I wouldnt call most of what Michael Jackson does Rock, at least not primarily, much more influanced by Soul and Motown. Rock itself started as pop music of its day anyway, though.

MJ is...funk. Pop. Quality pop, but pop. I am not a poser, and I enjoy MJ ( few songs here and there , no full albums), but I know what Rock is and excuse me, but MJ isn't rock.

It's not about the guitars playing in MJ's.music, but overall drive and composition structure. This is why it's so easy to convert it to a "metal cover" which are popular in the internet nowadays. Try not to look over genres, this is not professional. They are invented by journalists. Look over the musical tropes used.
The same can be said about some old game OST's, such as Doom or certain Nintendo games. These songs are highly influenced by rock cliches, and are in fact rock if played on proper instruments with properly set sound. You cannot say the same about The Prodigy or Nine Inch Nails in general, yet they use guitar samples often and sometimes even have songs built on rock music standards.

i consider nin and the prodigy as industrial. it would be impractical to not use genre's on an ipod.

Prodigy is bigbeat to be precise, but again, it's a tag/genre <=> journalist term.

if i categorized everything precisely, i'd be hard-pressed to play a bunch of similar music while i drive around screaming at everybody in my way and waving my AK around. i'd have to make multiple playlists to make up for it. my playlists have always followed a theme; not by music alone. doing things the way you suggest would screw up my whole system, orzie. i can't keep picking up the ipod to change something, i need that hand for the AK; the other for gesturing wildly and steering expertly.

/off-topic:
you're telling me. i have to deal with static-ridden music every time it rains. snows up the speakers in my car somehow. it doesn't help that my ipod uses radio stations, which gives it more static. but i've learned to tune the static out, mostly. sometimes are worse than others. anyone riding with me can't hear anything but static, though. which sucks more, because i like to drive with the music at max volume. i would install speakers and a better system worth a damn, but i can't even afford to replace the brakes.

In popular music (and I use the term in its technical, broadest sense) the genre is mostly determined by "the sound" and stylish choices in contrast to structural similarities. In terms of structure, most of early Rock is just Blues with a little tinkering, so is a lot of Big Band music, yet we call them Swing. MJ's sound and especially vocals is heavily influanced by 70's black music, there is a pop-rock polish to it for sure, but I wouldnt call it sufficent enough when it comes to the final sound, and as I said, it is the sound that is overwhelmingly definitive:

Can't believe there's a rock thread with the mention of bloody Michael Jackson. Get out of here. Things that need to be mentioned are Led Zepplin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep and so on.
Pink Floyd I have tattoed on my arm, as well as Judas Priest so I am pretty into my rock music haha.

Pfft. What about Pantera, Slayer, Nile, Misery Index? Try to listen something more than classics known to everyone before calling yourself a rock fan.

It doesn't have to do anything with classics vs. New stuff. The point is that people listen to a bunch of world-known bands and try to pose themselves as rock fans. The bands listed by the previous orator are loved as well by people who don't love rock in general.
Just got tired of fanboys who know only Nirvana when we speak about grunge, or only Cannibal Corpse if we speak about brutal death metal. When you have a wider list of artists, you know more about music and stylistic cliches.
