The abilities seem very intuitive so I guess they work. I am also wondering what's up with the mana drain on djinns. It makes me wonder if we'd get spellcasting creatures but I haven't seen any hints. Maybe it's planned but at this point it's not implemented.

Like with Imps in H5, only that they give it to your Hero.
@Rakshasa
They aren't "good" at all. They stayed with their SLAVEMASTERS, only because they enjoyed the power they had.

caster-creatures won't be missed by me. never liked that mechanic anyway
seems ok. nothing really stands out other than the fact that i like the way they seem to approach creature abilities: almost completely passive excepting disciple, though that seems more like a toggle. creature with actives never really sat well with me tbh so i'm happy about this.

I completely agree. I've always favoured passive abilities over activated ones, and a lot of the activated abilities never got used by me in previous games. Seriously, the only ones I recall using regularly were the Leap ability and that OP divebomb sweep used by griffins.

I like that they aren't overdoing abilities as other have said, passives are better than actives most of the time for me.
That said, I dislike that Academy has so many creatures with immunity. Gargoyles have magic immunity, Cabirs have fire immunity, Djiins have prime immunity and Golems have slow/stun immunity?
Why? I think this is a bit too much.

The wizards units have always had the most magical immunities though they seem to have done this for more units this time. I also will miss the spell book but they did not have it in Heroes 2 or 3 so it is not something worth much complaint in my opinion.

That's not a reason though. Spellbook was missing in H2/H3 probably because the technology wasn't there, back then.
In my eyes it's an improvement (introduced by H4 nonetheless!) and should continue, albeit not overdoing it (no need for 3 creatures with spellbook in each Faction)

Well given with how this is ubisoft that might be the only reason we get. I agree the spellbook is an improvement and I have no idea why it was removed considering it was not over-powered or anything(especially not in H4).

I like the academy... there are few interasting things here. While they are magic focused faction, they are quite protected from magic themselves. Now Fire and Primal immunity, isn't all that great, considering we have 7 magic schools ... so it can be easily bypased. It's genie's mana steal ability - it all depends on how much mana will they steal ofc., but it can have severe effect on magical oriented heroes. I guess might will be the way to go when fighting them. However there's smart skill selection on chabir, which i like most. They are vulnerable to water, and have ability to repair golems, gargoyles AND titans. So there's a lot of oportunity for unit collaboration, and early creeping. However they are also high-priority targets, and considering their water vulnerability, and faction's general magical protection, one might rethink "might" strategy a bit ... it can offer interasting magical (water - read: Ice Bolt) oriented strategy, that can be exception to the rule.
One thing im curious most are Apprentices and Disciples tho. Do they actualy fly? If so it would be very interasting indeed to have highly mobile shooter. And are they Large creature? Can their ability be used multiple times instead of their regular attack? if so that'd be great, as you can choose to protect them behind ranks, or do huge damage but exposing them to enemy in return...

Maybe it had something to do with scaling of spelldamage not working quite the same as scaling of normal damage, making caster OP early game and UP late game.
BTW, remember H4 genies? definitely OP.
I was wondering something: if disciples are large creatures, how will their shot be? Will it be a 2 squares wide beam, or will it be released unsymmetrical (not from the middle of the creature)? As they have piercing shot, this does matter, in contrast to the large Titans for example.

Casting creatures were OK but I won't miss tchem in Heroes VII. Their spells were useful at the beginning of the game but later I always stopped to use tchem because Heroes were always more effective, maybe except for two: Shamans and their Haste and Lich asters and their Raise Undead. They were really useful but otherwise - this is not that great of a loss.

Doesn't it form its own type of balance in that case?

I was more referring to the unimpressive spellbook of the magi, but yes the genie was overpowered.

H5 formula was stupid. If you follow a normal formula (each unit dealing the same damage), it can be scalated normally.
Magues (well, Apprentices ) could have no normal, range attack and instead have a spellbook with a mix of useful spells + a direct damage one (and the upgrade with an AoE damage spell ). That could work perfectly, IMO.
Steyn said: BTW, remember H4 genies? definitely OP.
Yes, but because of the spells choices + high mana (Create Illusion, Song of Peace...sooo good).
