map sizes:
small = 72 by 72 .... 5184 tiles. Equal to heroes 3 medium
medium = 152 by 152, HUGE! 23104 tiles. An XL in H3 was 144 by 144
large = 228 by 228 ... 51984 tiles. (10 times size of small, over twice as big as medium)
I'm afraid to count the XL
I agree with mocara and jb, my map has been modified tons of times already. Today I found a bad shipyard where I had to build the 4th ship in order to get aboard.

Use the Large and XL feature! =)
Thought about sizes of maps.
I just hope people dont make maps with fast rush thinking. I mean with the depth and amount of possibilities in this game it would be a shame to have most of the maps designed on small/medium maps just so game can end week 3 or 4.

small 72x72 is only equivalent to med H3 map in terms of tiles. If you want to recreate H3 maps for H4 you`ll find that you need if anything a larger size if you want to keep the distances accurate.

I think you're right Frank. Even the slowest creature (besides waspwort) travels 18 tiles. How fast did a slow hero travel in HoMM3?
H4 small is smaller than a H3 medium (relative to hero, travelling, etc.), but a H4 small is much bigger than H3 small.

I have studied and playtested Camelnor's remake of H2's Crimson and Clover. My opinions:
Very good remake. I think it should be in ToH (assuming it's bug free like any map).
Even though the map is a classic and very well converted by Camelnor, I give it 2 stars and here is why:
- practically NO hero development
- easy to conquer AI (this is because of 3do)
and yes, I am a harsh judge.
Overall, crimson and clover for H4 will be much better than H3's. H3's conversion had 2 issues:
- whoever had better start (Shakti, Solmyr) had BIG advantage
- whoever went first (red) had BIG advantage
changing the subject ... I think on the unaccepted maps page, perhaps we could put explaining text about the page like:
"Maps with bugs, imbalanced, or otherwise imperfect. Play at own risk." <-- this would include my map if I cannot debug it.
I've made 3 attempts to fix the bug from my map "key to victory", but it still starts up only 30-40% of the time, and I have NO idea what's causing such. it's too bad there is no validate map option for debugging.
Also, I've been thinking about which H3 maps would be best to convert to H4 ... and they are the ones I hate most LOL including desert war and battlemania.

return of a mapmaker
We might have a 4th person for the map council: Hapkane. He is back and I hope to have him as part of the team.
To the map council: I would ask you guys to start submitting me maps to 'post' on ToH starting next week, when the heroes classic opening settles.

I'll be doing another map, "Spellbent" in the tradition of "Spellcasters" (an NWC original H2 map) and "Spellbound" (the H2 Oracle League version). It takes me a month to do each map (with the little time I have).

Hey, wiggy
Can u send me all those 3 maps by Jex - maps from CD r really boring.
My e-mail is econ@mail.tomsknet.ru
Quote: playtested Jex's mines. My opinions:
Another very good map. Although opponent's secondary town lies about 3-4 days away from your own secondary town, I don't find this to be a map where whomever gets a better start wins. Finding 2 of the same town is an advantage, but that's very common, and it doesn't seem to be an overpowering advantage on this map (it's a bigger advantage on closed maps).
Jex has expressed earlier a concern of having too much snow, thereby giving order troops a terrain travelling advantage. Order troops (halflings/ dwarves / magi / golems) are slow anyway, and have 125% travel instead of 175% travel ... so I don't find this to be any problem.
Average completion time for me was 4 or 5 weeks. But an early rush is also possible, which makes it all the more intense.
Very good map. I give it 3 stars.
As for the CD maps, I've modified (to balance) 2 of them, and plan to modify more. However, most of those maps are either RPG's, or are meant for only single player, and would really suck for multiplayer.

I will now humbly accept your "2" rating :-( *sniff, sniff*
--------------------------------------------------------
Now some comments on your comments:
"- easy to conquer AI (this is because of 3do) "
Yes, but this was made as a multiplayer map (assuming we get a patch sometime soon ), and thus the AI wont matter, since it will be humans.
"Overall, crimson and clover for H4 will be much better than H3's. H3's conversion had 2 issues:
- whoever had better start (Shakti, Solmyr) had BIG advantage "
Yes, in the H3 version, these were issues, so you made rules such as "no L4 heroes" and "no log heroes" and "no horde heroes" as was done with other maps also. Then these weren't issues.

I try to keep my rankings so that:
3's are funner than 2's (on your average game, even though there is no average game)
4's are funner than 3's
5's are funner than 4's
2's are funner than 1's
and 1's are funner than your average CD map.
Consider yourself lucky none of your maps have bugs. I spent over 40 hours on mine, and it has an unknown bug where it launches 1/4 of the time. It probably won't even get a 1 ... and will be on the rejected page. ;( If only there were a validate map option, I might be able to fix it.

I need to buy a modem (will be less than 2 days from now), so I can get online. After that, I should be available after 9:30pm Pacific time.
I have to visit my brother, or sneak on my father's computer just to get online and post.
All I have is MSNmessenger. Wiggums33@hotmail <-- add me to list if you have it.
For those we cannot get in the discussion group, I suppose we could have them email us back their input or post on this thread (as I have done).

Speaking of map sizes....
I am in the middle of an X-L, 6 player map called "Xanfas' Challenge". I say middle cause I have just over half of the map uncovered on day 4, week 4, month 5! God knows how long it will take to beat those 5 other AI players.... Only one gone completely so far.
I thought I was gonna "test" some of my Stronghold ideas on a larger map! (Turns out to be pretty straightforward as we expected).
One Lesson learned... dont mess with sea monsters!!
My 23rd level General and 22nd level Thief rules over the AI of course and the map is surprisingly fun to play.... But....
Nobody is gonna play X-L maps for ToH points unless some kind of incentive is offered for Big@ss maps... This thing is huge!!
Maybe different point rewards for different size maps? No, that wont work.... Some b@stards will claim to have played X-L when they really played Small
I think much of the multi gameplay will be on medium maps
if small maps are not allowed.
We all know that small maps can be designed in such a way that that they play longer (closed), and Medium/Large maps can be shortened (open). Maybe thats the future of Heroes 4 multi!?

if some people played hgXL and loved it (including me), some will yet play an XL map and love it. I say we include maps of all sizes, small to XL. (yet small but not be too small)
By the way, my computer and new 56k crap modem are back in action. Thanks to AOhelL.
