If you need any unit stat info from the second game I can probably help. I’ve played through a few maps with every faction just to see what all the differences were between the units.

I managed to beat H2 on the GBC:
My Mephala:
Level 19 is the maximum. I decided to make a might hero because magic is useless. We have the same spells as in Heroes 1, so it's hard to find something good at lower guild levels, and they don't transfer to the next scenarios (but artifacts do!). I also didn't buy a spellbook and I didn't learn wisdom to not waste slots (there are only 8 for artifacts and 6 for secondary skills).
Other important thoughts for campaign:
- Don't start the campaign with Clancy! He's bugged and you won't be able to beat the fourth mission. One of the computer players in this mission also plays as Clancy so if we beat him, the game thinks we have lost our main hero (because the enemy Clancy lost).
- Always have one save from the previous scenario! Missions can't be restarted! So if you run into a bug, you won't be able to start over. The only way is to load the previous scenario (it's best to always have one save before the last battle).
And not important:
- Animations in battles are too slow. It's good to speed them up with an emulator. With RetroArch, all you have to do is press the spacebar.
- It is said that the game is a mix of H1-3 but I think the Fizbin of Misfortune graphic is from Heroes 4.
- Negative luck works!
- A hero without a book in the castle can see the spells in the mage guild.
- To learn spells you need to click on the mage guild building. If you visit the castle and don't click on the guild, you won't learn the spells!
- It's impossible to dismiss creatures!
- You can only change the positions of units in castle or when trading with another hero. The same goes for splitting them.
- I never came across the Dimension Gate spell. So I don't know if it was implemented.
- A hero can't have two copies of the same artifact. If he acquires a copy of an artifact he already owns, one of the artifacts will disappear.
- Enemy heroes can live without a castle forever. The rule: "7 days to get a castle" doesn't work for them. I haven't checked whether this also applies to our own heroes but it's very likely.
Unique map buildings I came across:
- Sphinx - fighting mummies for resources.
- Demon's Cave - fighting flying demons for gold or an artifact.
There are also unique artifacts but they all have boring bonuses for stats. Almost all unit portraits are from H3 (the demon has wings added, lol). The Rogue and the Ghost are from H1, the Mummy is from H2.
The game is much better than Ubisoft's Heroes, which is not surprising.

This was actually my first foray into the HOMM series. Played this one before the pc version actually.
The interface here is a bit cumbersome IMHO by comparison but I reckon thats to be expected
