Wishful Thinking

If you could add something to H3 that made the game more interesting...more fun, what would that be?

I'm not talking about stat tweaks or anything technical, but something more "flavorful" (for lack of a better term).

A couple of things come to mind for me:

The ability to make or break alliances in-game. I sometimes play with an ally, and they can be most frustrating (what else is new, I know). They can be totally useless, or with the right heroes and map conditions, a powerhouse. I just think it would be fun to be able to make an ally in-game (or backstab the one you already have)

Another concerns the resource stockpiles (Imp caches, Methuselah stores, etc). After raiding a certain number of each, you tick the owners off enough to get a much stronger reaction than the normal guards. For example, after raiding X number of Imp Caches, on the next one you get a random mix of Inferno creatures that could go all the way up to Arch-devils (level related, of course). Would add a bit of uncertainty (and higher rewards if you wanted) to an otherwise predictable situation.

So what's been on your wish-list?

new graphic design, especially adventure map, more like Heroes2/Palm Kingdoms3 style
more towns and creatures
more spells
more resource types (btw how many of them and what type  should be in your opinion?)
more players' colours
maybe weather alike Panzer General 1
prolonged building time of structures
multileveled undergrounds
fog of war
RTS in battle like Total War games

There is a lot of Era mods about 100. You have new obiects new functions new cities. Era is powerful game rebuilder.

The possibility of the game to continue after normal game play. In other games, taking over the enemy kingdom may only be the first step in creating your own.. here the game ends once you finally succeed. I'd like to be an actual ruler too, not only a conquer in war.

Combination of Might and Magic with HoMM, but more in the sense that you can command large armies in Might and Magic style (reanimate doesn't count ). I guess it'd require huge resources from the computer though.

I wish there was a deeper level to Kingdom development, one that put more emphasis on choice by opening more interactions and possibilities.

Now that would really add some interesting possibilities. Think fire-based attacks getting a boost in lava country during the summer, or conversely, ice-based attacks during the winter in Tower lands.

Weather affecting individual creature abilities would tie in nicely with weather, as well. Movement abilities would likewise get affected (slogging through swamps during the summer rains...eek)

Have the dragons with traditional D & D elemental attacks (besides the Rust Dragon acid breath) that can get stronger or weaker depending on terrain/weather.

Kingdom with a capital K...a mod?

Especially in campaign play...something more varied rather than a straight-line story development.

Let's not make H3 more like Civ, in which you can develop your empire as much as you want in very different ways. H3 is so much fun because you run around with heroes leading armies. I think some game mechanics could enhance that, for example:
Dismissing a unit from a hero will place it on the map where you leave it. It becomes neutral, so it will have to be fought by anybody including yourself before you can pass it again. Imagine the possibilities: harvesting Faerie Dragons from their dwellings and dropping them in front of your enemies' castles!
A dismissed hero will become a neutral AI player without a town. It will run around looking for units from dwellings, a tavern (to be hired there for the rest of the week), maybe even a city if it thinks it might be able to capture it. This would mean the neutral hero needs gold for the creatures it buys: maybe it can pick up some, or it will have some basic income?
Magic heroes could be improved with some unique level 6 spells only magic heroes can acquire, as if only they have the native skill to master these level 6 spells.
In generel, a graphical remake would be awesome. Still 2D, but everything unique and smoothly animated. For example: different body parts for every creature (I dislike angels have the same arms as devils, for example).

Goes into the realm of 4X, which people might not appreciate.

Yes, but did that game work like that with dismissing heroes and creatures? I can't remember, I didn't like the game that much...

I only remember the neutral creatures could wander towards you and attack in certain cases.

If you leave creatures on the map, they are also an army only without a hero. That army is still under your control and it can roam and attack other armies but without a hero you could not capture towns or mines. That is though different from dismissing armies, which has the same effect as in the older games.

And as far as I know, neutral heroes did exist in Heroes IV and you were also able to put them in custom maps, or to decide if the creatures around the map could attack your armies or stand still.

And magic heroes from each town have a unique school and they have to level up until they acquire the maximum skill in order to learn the level 5 spell. (I know, that's not exactly what you asked for).

As DD says, things at least ~50% similar to what you describe (unit without heroes (but not neutral), neutral heroes (but not due to being dismissed), unique and powerful spells for magic heroes (or at least require way more than 3 levels in wisdom and only grants you one school) and new graphics (not sure if that's the style you meant though). Sadly HoMM IV also have many things I imagine (not knowing you) you wouldn't like. I e.g. don't like that they removed the removed the prim. skills of the heroes and made it all secondary skill based. That gives me the impression that perhaps they didn't know their own game that well, which is a bit much to say I admit.

I'd like to see some aspects of "immersion". For example I don't like that a gog can harm a fire elemental by throwing fire bolts at it. This would bring us to stats again, but I don't want to change them, I just want to add new categories, like new resistances for each creature or different attack types. Actually I don't think that a heavy armored crusader would have much of a benefit over a peasant if hit by a lightning bolt. All in all I'd like a way more dynamic system concerning dealing of damage and creature stats in general.

H2-style artwork would be nice (which is why I'm excited about Succession Wars). Also, proper support for higher resolutions, so instead of zooming out, the map would be rendered in better detail, and with better sprites than Ubi's terrible H3 HD. It would also be good if the random map generator had more options (number of neutral towns, etc).
As for actual gameplay, I wouldn't want to tweak it much, except maybe to make high-level heroes more powerful, to encourage building up one or two heroes instead of hiring many.

Little tweaks like that are what I'm talking about. Carrying that a bit further...elemental creatures (or creatures that use an elemental attack like Thunderbirds, for example) should be immune to their innate element but vulnerable to the opposite. I know that was done for some creatures like Efreet, Ice Elementals, etc, but many were missed...

They did that in the M&M series, but I think they went too far with it, or at least they should have made sure that most unit beyond the most basic ones had dual or triple damage types. As it is now, monsters only have one damage type, meaning some very low level monsters (e.g. a wraith) is completely immune to blue dragon attacks, which is supposed to be one of the more powerful enemies.

There was an old Sega Genesis game back in the day called Master of Monsters. Not only was there specific vulnerabilities in creature vs creature, but terrain and time of day factored in.

Probably most of that is over-the-top for H3, but what they did was increased/decreased attk/def depending on the situation. Perhaps something like that might work better than strictly elemental resistances/vulnerabilities....

Four seasons is also probably a bit much, so maybe two seasons, fair and...not so fair

I will add more RPG elements and allow the game to not be so much strategy-oriented, but RPG, like the ability to create hybrid heroes that aren't Ranger, or Knight or whatever, no need to have a town to exist, more quests, like not just a seer's hut but kind of like in MMOs, but randomly generated, based on the map, sometimes involving killing creatures and stuff.

I really like the concept of the game, but once you play through it a couple of times, it doesn't feel like a magical adventure anymore, but like a bunch of numbers and words - trying to accumulate more units, choosing specific skills, there is basically no room for improvising, and that's why Heroes 3 has become boring for me, I love the game, I grew up with it, but I can't make myself play it more than a couple of hours every year.
