The factions within this setting should get slight to big alterations. There have been some attempts, and some recent, to change the idea of the holy-human-faction and I think it is a good idea because this faction can not really be improved that much any more. I think all relevant ideas in it, both storywise and creaturewise, have been done in HoMM. So it being changed would be a certain step in the setting changing for me. Next question would be placing of factions and there COULD be changes as well. I think the desert academy is something that deserves a change again. And where to? I've long had this idea that the stereotype goodie-good Knight faction could be scraped altogether and replaced with the Wizard faction, with a few creatures transferring to it. Perhaps a not-so-good Knight/Light faction based on fallen Knights/Angels and religious fanaticism, like HotA:s planned Cathedral faction, could take its place. Maybe the setting could be a realm in decline (for whatever reason) that used to be ruled by a group of Wizards, now being eroded by the rise of fanatics (Cathedral), practisers of banned magic (Warlocks), the forces of nature (Sorceresses) explorers and bog-dwellers (Fortress) etc.

What we need to get back to, most of all, is the idea that factions should be based on themes and not on races. Not only would this make the setting more interesting and less generic, it would also give map makers more freedom when creating scenarios set somewhere else.

I agree, but where was Academy in H4?
That's a genuine question. I have no idea.
Though, judging from past events, the wizards like to live in harsh environments. I doubt they'd hang out in a grassland or something like that. It'd be nice though.

Academy in H3/4 was in snow, but in H2 was in roughlands or desert, so there's some validity there for them being in desert in H5/6/7
