends a lot on your gaming habits. If it's a social activity to you, you may keep on but if you play solo while you're alone, well, it can be quite depressing with the idea of death hanging over your head (and it will).
Actually, I'm quite surprised there are so many yes and so little no's. I was expecting something more like a tie.

Most people aren't going to die in 6 months, so acting like there's time to spare is a reasonable assumption.

Yes, but when you read between the lines, he kind of means you shouldn't be doing things that you label as waste of time, anyway, at all.
Not a completely unreasonable argument, yet our mind is generally set to avoid the idea of death. So as long as the time isnt certain, we usually behave like we'll live forever, even when we are 85. And laziness feels good, hence everybody kills time every once in a while.

So.. let's face it. in 6 months I would not be able to do all the things I would want. Like to travel the world (for lack of cash). See my children grow up, or at least see my niece be born.
I would rather give up things like my career or building a house rather than to give up on of the few things that could help me take my mind of the fact that I'm soon to be a corpse.

Yes, and that works the other way round as well: You shouldn't waste your time FIGURING OUT what is supposed to be meaningful and what not - you will just end up regretting a lot, being disappointed and so on, since the simple truth is, that it's not the things you enjoy that change, it's just that you will miss "meaning" in simply LIVING.
Simple example: SLEEP. It's somewhat "wasted" - but if you start sleeping less, your state will deteriorate, since you will regenerate less energy: in the end you won't gain anything by changing your sleeping habits.
Or your suggestion to "spend more time" with the family? For what purpose? You can't make everyone forget your fate and situation, and you will just find things all the more unbearable.
I'd like you to keep in mind that my first wife died from cancer age 42, so I have some experience with this.
Life is what you make it, and life under the shadow of impending death is first and foremost DEPRESSIVE; you can't counter that by trying to make every second count because you are bound to fail, increasing depression.
Which means, you are best off, when you can simply forget the fact, which in turn means, you are best served when you just live on as if nothing happened (but of course you can't). There may be exceptions, and a lot of movies and novels deal with this, but they are movies andd stories and don't necessarily reflect the real thing.

My condolences. If it's not too personal and you don't mind my asking, was she the one you refer to when talking about love at first sight in the related thread or was it your second wife?
