In one of my old jobs, I used to bring back at least 4 meters of perfectly good, but discarded 3-wire electrical copper cable daily.

Yeah, it's true.
There was a complete renovation of a trade school dorm that I studied at the time. and as part of our internship, let's call it that for a lack of a better term, we got to partake in said renovation. us jackasses were in charge of plastering, painting and wallpapering. There were a crew of 2 electrical dudes who were in charge of replacing the wiring and other electric junk. Biggest hauls of said copper cabling came when they replaced the ceiling lights, because the height of the ceiling was a bit more than 2 meters. They would pull the cable all the way down to the ground, and when it came to work, they cut the whole thing, except for about 10-15 centimeters near the ceiling, just enough to connect the lamps. same on other electrical. Those guys wasted cable like there was no tommorrow(all funded by the EU, so why the bleep not)
I've also got stuff like linoleum, and other materials during that time. The copper went straight to a recycling thing specialising in metals (you know, those things that pay you for your recyclable junk.) Along with the copper I scavenged from old soviet TV sets, I've made about 200 euros.
All it took was an agreement with my teachers, that I can take the stuff.

cool. it's always nice when you can turn a profit(or profit otherwise) from working somewhere. speaking of:
i once coerced a nighttime manager of a hardees(fast-food chicken and burger joint) to let me leave with the food they were going to throw away(which they do every day, for evil capitalist reasons), while i was employed there. i left with 100 pieces of fried chicken, 2 large containers of peach cobbler, 2 large containers of soft-serve vanilla ice cream(for the cobbler), 2 large containers of mashed potatoes, a bag full of fried apple pies, a bag full of french fries, and a bunch of smaller containers of gravy for the mashed potatoes... all for free. that whole haul would have cost well over 100 dollars, had i had to pay for it.
