Does those 'Mages' appear in Silmarillion? I have never read any LotR world books   I know they aren't my style (too slow). I think i could start whit Silmarillion one day maybe. In LotR movies I often think: What happened before? Story of Sauron interest me, is it told any better in stories before Hobbit? What are these Mages anyway, some sort spirit guardians or.. they are not humans thats for sure..

In this days standards are these books good? I have respect what these books started and many consider them as masterpieces even today. Does the books make you love the world, might be my guestion.

Sauron was merely a servant of the Dark Enemy, Morgoth, who was a superior being, like a god. But Sauron was also a Maiar, like the Wizards, who were servants of the other gods, and God (Eru Iluvatar), only that Sauron was capable of a lot of destruction and corruption even with no Rings. Especially corruption.

He corrupted the Men and Dwarves with the Rings of Power. The Elves still had their Rings, but he made the One Ring to bind them all.

If you find the books slow, I do not recmmoend Silmarillion, it's like reading history, philosophy and religion combined. I loved it and the Mages and the One Ring is really the end of known history, Silmarillion goes waaaaay back.

The books make me feel excellent and forget my angst for the hours when I was a teenager reading. And I find them better and better as I grew older.

The silmarillion has many answers. About world creation, the nature of the istari, sauron's backstory and so on.

The Silmarillion is awesome, albeit heavy at some parts (I'm looking at you, Of Beleriand and its Realms ).

I'd recommend to read The Hobbit and LotR first though.

Thanks from the advises

Silmarillion later then...

What you guys think, should Jackson make movie/s about Silmarillion too? If I remember correctly he did not get permisson to do that because owners of the books did not approve on Jackson view of the middle earth.

I doubt it will ever come, tough money can make wonders, ho ho hoo.

Yeah, but Middle Earth was just a part of the big picture. That's quite possible.

Silmarillion is like the Tolkien's Bible, and Hobbit and LoTR merely cover the end of known history.

Think of Middle Earth, as I don't know, our Earth, only more mythological/fantasy, mortals for the most part, and then there is the place where Gods and the Maiar (like angels) are,and where Elves go since they cannot die like Humans. To the West of Middle Earth.

Humans used to live longer too but they became corrupted, as did Dwarves, and Elves that became Orcs. That was the work of the big bad dog, Morgoth, the Dark Enemy, and his apprentice, fallen Maiar Sauron, the Dark Lord.

And the five Wizards were sent to stop Sauron by Eru and the good Gods.

Silmarillion goes back to the creation of world, and all of history, divided into First Age, Second Age, Third Age. And LOTR ends with  start of the Fourth Age, the Age of Man.

The title refers to the main conflict that set things in motion: Morgoth, formerly Melkor, stole the three Silmarils, which were very powerful life-giving and pure sustaining jewels and such, and ever since, Humans and Elves alike fought with Morgoth's creatures (like dragons, and Balrogs) to get them back.

Tolkien's favorite romance though was not Aragorn and Arwen, they were like a shadow of Beren and Luthien. Beren was a mortal man, but Luthien was an immortal Elf, they were still lovers, and their union led much later to further Alliances between Men and Elves and even Dwarves, Ents, and obviously Hobbits, as we see in the Hobbit and LOTR.

But many Men and Dwarves became corrupted by Sauron's rings, their strong Kingdoms faded, while the Elves weren't corrupted but they were still weaker than Sauron with the One Ring, and not united. The woodelves of Legolas and his Dad liked the underground, for instance.

And until the Master Ring was destroyed in the fires it was forged, Sauron still could very well rebuild his army of Orcs, some of whom were forced to follow the orders of cruel superiors, and the Nine, of course spearheaded by his main general, the Witch-King of Angmar, and humans from the far East and the South, that served him.

And Smaug was the last Dragon left.

And I am so mad PJ left out Bombadil and the whole segment before Bree. I LOVED that part, it was so fantastical and yet even gritty at times.

ah. here is another take on that. to have smaug be the last dragon is depressing as snow. i'd rather he not be the last, personally. good guys need monsters to fear, in fantasy. or else it becomes very, very boring.

Yeah man.

Well, all the Dragons were slain by the time the Hobbit happened. so meh. If you want more dragons, read Silmarillion. There ain't gonna be no movie.

He should stay away from the Middle-Earth. LotR was great, the Hobbit went from good to awful. No need to ruin the Silmarillion too

Plus adapting Simlarillion would be like adapting a collection of Greek myths...or Norse... with all the gods, demigods, monsters etc

In one film, or two, or three, impossible.

Because they weren't Hobbit movies. They were Lord of the Rings version 2.0.

Yeah, and I would say that they failed at both. He should have stuck to the Hobbit for the, you know, THE HOBBIT trilogy. The first is the only one I can say I really like.

And LMAO Salamandre , theoretically correct... and practically too.
