Might as well check it. It has some good points but many more disappointing ones though.

I wonder how this thread survived the spider apocalypse, or more importantly, why.

I couldn't agree more!
So do you think H7 is better than H6? (even if it's only a slight amount)

"Better" features, not necessarily a better experience. Certainly worse combat.

Forget H7.
You'll just wondering the whole time what it is exactly, what makes the game feel such an utterly warped experience - and why your PC is struggling with it.
You'll also curse the bugs still there.
The campaigns I'd call a step forward.

I'm getting bored lately.. is homm7 worth picking up and having some fun with? Or would I be better off just continuing to play random other turn based strategy games (warlock 2, homm1-5, etc.)? Thanks!

Today was a somewhat momentous day for myself. Despite the warnings, several months ago I purchased Heroes 7 for a knock down price, and after much grafting I did something not many people have managed to do - complete the campaigns. Based on this I figured it was worth sharing my views and opinions on the game.
Despite it's reputation (and possibly due to jumping in after the final patch), I didn't find the game particularly buggy and only witnessed one or two crashes. However, what did severely hamper the experience was how darn slow it was. Despite stripping back the graphics pretty much all the way it would often take pushing ten minutes to start up the game and load a save file, and computer turns were similarly punishing.
Quite what the computer was doing this time was unknown.... it definitely wasn't making good strategic decisions. In battles it constantly made the wrong choices - for example the computer would often wait with his range troops even if I had stronger but lower initiative range troops myself. Net effect was that instead of taking a bite out of my army with his shooters I decimated them with mine before they got a shot off. Comparing results of the auto combat with what I could do manually showed how poor the AI was. Often I came out of battles unscathed that the computer had somehow managed to lose.
Battles themselves felt more like mini-puzzle games, where the intention was to see if I could win without losing any troops what so ever - which I presume was the point of the try again option at the end of battle. I did find it interesting how much initial troop positioning could affect the outcome of battles.
Map exploration felt arduous and uninspiring, and town builds weren't interesting. I didn't understand the need for all the buildings that brought bonuses in my town's zone of control as by the time I had the spare build capacity and resources for them I'd normally cleared out pretty much everything nearby!
But there were aspects of the game that I enjoyed.
I liked the way that spells got more powerful and expanded their use as your hero developed. Especially in the campaigns where you could develop level 30 heroes, and you could have a range of tactics for battles. But some of the magic schools were overpowering, and for the first time in a heroes game direct damage spells were often all that you needed. A fully developed prime magic specialist could wipe out a stack of any size with implosion, then get to cast a second spell (admittedly at a slightly lower level) and have basically nailed the toughest of enemy armies.
I liked that there was a good variety of different battle locations (even if there were one or two the computer couldn't navigate properly!). The Shroud of Massala skill class was fun to play, and some of the scenarios had interesting aspects to them (such as the co-ordinated attack on the Wizards by the orcs).
If enough effort had been put into getting a stream lined game with decent AI then the basics were there for a worthy game in the Heroes series. But as it is it looks like it may well be a rather disappointing ending.
