HC Homepage Upgraded

I've just released a significant upgrade of the Heroes Community home page.

The changes are:
- The table is now 1000 pixels wide instead of stretching to 100% of the screen.
- Many small improvements in spacing of table contents to make it look better and easier to scan.
- New section implemented - Heroes Community Games.
- HTML code was significantly optimized - about 25% smaller than the old version.

The old homepage was designed well over a decade ago when screen resolutions were much smaller. The main issue was that its layout became increasingly less useable on larger screens. I'll keep a copy of the old home page for a while, so you can compare and re-adjust

Hopefully this makes your HC experience more enjoyable, it does for me

Heroes Community Games are a big addition - read more about it and comment about the games here.

This thread is for commenting about the new homepage design.

i like the spacing, but the white dead space on either side hurts the eyes. the blue-grey of the every-other post color would look much better in that dead space, in my opinion.

i think it would also help to focus the eyes on what it needs to, as well. draw the attention to the text, and whatnot.

Different skins would be a nice idea... especially one that has a black background.

Yes something similar to what RPGWatch has.

Thank You for your hard work BTW.

Can we have the old skin too, as an option?

The new one is nice, but kinda... claustrophobic! I miss the space

Personally, I don't like it. The 100% format was way better for me. Now I have to zoom in to feel comfy.

I actually liked the 100% stretching. The current look leaves a lot of empty white space on either side of the screen.

At first glance, the only difference I can see is the empty space and the game links. I like the old one better, too but according to my experience, you have to wait a little, get used to it and then decide. The eyes are conservative when it comes to things like this.

To bookmark the old page link and use it as the main is also an option.

I guess I can get used to the empty space. But the white background is killing my eyes, maybe something can be done about that?

Why not simply media query it in CSS, Val?

@media (max-width: 1680px) {
 .whateveryoucallthetableclass {
   width: 100%;
 }
}

and you're done. I mean, it'd require a bit more work but that's the gist of it.

We could go for a little responsiveness overall, that'd actually be an upgrade. It's the 21st century. A fixed width of 1000px especially blows on smartphone resolutions.

I don't like the new homepage, it's a fugly eyesore. I get that you want advertising space, but is this really the way to go? A monthly HC subscription would imho be a better idea.

I do not like the new layout, but if it's here to stay, I'd implement some kind of a background image, preferably the one that's on AoH.

I didn't even see anyone complain about the old one to begin with lol

if you really want to start moving out of web 1.0, it would have been much better to use that extra space by increasing the font size
fixed widths defined in px are considered a really poor design standard today

Well I'm a bit surprised by the response and the negativity some of you expressed. It certainly has a dampening effect on my enthusiasm to do more.

Like someone said, new things are always a shock to the system. I suspect that if the new design was the old and the old design was the new, the sentiment would be similar. I did ask a non HC user (someone not used to the old design) prior to the release and the feedback was very positive. If you want to disagree with this point, I suggest doing the same experiment with someone unbiased, without telling them your preference first.

Of course everyone is entitled to an opinion. I will leave the old homepage linked above for anyone who wishes to bookmark it. Access HC through a bookmark and you will have the old design. But I won't be reinstating the old homepage.

The brightness of the white space issue suggests that the brightness on your screen is turned up too high for your eye comfort. However, this is the case for many people and a number of modern screens actually can't be dimmed down enough, so that's a valid point. I've updated the background color to make it slightly gray on the home page and game page.

The realistic minimum width of the old design with the HC logo and the banner being side by side is about 900 pixels. So I question the idea that adding 100 pixels of width to it would suddenly make it significantly less mobile friendly. Having said that, it is not my intention to support mobile devices.

The advertising space comment makes no sense at all. I did not add a site skin ad.

Background image - I'm open to suggestions as to whether you would choose a background image (like on AOH, but lighter gray) over the current solid light gray background. Would this add to the heroes feel of the page or would it look out of place with a mostly text-based design?

Would it be too much work to be able to select a background based on your forum settings?

I am against a background picture in general. It just makes the site look like myspace from 2000

The site does present information better in the new format but the empty sides just look stupid.

Perhaps you could consider using double columns instead of the one we have now? That would probably mess with the non-widescreen resolution users though.

The new format is pretty much what a verticular widescreen looked before btw.
