The solution for normal games is formation, keeping your tanks in front of your spellcasting hero or units. Almost all the spells require LOS. The only common damage spell i'm running into that ignores LOS is poison, and that's a real nasty one. It's as if those mages who cast it are still smacking me from the grave, every turn.
In high level campaign scenarios, your spellcaster should have combat skills. If the scenario is filled with Angels and Demons then you must have enough experience to have a lot of hit points and combat/defense/magic resist.
And there's always spells like Martyr to absorb some blows for ya.

a magic hero that knows spells who damage directly the enemy heroes can sometimes be useless against a hero who has combat skill with magic resistenge because you can't cast spells on him! A solution to that problem could be to become a guildmaster who ignores 2/3 of heroes magic resistence
