Poll Question: Would you have preferred (an ideal) Heroes II HD?
Don't think it as "given the actual conditions of Heroes III HD, wouldn't have been better Heroes II HD?", it's more an a priori question: if a year ago you have had the chance to make Ubi produce a graphic overhaul of a classic Heroes game (yes, I too would love to play Isles of Terra HD or Mandate of Heaven in Unreal Engine)-excluding I and IV for they would have little chance of commercial success- which one would you have chosen?*
Imagine that the HD edition would be a worthy one, not what we are getting. Now, given those ideal conditions, I for one would have preferred Heroes II. While Heroes III still feels like a contemporary game in many aspects, where everything is immediate (you click, the game reacts), the animations are fluid, the load times are imperceptible and even without the HD mod it looks fine enough, I think Heroes II hasn't aged so well. Its engine needs a serious improvement; my limited technical knowledge doesn't allow me to specify what the problems are, but it runs slow, animations feel broken, videos play improperly, and so on. For not talking about gameplay additions from HoMM III or IV (those caravans...) you may miss here .
So, even if Heroes III HD was what it should be, with all the expansions included, some features from mods, gorgeous redrawings and all you can dream from a remake come true, I would still think a Heroes II remake would be more needed. What do you think?
Please, don't just answer with a link to The Succession Wars mod

I see your point, but I don't think it is possible to make HoMM II in HD without its charm is lost in the process. That is why TSWM (sorry had to mention it) is so important a project for me. It takes the beloved features from HoMM III and add the amazing atmosphere from HoMM II. That is a great mix imo.

Same here. I am all for better graphics if possible, but what they did with H3 HD is like trying to fix the chiaroscuro in some old italian painting, then give to the model some modern shapes.

They just have to redraw it bigger so it can fit current resolutions. That's what I mean with "HD". I don't think it would lose any charm that way.

Yes, assuming that the art style would be preserved, unlike in the current HD remake. I'd also like them to add H5-style quick combat.
But as it is, the Succession Wars mod is the most promising project in the HoMM world - yes, more promising than H7.

It is also noticeable that Ashirox has 7 slots. You and me can guess the reason

While I certainly don't mind the idea of updating a game to new and better standard the fact is that 98% of 'HD' releases is made by outsourcing the work to cheap 3rd party developers to make a quick cash-in. And the goals set by the publishers rarely correspondent to the wishes of the already active community surrounding these games. The publishers especially - and even the 3rd party developers - simply don't share the same passion that we have for these old games as players, and it's really just business for them at the end of the day.
I think that cheep selling points that look good on paper is what the publishers care about the most. And besides, many will look at that hilarious (and quite funny) image that Sal posted and say it's an obvious improvement over the original and then start throwing cash at the screen. So there's that, too.

If it led to more content than just remade assets, a second expansion for example, like it happened to Age Of Empires II HD with The Forgotten, yeah, that would give me a reason to try it out. But a 1:1 remake with just updated graphics and music, I'm not really interested.
I grew up with that game and I've played it so much over all those years, I'm afraid that I'm now giving too much importance to the original graphics, the pixelly look, the way the original soundtrack sounds, even the midi version... without new content to compensate, I know I would spend the whole time nitpicking every detail, I may as well stick with the original, with my rose-tinted glasses and my childhood memories.

No I do not want a Heroes 2 HD. There was nothing wrong with the original graphics, I don't think they could recreate the charm and character of the game, it would spoil it.
Now I would be in favour of some extra content like new towns, creature's and campaign's but I doubt that would ever happen.
