It's not quite as much a forest as it used to be because some dickweed bought property behind the creek and above the cliff and built a house there.

You would be even more confused trying to understand India or China, since there are many nations contained within those two states.

But China is openly totalitarian just like India has a very strict and traditional gap between its social castes, they are what they are. What puzzles me about America are the contrasts between the very progressive and the very primitive and them being so much tangled up in each other like an interweb. Hope my last phrase made sense in English.

The US is a democracy so of course the two are going to have to deal with each other.

It' not about being a democracy, so are European countries or Japan or Canada. I'm talking about a social structure that can produce both great creativity and blatant bigotry, enormous scientific research and almost medieval level superstition, all spread out beyond marginal factors.

I think it simply comes down the "Melting Pot" is only warm now (if that) and all the many ingredients that are now tossed in with reckless abandon...stay separated - the Internet is a perfect "enforcer" for that result. Toss in...Money is what everyone is after and we have none...even for ourselves. Modest prosperity is probably the single largest problem facing the world now.

From my perspective, people are now more angry (sometimes rightfully so) and unreasonable (always wrongfully so) by far, than I have ever seen this nation in my life. Add to this, the fact that America still boasts a statue of Liberty boasting a wonderful statement that was proved-true for well over a century, that cannot be fulfilled now for several reasons and yet this corrupt Government continues on as if adding more global problems to the pot o' problems is somehow going to become a Utopian soup.

Division is marketed & sold behind an ideology that rants Unity but the first words out of their mouth are Attack & Division.

So, Artu <imo> what you are seeing now in America is a horribly fragmented society full of all the good and bad naturally embedded in humanity around the globe but here all in the same pot. And we get to see and read it 365/24/7.

It isn't that hard to figure out though. The majority of the superstitious and bigoted comments come from fundamentalist christians whose archaic beliefs should be all too familiar to someone from Turkey. You also have to remember that many people still cling to the old ideas of intellectualism and authority=European elitism.

Yes, but in case of Turkey, it is a young Republic and although not exactly a devoloping country, it's not a first world country either. It's glory is in its imperial past, not any recent global pioneering, so it's natural a lot of people turn conservative like that, it's like an Italian missing the greatness of Rome. And in rural areas we still have traditional villagers which are not exactly comparable to your hillbillies who are urbanized farmers to an extent, despite everything. I mean, there are fundamentalists everywhere, yes, but a country who's sending satellites to Jupiter and which has senators or even vice president candidates like Sarah Palin is grotesquely unique.

There is more variation in "hillbilly" than just farmers, but either way I think that them and traditional Turkish villagers would get along just fine as they share basic archaic Abrahamic values.

I don't know much about palin or any of other Washington oldies or wannebes anymore but I do know (I think) she actually came to power because of the graft Gov/Corp BS that was going on in her state. And the thing is the majority of the people in that state were behind her. When no man will stand up against tyranny...women must and anymore I don't really care what they believe as long as they keep it close to their own heart and practice the fundamentals of this Nation's Constitution...though that is not "fun" nor "da-mental" but is an old system that worked well for much of our history.

Believe this or not Artu, our Constitution has been point-blank targeted for destruction behind the new Mythos. Along with this most important Government, so has Christianity been subverted. Anything can be made a Political tool.

Hitler hammered Christianity as he wanted it by ignoring Christ completely but still held the Roman ritual splendor and took "Spectacle" to a new level and then added in large dashes of Darwin and Nicheansuperman and we got the 3rd Reich.

What really gripes me (as a complete outsider); here she IS a Woman but because she doesn't have the "correct roar" she is fair game to our sold-out media. And bluntly I would NOT trust any damn thing I read from this Media i.e. About you Artu. Because when they print something they damn well want to destroy unless it is about "one of their chosen ones".

Just as bad to me; On the other hand I am disgusted that Christian is still being bandied about in this nation as if these charm-pedlars "name-it-claim-it" are nothing more than snake-oil merchants. To see Trump has taken a group of <gag> spiritual advisors and a couple are in that clan?...is disgusting to me and shows me something about him I damn well did not want to see in anyone. However, it kind of makes sense...since rich people always...name & claim. The unholy marriage serving Mammon and pretending it is "God". Which of course just happens to be the very thing Christ told us we cannot do!

Since nearly this whole thread is off topic I may as well add something else. I think Islam has been high-jacked compared to what "it became". Islam was a religion of political-conquest there is no doubt that but for some centuries it had became peaceful for the most part. Why the rise of militant-extremists now? Jihad-rhetoric makes a perfect backdrop for war, when combating unjust-war, just like onward Christian soldiers did once upon a misguided time.

Everything I have mentioned is indeed linked...in the grand scheme of politics today. And that crap is almost everywhere, not just here in the states.

Look at Libya. A prime example of what WAR did to that nation. Not religion but WAR. Extremism abounds after the dictator's fall and the internal government was destroyed. As always, in the end, it is about POWER & CONTROL...over people, money & resources...MAMMON.

It's not about being a Christian, Markkur. But in case of Palin for example, if somebody is the mayor of Alaska and believes that the United Kingdom is "de facto" ruled by the Queen, something is very off key. I wouldn't want to sound elitist (although, I support a type of elitism when it comes to things like who will be responsible for education, foreign policy etc) but in a country where there is enough money to examine Jupiter, there should also be enough money to make sure, somebody who governs a city is educated enough to know that the Brits have a prime minister.

I'm not sure it should. Sarah Palin is an ignorant woman but what do you want to do about it? If she takes a test of random factoids and answers incorrectly if a foreign power has a prime minister, does that mean it's forbidden for her to run for a public office? I see this being problematic.

I'm not talking about "forbidding" anything. But why are there not so many blatantly ignorant public figures in many first world countries when compared to U.S. This is about understanding an anti-intellectualism in the U.S. which is a social phenomenon. (And a contrast to the intellectual production, the country is also obviously capable of.) It's not that she shouldn't be allowed but in many countries, she wouldn't be taken seriously spontaneously.

The mayor of Tokyo celebrated the Japanese invasion of Peking a couple of years back, and that office is far more high profile than governor of Alaska.

I believe you are being prejudice in your views. A wide variance of quality is normal. If there are tiny countries in Europe where this is not as true, then they are statistical outliers. Some of these countries have less people than a single large city. The situation pan-America is the norm. You need to read more international news.

Well, your example is about ideology rather than ignorance but the  U.S. being more on the spot may be affecting my observations, I won't object to that.

What exactly do you mean by this?

Btw, the U.S. being more anti-intellectual compared to other developed countries is not only my personal observation, there is a great deal of think-tanking about this.

Sunk in liberal democracy, economically better life standards, (relatively) proper education for the masses, social mobility and opportunities, constitutional rights...

I mean, should I really spell out the difference between Kenya and Denmark?
