Star Trek discussion
Any Trekkies/Trekkers here willing to discuss? Of course I am not referring to jar jar Star Trek.
Today is the 21st anniversary of my second favorite series, Voyager!
My favorite is still the Original, TNG is overrated from my point of view, more quality than quantity is my principle, and it had a rather large number of episodes and took a long time for it to take off...
I could only "get into" Voyager from the others. Janeway of course is my second favorite after Kirk.
And I like the first six movies a lot... well, some more than others, but Shatner, Nimoy and Kelley along with the supporting cast and the villains really made them work for me.

Never much got into Voyager. The last one I really was invested in was the rather unappreciated Deep Space Nine.
For me TNG will always be the pinnacle of Star Trek.

I can understand why TNG has the highest ratings with its dynamite cast, but I enjoyed DSN at least just as much. I'm not a big fan of episodic shows. I like a continual story, and DSN does this more than TNG. Quark started out kind of annoying but his story (and his family) turned out to be really interesting.
I hope they do a good job with the upcoming Star Trek series. Enterprise was a good show but distinctly lacked a Star Trek flavor.

So, Corribus, would you recommend DS9? Never watched much of that, while I watched a good amount of TNG and yes even Enterprise.

I loved DS9. Not as much as TNG but they are very different shows. I believe you can stream the whole series on Netflix. Blizz is right that DS9 is more serialized than TNG, so given that television has moved more in that direction in the decades since it was aired, it would probably be more appreciated these days.

Never been much into Star Trek. Played the first Elite Force video game, and watched one of the New Generation movies.
A good Sci-fi, but I prefer more epicness in my space operas, which IMO Star Trek is lacking.
Borg are an awesome concept though.

I prefer the more emotional, puzzling and existentialist sci-fi.
But I do like more action-oriented space epic films too, I don't have to dislike one style to like the other.
I agree about the Borg.

It's strange, but what I missed in DSN were the carpeted hallways The Cardassian DSN station is so damn homely.
I think TNG and DSN are equals. Voyager is on my bucket list.

Well, to each their own.
I guess all the praise to TNG and Picard left me cold, especially in the early seasons that were not nearly as great as the show was made out to be.
I went into Voyager with little expectations and liked it a lot more.
And as for films, I only saw the 6 TOS crew films, as I mentioned in the first post and the Jar jar films. The first one was promising, the second one was just not Star Trek imo and don't think I'll bother with the first.
So far, I'd rank them: TOS, VOY, TNG, ENT.
Let's see if I get around to seeing more or preferrably all of DS9.
Apparently there was an animated show in the days betwen TOS and The Motion Picture with most of the TOS crew, never saw it.
And before deciding on the film, in the 70's they planned a new series, Phase II, with most of the original crew minus Spock, and with Decker and Ilia and a new Vulcan, Xon.

same here. i've always been more into star wars than star trek. star trek never "wow"ed me like star wars did.
and +1 on the borg(which i think were the most interesting/cool concept in the shows i watched). any cyborgs that travel in a space cube are cool in my book. it's like they traveled in a spaceship version of the "hellraiser" cube. come to think of it, their look and outfits were pretty similar to the cenobytes themselves, minus the machinery. they appeared to be cyborg cenobytes, and not just cyborgs. lots of dark themes/intricate designs(like giger or hodi).

Patrick Stewart played a great captain, but sometimes I think he gets too much credit, because TNG simply wouldn't be TNG without the other excellent characters: Will Riker, the android, the empath, the klingon, and the ginger. The weak link imo (relatively speaking) was the Chief Engineer, Geordi, who wasn't as exciting as the other characters. I actually think I might like William Riker a little bit more than Jean Luc, awesome captain though he was. Riker is quite the gentleman badass.
Deep Space Nine was bold enough to try things that Next Generation just scratched the surface of. You got more exposure to the civilian life in the Star Trek Universe on the space station than you did on the Enterprise. DSN was also ambitious enough to heavily explore the world religions of the Star Trek universe, which might have been interesting, except the writers did a pretty mediocre job at it. Lots of mystic/clergy characters that behaved like caricatures and defaulted to cliches, and I often found myself bored on any episodes relating to The Prophets and waiting for it to be over. Still, great cast and I love the greater fluidity in the plot line, which is the direction that shows seem to have gone. My view is that - generally speaking - as the quality of movies has declined, the quality of shows has increased.
Star Trek isn't too much of an "epic" type of show. It has a heavy focus on character development, mysteries, and intrigue, which I like quite a lot. Another fantastic show that was airing at the same time as Deep Space Nine was Babylon 5. Without being short on plenty of dialogue and intrigue itself, Straczynski's universe is a little bit more of a space battle epic similar to Star Wars. I loved it enough that I would put it right beside the other two.

The movies are more epic in scale than the shows, though I still prefer the shows by a slight margin to the best movies, which I consider to be:
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and Star Trek III: The Search for Spock combined, especially thanks to the themes discussed, the characters and last but not least the action, and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.
Haven't seen any of the TNG ones though, and I rank 2009 Star Trek, The Final Frontier (V), The Motion Picture (I) and The Voyage Home (IV) below those three, and Into Darkness last.
Paraphrasing from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan: How we face death is at least as important as how we face life. That's good advice. Something to build upon.
This popped into my mind following the recent "famous deaths".

So if the Star Trek TNG crew played HoMM3, which towns would they pick?
How about TOS?

knights, obviously. borg would be forge.
who would be the rest?
don't remember any other factions in the show. romulans(sp?), i think? whatever race commander wharf(sp?) was, too.
...unless you mean the actors/actresses themselves. at which point i'd have no idea at all.

Well obviously Stornghold would be Worf's pick. I think Data would play Inferno because of all the math involved in optimizing demon farming.
I think doctor Beverly would probably lean towards Rampart.
What would suit Picard, Geordie, Riker and Troi?

Someone suggested Vulcans are Elves and Klingons are Orcs. But that doesn't fit entirely with HoMM.
I thought the Romulans should be Dungeon and Klingons in their updated form more like Inferno than Stronghold.
And yes I'll say it again that TNG failed to make a great impression on me. And they even ripped the theme song off of The Motion Picture. it's fine if others like it best but don't expect me to.
Oh and I like Data, Worf and Beverly Crusher from TNG more than Picard and Riker and LaForge.
And I wish Denise Crosby was around longer.
D. Troi was annoying really, Sirtis was pretty.
