MMH VII Vs. Trial by Fire

With the steam sale currently going on I am going to buy either the base game or the standalone expansion. My question is, as a solo player, which one would you guys recommend?

Please no "I recommend HoMM 3 from GoG" or "Neither". I AM going to get one. I am fully aware that I might end up regretting it, but I have been waiting since release for a sale to come along, and committed to buying it during the sale long ago.

Well, if you really insist on making the purchase despite.. everything, then why wouldn't you buy Trial by Fire? Doesn't that already include the base game?

Does it? Campaign included (being easily the main reason I am committing this act)? That would certainly answer my question. Cheaper too.

I have no idea if it does or not, I don't own Trial by Fire, it's just my understanding of what standalone expansion means. It might be that it just has the Fortress campaigns without the vanilla ones. Anyway, don't base your purchase on my words, inform yourself better.

Honestly, take a good look at the dwarf line up because that faction + its campaign and scenarios is basically the only difference between the two. Same Skirmish maps to choose from. Same spiders to choose from. If the difference in price is about ten or greater then i'd just pick up the vanilla version.

Lost tales are included I think but I already had the original when I installed the original so not 100% sure.. Afaik only difference between trials and the original are the campaigns.

If you are mostly interested in campaigns I'd say original though be warned that they are very easy and the AI is often set to not attack you or otherwise interfere. Some maps involve a hostile AI but not enough for my liking. And it's easily the worst AI in the whole series unless it received a significant upgrade in the latest patch...

If you are mostly interested in playing maps or hotseat, then trials for the extra faction.

Another word of warning, save often!! There are numerous scripted events and sometimes if one of them does not trigger, you cannot complete the mission. In those cases you start reloading again and again till it works Or you restart the mission and hope it won't happen again.. The stories are decent but stupid crap like that can ruin your experience.
Best of luck.

PS I support your decision to see and try it for yourself.

Original game has 7 campaigns. The addon has 3 (dwarves are technically one campaign, but they are divided into two halves), so if you're that concerned with quantity, the original wins. But I strongly advise against that approach.

I played the campaigns with my friend almost at the same time. We both agreed that vanilla campaigns are mosty boring and unnecesarilly stretched out. In my opinion, only Stronghold and Dungeon campaigns were worth playing. The rest was rubbish. And the water maps in Necro and Sylvan... the horror...

On the other hand, I had lots of fun playing Dwarves' campaign. Maps were well-made, had interesting easter-eggs, dialogues had flair and banter, not to mention amazing voice actors.

Based on campaigns alone, I'd recommend the addon. You also get an additional faction to play with in Skirmish, so that's another plus.

I also liked sylvan and haven campaign but all of them feel unnecessarily stretched at some point. I agree that dwarven campaign was really good though Ivan's second campaign was crappy.

Yeah, you know me too well . Still if everyone had advised that I stick with the base game because it had significantly better campaigns I would have followed their advice. Thank you everyone, my choice is made.

I say go for the Complete Edition, which is on sale now for 25 EUR. You practically get everything that was released for the game so far for only a few additional bucks. This is the one I bought immediately after Trial of Fire was released and it was a solid choice. I liked most Campaigns and Scenario maps so far, both from the base game and the expansion.

Aside this hilarious topic thread, here's another one that could give you, all cramps

Did you know that the original patched to version 2.2.1 can not be fully downloaded via the internet's game client of Uplay?

Because, it is well over 14 GigaBytes in size and, most Quad core machines that are sold over the counter in most of the most popular technology stores(Giants type of Chains of stores), have the maximum of 12 Gigabytes to start with.

Even my Quad core one of in the basement level of my parents' house has only 8 gigs in RAM(HP cheap one from Best-Buy: Ottawa, Canada).

And, to make matters worse, If I decide to format my HDD and re-install everything, my 16 GB of RAM might not be enough to download the latest version of Heroes VII:2.2.1.

So, it might be wise to choose the smallest one to download, after all. I do strongly think that the Stand-Alone Expansion of Trial By Fire, might, very well, become my next choice for strategy, Medieval Age type gaming. Might even play and process way faster than that of the original one, alone.

Until I get to rebuild myself a proper gaming's rig: 8 cores, 32 gigs of RAM, 2 gigs of a fully compatible DX-12 graphics card(2 GPU type), 2 terabyte of HDD + a minimum of a 650 watts PSU with a Mid-Tower case that can house such a top configuration of a PC. Plus, to think that I do not even think about the DDR4 type of chip-sets yet is, totally mind blowing.

That's nonsense. The amount of RAM you have is not a limit of the file size you can download. If you are having trouble downloading the patch, there is a different reason.
