Strange mouse icon problem HoMM3 Complete
Ok, so my son and I both play HoMM3 Complete, the version that came from GOG, against each other. (for those who've seen my other posts, I gave up on getting the old HoMM3 from the Millenum Edition CDs to work with TCP/IP long ago, and went with the GOG version)
A few weeks ago, he started having issues with a vanishing mouse. I am not having any such issues.
His Computer:
- Windows 7 Home
- AMD Radeon R7 250E with latest Crimson Drivers
- Pentium G3220 CPU
- 4GB RAM
My Computer:
- Windows 7 Professional
- AMD Radeon R9 285 with latest Crimson Drivers
- Core i5-4460
- 8GB RAM
Both of our Radeons are set to use GPU scaling, and to preserve aspect ratio.
For whatever reason, when the main title screen comes up, his mouse tends to disappear if moving slowly, leaving an irregular trail of tiny black dots. If moving faster, sometimes it leaves copies of the mouse icon littered about, and if moving very fast, the mouse is visible.
Also, if moving around the right-side menu options, (New Game, Quit, etc) the mouse is visible UNLESS there's a dialog up (ie: are you sure you want to quit, etc)
Finally, once we get past that screen, and try to choose a scenario, etc., the mouse is like it is on the main splash screen no matter where you go: visible if you move VERY fast, scattered trail of dots if you move slow.
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game to no avail. I'm at a loss as to what to do. Nothing else seems to be giving him any problems.
Has anyone run into this before? Any suggestions?

I recall I ran into something similar once, it never appeared with the HD mod which I would recommend to install anyway (you can set resolution in the launcher, then create HD.exe), try that and let us know.
Ps. You know Hota?

I did not know of HotA until now, thanks for the pointer!
I think I've used the HD mod (accidentally) on my previous PC, and ran into some odd issues.
What's really baffling to me is that, until about a month or so ago, it worked absolutely fine. I don't get why it's misbehaving now...

In reality, it also depends on whatever else has been done on the PC in question. Something as silly as a Windows update or a program that has been installed and is running in the background might interfere. Hardware acceleration settings might cause it, too.

Which issues did you have with HD mod? I never had any, maybe you did a bad install? You should definitely use it, you will be amazed by the extra features it offers.

Maurice,
Well, Windows updates have happened - but also happened to my PC. Can't say for sure if anything else has been installed since, other than maybe a game. Wish I'd kept more careful track of what's been installed when.
Galaad - to be honest, it happened some time ago, and on my previous PC, so I can't remember for certain what issues I'd had. They weren't crippling or anything, as best as I can recall. Ultimately, next time my son's here, I'll give the HD Mod a shot if I don't come up with anything else in the interim. I guess I'm trying to work backwards, so to speak - get back to where I was before trying something new.

If it's a PC you don't use very often, you could also try and perform a Windows system restore, to a restore point which was made around the time the issues started to appear.

Haven't tried the restore trick yet . . but, as I plan to eventually upgrade it to Windows 10 anyway, do you think it might be a good idea to try that, or would that entail more risk?

DON'T!
Install HD Mod and see if it corrects it. You can still set the original resolution from the launcher if you prefer it.

All,
Well, my son had moved on to playing other games for a while, and eventually, I was planning on upgrading to Windows 10 anyway, especially as the deadline for the free upgrade approaches.
HOWEVER, last Thursday (May 12), I noticed there were something on the order of 19 updates available for Windows 7 on his system. So, I installed them, still thinking that after this weekend, I'd upgrade his system to Windows 10.
Well, lo and behold, the strange mouse issues have vanished. No idea which update did it or why, but, the problem seems to be cured.

Allow me to amend that. It's mostly gone. Seems to come back on occasion, but a reboot tends to fix the problem, or sometimes simply quitting HoMM3 and restarting it.
Odd, but still better than the previous situation where the problem was always there and made the game impossible to play.
