Even if that is true he would have known Palpatine would take advantage of any weakness Windu showed. Also after he cuts his hand off he makes no attempt to save him.

I ascribe it to bad writing, Palpatine looked as if he was about to die, so I don't think Anakin would've assumed that good ol' Sheev was bluffing.

Yeah, to me it felt like he wanted Anakin to attack Windu so he could turn him into his apprentice easier... and also to be sure that Windu was finished

And when I first watched the film, I did not expect Cosingua Palpatine's awesome "POWER!" line and how he owned Sam L. Jackson's Jedi.

But when Palpatine is quite obviously realing up to shock Windu Anakin still sits and does nothing. It is not like he did not have time, as he had about the same amount of time as when he cut Windu's hand off to save Sheev.

He might have improvised but the idea of planning Anakin's fall like that.. Let's just say it would be a very bad plan. There was no guarantee that Anakin would show up and definitely not in a dramatic moment like that. Palpatine's faked wimpiness in front on Anakin was obvious but that would not have worked if Anakin was present with the other 2 jedi. Hell, I'm surprised Anakin didn't try to kill him after learning that he didn't actually know how to save Padme.

Well, it was the filmmakers' doing. They could've had 100 other reasons and methods for Anakin to become Darth Vader, but they took this route.

I watched the new generation of this family story today, and after initial confusion I'm now impressed!

Kyli Ren gave a splendid presentation of the post(?) Sith galaxy situation while his family situation is, no doubt, half the key to understanding this new triology.

The great new heroine Rey's family on the other hand remained unknown but there's enough hints for concluding that she's the other half of the key... Because surely she inherited her skills with technology (and the force) from a grandfather who built a diplomat robot and pod racer as a kid.

Great symbolism in her name too, Rey as in Regina (Roy-al blood somewhere?) and as in a Ray of the light (side)...

Learning more about her parents and childhood would probably answer the question of this thread. I dislike that it's 2 years until the next movie.

And with that said, it's time for the second topic of the thread:

The way I have understood these things is that:

Siths become increasingly evil because they use the dark side of the force.

Gandalf the Gray (only a Sith deals in absolutes) said when Frodo offered him the Ring:

"Don't tempt me Frodo! I dare not take it. Not even to keep it safe. Understand Frodo, I would use this Ring from a desire to do good. But through me, it would wield a power too great and terrible to imagine."

I think its a relevant comparison. The dark lord Sauron (or Morgoth in Silmarillion) IS the dark force, while dark lord Sidious merely USES the dark force.

Wizard Gandalf USING the Ring would be like Darth Gandalf USING the dark side of the force.

Anakin had a desire to do good (to save his loved ones), but as soon as Darth Sidious (not Frodo ) successfully tempted him to use the dark side, that dark side reinforced his hate and strength so that he became Darth Vader - evil.

Finally he broke free from the grip of the dark side and ended the Sith rule and died as Anakin. Because he never became completely dark/evil - Luke sensed light in him during their duel.

One might say that unlike Frodo who actually failed when he declared the Ring to be his own and was accidentally saved by Gollum,  Anakin never fully gave in to the dark power and could save himself.

So, users of the dark side are evil because they are on a path that is bound to make them cause death and destruction to others. They are ruled by selfishness and aggressive passions that they only have partial control over. Additionally to that magical explanation theres also social and psychological processes, i.e. that the ideology, culture and relations of the Sith, and of the Empire, is encouraging brutality and strong hierarchy, and dictatorship. Such things make ordinary men monsters as seen in any earthly war.

Users of the light side on the other hand are good because they are on a path where progress comes from using the force as the life-force of the universe. Consequently, they must seek harmony, understanding and compassion. Additionally, the official values of the Jedi, and the Republic, encourage peace and plurality headed by councils. Every Jedi may not always be the perfect knight, but unlike the Sith they are good enough because even in a fight they remain in control over their actions, always making them reasonably capable to follow their way which is to take care of not only themselves, but also to take care of others.

Happy new year!

Since in the real world there is no such Force anyway, I like escapism and I like reading posts like that.

Happy new year!

Then it's good to know that you won't have to wait that long!

Episode VIII is scheduled for may 2017, so just one year and less than half a dozen months. And we do get a snack in between, too, with the release of Rogue One during the christmas season at the end of this year.

Thanks, that news was a good way to make this a happy new year!

And escapism rocks, good thread, interesting idea to compare Star wars and LotR.
It has been good weekends  watching movies from both series
