Poll Question: Color-coding, do you like it or not ?
I had the idea of doing this poll while having a discussion with Kiryu133 here.
Personally I think color-coding is unnecessary and depreciates the units. I am firmly convinced if we had, say, the H2 or H3 designs fully rendered in 3D it would look totally awesome.
What do you think ?

while i don't think color-coding (at least not as extreme as the h6 ones) is overall a good idea there are good reasons for it. for example it helps smooth out the information taking place between player and game, allowing for faster decision-making since what creatures are yours are clear from a glance instead of forcing you to take time figuring out who creatures belong to. it's true that this barely if ever was a problem in pre-h5 due to 2d and set directions creatures were facing at all times (clumps still happened that blocked creature stack-numbers though). However i've had multiple problems immediately recnising units in h5 and it doesn't look to get better in h7 not a little due to creatures no longer having a set direction to face.
it's an easy way to give information and unless there is a better way to convey this information, it's kind of a necessary evil.

Colour-coding is a good thing, up to a point. H6 went far beyond that point. H7 looks to be heading in a better direction.
Colour-coding can strengthen a theme, but too much makes it monotone and too bright makes it neon. It might very well be better to code with dulled colours.
H7 Haven, with it's current looks is, IMO, a pretty decent effort.
For the military units, the basic units are coloured mostly with faded browns and dull greys, to reflect the leathers and metals of their armours and weapons. The upgraded units add a worn red to this, representing the livery of their lord. Overall, the effect, on me, is that all these units belong to a coherent army, but uniformness of the colours isn't bothersome, because they aren't bright and add to the idea that they are all warriors under the banner of the Wolf-lord.

I wouldn't be me, if I hadn't had mixed feelings
more explanation? ... ok
If color-coding is too strong, it's annoying, as it keeps everything monotonned, but at the same time, if you have just diferent colours everywhere, it's too chaotic, so I belive it must retain healthy mix. H3 also had "colour coding", but it was to far lesser extent, than Ashan factions, and this is basicaly what I mean.
Much more than colour coding tho, I'm annoyed by glow. Like the blue glow, or smoke if you will, that surrounds all Academy units ... why? What's the purpose of that smoke/glow? what does generate it?

I think color coding can help accessibility, and some limited color coding would actually be cool if handled like in Warcraft 3, where a unit's aura or part of their uniform changes to align with the player's color rather than just being a static color forever
Heroes 5 had built in support for that, but only used it on heroes and flags IIRC
Heroes 6's approach took this idea into the realm of ridiculous parody (thanks again for the purple minotaurs, Ubi) and should never be spoken of again lol

I've been looking the H3 units over again.
Guess what, these are colourcoded as well. It's just a lot more subtle. And it's broken by a few who don't follow the trend.
Case in Point:
Castle: Blue and White(of house Griffinheart) and metalic
Tower: Red, Blue and Gold
Rampart: Brown, Green and White
Fortress: Green, Brown and Blue
Stronghold: Green, Brown and Grey
Inferno: Red, Black and Yellow
Necropolis: Grey, Black and White (monochrome)
Dungeon: Brown, Red and Green
Only Conflux is a rainbow, but they have to represent all elements, which all have their own colours associated with them.

Right, I may have been a bit hasty in my opening post. I hope people understand the poll anyway.
Then I'd say in H3 was very well done and in H6 was a complete catastrophe.

I chose Mixed...like others have said their should be limits.
As a rookie creating H5 maps I started out basically doing the H6 thing (of course units were default) but I quickly discovered blanket colors became quite tiresome.
I now far prefer diversity of unit color with any specialized color schemes possibly limited to faction specific objects. Even then it's not very important but is it an aid to players I think. Of course, whether the aid is good or bad will always be personal preference.

You might want to edit your opening post a bit then. It helps avoid misunderstanding.
But I agree with your gist that H3 was a better effort due to it's subtlety. And while I don't think H6 a complete disaster, I agree the Neon Monotony hurt the effort greatly.

The only way to do this would be to ask a moderator to edit it for me, since the poll is started I cannot edit it myself anymore (don't you know this?).

As mention before, colour coding is good if not overused.
H6 colour coding was way to much, every upgraded creature looked like freaking elementals!
Thank god H7 colour coding is good.

Keep dreaming...
I don't like colour-coding, because I do not like forcing a colour upon a creature just because it belongs to a certain faction. Like purple Minotaur and Manticore.
