9 year old girl shoots instructor dead at gun range

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/11057775/Nine-year-old-American-girl-accidentally-kills-shooting-instructor-with-Uzi-submachine-gun.html

I honestly cannot fathom the stupidity of people.  I myself often go to gun ranges and have never fired anything bigger than a Magnum - because I cannot handle anything bigger.  What damn fool thought this was a good idea??

How traumatized is this little girl going to be.  And the man she accidentally killed, what about his family, his wife and kids.

And how the hell do I post this article ???  Ack.

(CNN) -- A 9-year-old girl learning to fire a submachine gun accidentally killed her instructor at a shooting range when the weapon recoiled over her shoulder, according to Arizona authorities.
The instructor, 39-year-old Charles Vacca, died at a hospital late Monday night after he was shot in the head.

The Mohave County Sheriff's Office said the girl was with her parents. The website of Bullets and Burgers, the shooting range where the accident happened, says children between the ages of 8 and 17 can shoot a weapon if accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Police identified the weapon as an Uzi, an Israeli-made submachine gun.

Cell phone video released by authorities Tuesday shows the moments before the fatal shots were fired, CNN affiliate KLAS reported.
In the video, Vacca and the girl are at an outdoor range. The wind blows a target in the distance. Vacca shows the child how to hold the gun then helps her establish her grip and her stance. She fires one round and dirt flies above the target. Vacca adjusts the Uzi, places his right hand on her back and his left under her right arm.
She fires several rounds in rapid succession and the gun kicks to the left as she loses control. The video ends before the fatal head shot. In releasing the video, authorities did not identify who made it.
KLAS reported the girl was a tourist from the Northeast.
Kids and guns: What's your parenting style?

The station spoke with Sam Scarmardo, who operates Bullets and Burgers, about the incident. "We really don't know what happened," he said. "Our guys are trained to basically hover over people when they're shooting. If they're shooting right-handed, we have our right-hand behind them ready to push the weapon out of the way. And if they're left-handed, the same thing."

Vacca was married, well-liked and a veteran, KLAS said. The range, which is about an hour's drive from Las Vegas, says on its Facebook page: "We separate ourselves from all other Las Vegas ranges with our unique 'Desert Storm' atmosphere and military style bunkers."

who the bleep sets a gun to full auto and gives it to a goddamn 9 year old, who can barely control the recoil?

seriously. this really takes the retard cake.

the instructor himself is to blame. he should've seen that something like this would happen.

surely the kid will need therapy after this though.

The venue is called Burgers and Bullets (I believe).  I agree though Kip, the instructor just should not have allowed this.  That doesn't mean I don't feel sorry for him and his family, but jeesh this is just so dumb.  And he was an ex-army guy too.

I can just about cope with a Glock 34 (my gun of choice at the firing range ), so this family and this instructor ..... well this was an accident waiting to happen.

They allow 8 year olds to shoot with guns? Even automatic ones? Wow... just wow...

There are no words to express how utterly dumb this is

I don't understand it, please someone explain me what of an eight year old should protect itself to learn how to use a gun?

To be fair, uzi is much smaller than magnum.
It also has practically no recoil.

Still, you might want to check if the kid can lift it up properly before arming it

Its a dumb accident.  In fact, it shouldn't have happened for a couple of reasons:-

1.  Dumb parents, giving a 9 year old the opportunity to shoot an Uzi.
2.  The stupidity of the gun club for entertaining this or promoting it.
3.  The instructor ... what was he thinking.  He should just have vetoed it.

Its like giving a child a rattlesnake to handle.

i don't even know if this is relevant at this time(since this is old news, most likely, and we've already debated it before, i'm almost 100% positive), but training children responsibly how to use firearms is not hard. from personal experience, i have had my niece shoot an ar-15, and my uncle has had his daughter continually shoot firearms since she was 4. nobody has ever been hurt. she's actually shot a deer before.

that some idiots gave a full-auto firearm to a kid, shows how irresponsible those adults are. full-auto firearms need a considerable amount of hand and arm strength to be able to control muzzle rise, let alone drift.

regardless, if this story is true(and not just anti-gun propaganda on the internet meant to sway opinion), then it would have had to happen at a specialty range, as normal ranges do not allow full-auto weaponry. whoever put that gun into her hands, should be imprisoned for manslaughter. the poor girl was probably traumatized over killing a human being. no doubt other kids probably made her feel like **** about it(more than she already does) in school.

just started reading some of the stuff in the thread. so, the instructor is the guy who gave her the firearm, and he was killed? if that's correct, then i guess he won't have to be tried for manslaughter...

being that she was able to fire just one shot, though, the weapon may have been semi-auto. which confuses, as to why the weapon got away from her...

Don't responsible gun owners start teaching how to handle firearms to kids from the .22LR chambered firearms?

at least the dudes who run the IraqVeteran8888 youtube channel seem to do so.

Arms are part of American culture, mocking on that is like mocking Frenchies for smelly cheese.

Accidents can happen everywhere and in most stupid situations as well. Last week, a 4yo girl pushed the brakes on a car then the car squeezed to death her mother behind.

Kids are...kids, keep them far away from danger, that's all.

Well said, fred. I don't see a problem with training kids into shooting and I am aware that someone with no knowledge on the issue is just gonna overreact. Stormy and others here probably didn't even see a gun in their life, and they surely don't understand the american "culture" on guns, so I get their reaction to what in reality is nothing more than an accident. What concerns me is that, as you said, people like this become active into anti-gun legislation which is, in my opinion, a disgusting attempt to rob people of one of their rights. A demarche based on the faulty reasoning of blaming the guns rather than the ones using them.
