Times of trouble (ooc)

The land of Helioth is in turmoil.  Fifty years ago the god wars ended, leaving many of the gods dead.   Those that survived were very weakened.  Magic became chaotic, and priest would not always get the spells they asked for.  Several new factions arose from the ashes of a decimated world.

The Knights of the true Tyr.  Lead by the High Priest in the kingdom of Fairrun, the north most kingdom, they seek to stamp out all remaining magic users and creatures not human.. even Elf and Dwarves.  Somehow the High Priest is able to use his divine magic with no issue.

The red cloaks - Once great magic users, they have had to find another way to use their spells.. and they found it.  Blood magic.  Using blood they cut down on the chance of wild magic (any mage can do the same, but blood is needed so remember this). They are located to the east in the Kingdom of Bara.

The Wild - Goat masked individuals who are mostly thieves, brigands, and those of a chaotic inclination.  They attack everybody equally, without rhyme or reason.  Their kingdom is to the south.  It is now called Wilderkin.

No travelers or news has came from the West for years.  Word is that the kingdom that once called the west home was destroyed by the Knights of the True Tyr.

All the races and classes from D&D are available.  You can be a member of any of the groups or independent.. just remember ONLY human/non casters can be part of the Knights of the true tyr.. and the Knights will kill any non-human they encounter.  Same with anybody discovered to posses magic.

How magic (not blood) works - There is a 33% chance of a spell having a wild surge.. sometimes this can be good (spell becomes more powerful, covers a larger area, etc) or bad.. (trying to cast a fireball and butterflies appear for example) Think a 33% chance to have a wand of wonder effect.  Divine magic works differently .. it is a hit or miss thing .. if it is bad .. it just doesn't work.. but uses up the spell for the day.

It is a high fantasy/low magic setting.  Early characters will start in a town exactly in the middle of the map.  The town is a neutral town, and relatively peaceful.. for now.  Magic, limited as it is, is slowly fading from the world.  Most of the intelligent creatures are magical in nature, and they have also been disappearing.  All the known gods are dead or recovering from the war.  Those who start in the beginning will know each other, but this would be their first adventure.  If they are part of any of the groups, I will HCM them their instructions.  Remember, if they are in a group... they take orders from ... someone.

Those that join later, if anybody does, will be fit in the current timeline somehow.

Now about the starting town.  It was once a small town, but being where it is has caused a lot of people to go there.  To get out from under the various kingdoms.  So it is growing quick.  There is merchants row, where you can get all the standard (ie non magical) goods you could possibly need. At night it can be a bit dangerous however.  There is tavern row, with various inns/taverns and watering holes for just about anybody (from the brawls break out every five minutes to the expensive/fancy type).  Of course there is the residence quarters, and the guild halls (thieves, merchants, etc will have to register at the hall).  Then in the center is the town hall.

Using http://www.hempuli.com/blogblog/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/city.png for a map, with characters starting in the center most point.  I will decide names of towns as needed. Any specific questions??

As for system I use a hybrid 5e, 3.5 system.  Taking what I like from both systems, leaving what I don't

As for rolling up characters... take 4 6 sided dice, reroll any 1's, drop lowest.  Do that 6 times, place where you want in the following stats : Strength, dexterity, constitution, intelligence, wisdom, and charisma.  Everybody starts with 2 feats, a human gets an extra, and a fighter gets an extra.  Use http://www.d20srd.org/indexes/feats.htm for feats.  Once a class is decided upon I will link the class and skill list

We used it in Helnith for a while. Now we use a thread in the OotS forums, which has a built-in dice roller. That has the advantage in that your rolls will persist so you don't have to worry about forgetting them.

So, since you discard the lowest number you roll and reroll any 1s, you left with the sum of 3 D6 for each atribute. Right?

Not really.  If it does get too much I can roll for somebody also.

Also Geny, you don't have to put the dice in any order.  You can place the 6 results anywhere you like.  So the 9 can say go in Charisma.

Ok, I think I'll do it. Should be fun in a twisted sort of way. Even got the basics of the backstory in my head.

As for feats...
I'm considering self-sufficient and spell penetration. But I have also been thinking about dodge and a couple of other magic feats.

Oh, and for school specialty I think I'll go transmutation. That's the one that does buffs and debuffs, right?

Yes, but you must choose a school to never be able to learn spells from if you specialize... can not give up universal either.  Also to be able to cast a spell you have to have a 10 + spell level in intelligence.  The good news is every four levels you get to add +1 to any stat.

Ok for a human fighter you start with four feats.. they start out the most powerful, but high level they will need the extra feats to keep up.

Oh and it is a lot more 3.5 then 5e.. so here is the link to Paladin, Sorcerer, and mage.

You both realize that if you go caster.. you will have to either use blood or risk wild magic effects?  Cantrips are safe (no blood needed, spells have no risk of wild magic.. yet).  For each spell level, however, you need 1hp worth of blood to cast safely.

However, you can also use 5e spells along with 3.5 spells.

How many HP do chickens have? Take the Chicken Infested flaw, and just sacrifice one (or two, or ten) whenever you need to cast a spell.

I was more asking if the rules are easy to get a hang of, because I have little experience with D&D's rule set.
